An early 19th Century Indian-Export ivory and horn chess set, Vizagapatnam, contained within an ivory and sandalwood-lined folding games box of book form, the interior fitted with three further rectangular boxes, all with engraved penwork borders of scrolling foliage, the exterior of the games box inlaid with a horn and ivory chequer board, the interior with a backgammon board, the three further boxes containing the chess set, sixteen white game counters, fifteen black game counters and a pair of dice shakers, height of king approx 13.5cm, length of games box approx 47cm, length of smaller boxes approx 21cm (faults).
A rare early 19th Century East India (John) Company ivory part chess set, probably Berhampore, one side representing the East Indian Company with dark brown stained bases, comprising a pair of figures on horseback, height approx 6.9cm, a pair of oxen, a pair of castellated turrets with cannon and eight soldier pawns, the other side representing Indian troops with green stained bases, comprising a pair of figures on camels, a pair of castellated turrets and eight soldier pawns (one pawn with un-stained base, faults).
