Lot 1734

15th century A.D. and later. Including various vessel elements such as lids, feet and bodies, some with decorative motifs; together with fragmentary glass vessels. Cf. for similar examples of two-handled cooking pots from Low Countries Brown, D., H., Pottery in Medieval Southampton, c.1066-1510, Southampton, 2002, fig.268. 19.2 kg total including box, 69.5 x 30.5 cm (27 1/3 x 12 in.). Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private collection. Among the interesting objects of this hoard there is a two-handled cooking pot with partial internal and external clear glaze. These late medieval potteries (circa 1490-1510) were often imported to England from the Low Countries. If in the high medieval period French potteries remained the most common Continental import, in the late Medieval Age the products of France, the Low Countries, the Rhineland and the Iberian Peninsula occurred in roughly equal proportions. [No Reserve]

Lot 1743

15th century A.D. and later. Including glazed vessels of various types: tripod pots, dishes, platters, together with a decorated fragment; chipped and cracked. Cf. for similar examples of redware tripods from Low Countries Brown, D., H., Pottery in Medieval Southampton, c.1066-1510, Southampton, 2002, fig.28. 4.15 kg total, 14.5-33.5 cm (5 3/4 - 13 1/4 in.). Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private collection. The majority of ceramics here presented are kitchen wares. Usually cooking pots are the most numerous forms in the majority of medieval contexts. They are mostly related to domestic functions, cooking pots being used to boil food or fry it. They come in different sizes and have globular bodies, everted rims and one or two handles. Ceramics from Dundee, Scotland, and Southampton, confirm that one of the most common vessel types employed among 1490-1510 A.D. was the tripod pipkin, with globular body, rounded base, three legs and a single or double handle, like the specimen here visible. These specimens were very often redware pottery imported from the Low Countries. [5, No Reserve]

Lot 1866

Circa 16th century A.D. and later. Comprising glazed and unglazed vessels, figures and tiles, including examples decorated with figural, geometric, floral and heraldic designs (Beauvais Sgraffito), together with a fire brick displaying a Pelican in Her Piety design. Cf. for similar examples Brown, D.H., Pottery in Medieval Southampton, c.1066-1510, Southampton, 2002, fig.52 (cooking pot), fig.246 (Beauvais Sgraffito). 7.7 kg total, 3.8-43 cm (1 1/2 - 17 in.). Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private collection. In medieval Southampton the various forms of pottery included cooking pots with the beaded rim and opposing pair of handles, as it was probably also the specimen presented in this ensemble. Beauvais earthenware is a smooth, fine white fabric with some fine quartz grains. Vessels have a rich lustrous lead glaze and floral designs. [12, No Reserve]

4th-5th century A.D. With wide flat bottom decorated inside with incised concentric circles, the internal concave surface retaining some of the silver coating; the central umbilicus still visible. Cf. Tassinari, S., La Vaisselle de Bronze, Romaine et Provinciale, au Musée des Antiquités Nationales, XXIXe supplément de Gallia, Paris, 1975, item 88, for a type with same dimensions (22cm diameter). 860 grams, 22.8 cm wide (9 in.). From the family collection of a Surrey gentleman since before 1960. This vessel (lanx) was part of Roman and provincial bronze instrumentum domesticum, i.e. culinary or domestic utility ware. Such cooking vessels are rare in such condition: some are found in central and northern Gaul, Italy, in Pannonia, Germany and in Britain. Specimens of precious metal, richly decorated and chiselled, sometimes adorned with reliefs, are mentioned by ancient authors such as Cicero (Ad Att., VI,1,13) and Ovid (Pont.III,5,20). [No Reserve]
