Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 5th century CE. A large round mortaria, made of a smooth greyware, with a wide, flanged rim and distinct flat foot. Mortaria were bowls with coarse sand or grit embedded in the internal surface (which you can feel when you run your hand over this); they were made for pounding or mixing foods. They greyware fabric here may be indicative of an eastern British manufacture, like from the Cambridge area. Size: 12.3" W x 4.4" H (31.2 cm x 11.2 cm)Mortaria are frequently found in the furthest outposts of the Roman Empire, a sign of the standardized spread of Roman cooking methods. Mortaria were hugely important at forts and their remains are often found in great quantities there - both imported and produced in local marketplaces. Through its many editions and translations it has remained continuously in print, and is estimated to have sold more copies worldwide than almost any other text, excluding the Bible. At first Baden-Powell seems to have anticipated a co-educational movement, but agreed to produce a separate training manual for girls, in association with his sister Agnes.
