A fine 19th century Cantonese export ivory chess set in the Burmese pattern, natural and stained red, the white rook with Union flag (one white rook is missing, and one white pawn), maximum height 10.8cm, the set is housed in a Chinese lacquer games box with fitted trays, the removable lid is lacquered for backgammon and chess, the box also contains six further compartments, these contain a set of Cantonese carved ivory counters, 16 red and 13 white.
