[Vaughan, Thomas]. A Hermeticall Banquet, Drest by a Spagiricall Cook: for the better Preservation of the Microcosme, printed for Andrew Crooke, 1652 [i.e. 1651], half-title discarded, lacking F4-F6 (pp.49-54), with preceding catchword torn away (and sl. loss of text), some staining, mainly to margins, corners curled and those to title-page frayed, modern half morocco gilt, sl. rubbed, sm. 8vo. Wing V149. Sold with all faults, not subject to return. A rare work by alchemist and poet Thomas Vaughan (1621-1666) who published various treatises on alchemy, magic and mysticism, usually writing under the pseudonym of Eugenius Philalethes. Vaughan quarelled ferociously with Henry More, which led to a pamphlet war between the two men. He was satirized by Samuel Butler in his ‘Character of a Hermetic Philosopher’, and is said to have suggested some aspects of Ralpho in ‘Hudibras’. Swift, in ‘A Tale of a Tub’, described Vaughan as a writer of the greatest gibberish “ever published in any language”. ‘A Hermeticall Banquet’, first published in 1650, is a curious mixture of alchemy, nutrition and cooking with some of Vaughan’s verse interspersed for good measure.
