Townshend (Miss Barbara Anne). Introduction to the Art of Cutting Groups of Figures, Flowers, Birds, &c. In Black Paper, printed for Edward Orme, [1815], titlepage (with contemporary manuscript note below imprint 'No.1 - 7/6'), leaf of introduction, and four engravings of silhouettes by M. Dubourg after Townshend (dated 1815), some faint creasing, title-page dusty, stitched as issued, leaf size 34.5 x 49cm (13.5 x 19.25ins) old plain paper protective upper wrapper only (some marks and soiling) Rare. Apparently the first part, containing four engravings, from a complete series of twenty plates issued between 1815 and 1816. They depict: ladies in a garden with children at play; villagers at a festival; passion flower and moths; and six bewigged chefs cooking frogs and spring onions. (1)

Tribal/Ethnographica/Oceanic interest: A rare collection of early 20th-century photographs depicting Maori villages, 'food stores', 'cooking pools', groups of natives, carved fortifications and 'look-out towers'. The photographs feature contemporary inscriptions to the verso, with one example discussing a traditional village and its vulnerable status: 'English homes have of late years been replacing these picturesque places of abode.'Condition Report: Good, striking images that have survived well.
