Their costumes... is a high crowned felt hat, in shape like a flower pot, and a coarse kind of woollen cloak of a dark brown, or green hue. Suddenly they each throw off their cloaks... they commence twisting round, and round the room in a kind of waltz". [Slavery]. "On our way home, we passed thro' the Slave Market, where the traffic in the sale of human blood is held every morning... . It is a large quadrangular court, with railed platforms ranged round the sides - These were elevated about six, or eight feet from the ground; and parties of slaves are placed in them, previously to being sold, like flocks of sheep - Slavery in the East is not, however, to be regarded in the same light, as elsewhere - Here the slaves are invariably treated most kindly by their masters... ".
East Asia, Japan, Middle Jomon period, ca. 2000 to 1000 BCE. A large, deep, conical urn made using the coil method, the clay mixed by the woman who made it (women produced all ceramics in this culture) with adhesive materials like mica, lead, fibers, and crushed shells. She would then smooth the interior and exterior and create cord-like motifs around the exterior, many of which can still be seen here, and for which this enigmatic culture is named - "Jomon" means "cord pattern" in Japanese. An applied, rope-like strip of clay is just under the slightly rolled out rim. Jomon pottery is some of the oldest ever made, and much of it has a similar form as this example: "fukabachi," deep bowls or jars. The flattened base indicates that it is probably from the early Middle Jomon period. Size: 10.8" W x 19.55" H (27.4 cm x 49.7 cm).The fukabachi style emerged at the beginning of the Jomon period and persisted for centuries. These were used for cooking and storage; the cultivation of rice, which began around this time, created demand for ceramic domestic vessels. People lived in small communities, in square-shaped pithouses and had regular trade with the Korean peninsula and with each other, creating a fairly uniform ceramic tradition across a wide geographic area. This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase. Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Chicago, Illinois, USA collection Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces, with some areas of restoration. Overpainting along some of the repair lines. Repairs are generally unobtrusive. Two drill holes from TL testing: outside the rim, and along the exterior lower body. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #146140

[ Montefiore (Judith, Lady )]. The Jewish Manual; or Practical Information in Jewish and Modern Cookery, with a Collection of Valuable Recipes & Hints relating to the Toilette, Edited by a Lady, 1st edition, T. & W. Boone, 1846, scattered light finger-soiling, original blind-stamped green cloth, slightly rubbed and a few minor marks, spine darkened, 8vo (Qty: 1)Bitting p. 568. The first Kosher cook-book in the English language. The anonymous author is believed to be Lady Judith Montefiore, wife of the celebrated Sir Moses Montefiore of Ramsgate. This “First Lady of Anglo Jewry” is of significance both to Anglo-Jewish history and to the history of Jewish women. While embodying all the Victorian virtues of high moral purpose, sense of duty, charity and public–mindedness, she was a fierce loyalist to her faith and her people, devoted to Jewish causes and the welfare of Jews the world over. The cookbook reflects her social position and is clearly directed at ladies who maintain households with servants. She adapts recipes to conform to Jewish dietary laws, replacing ingredients such as lard, so much used in English kitchens, and eliminating shellfish and forbidden meats. Her section on the toilette is “Victorian” in tone. She recommends simplicity in dress, considers delicate hands a mark of elegance and refinement, and carefully assesses the effect of diet on the complexion. Lady Judith sought to elevate home cooking with social polish while remaining true to the tenets of Jewish practice. Additionally she intended that her cook-book would attract the attention of “those ladies not of the Hebrew persuasion” by providing them with recipes for sophisticated fare that was only incidentally Kosher. This is a rare nineteenth century work containing over 200 recipes, in addition to a glossary of French terms and the section on beauty. However, perhaps of more importance than the recipes themselves is the book's message that one can be “genteel without being Gentile”. NB: The estimate has been revised to £3000-4000
