Victorian mahogany circular occasional table with chess board inlaid top, barley twist support and tri-pod base, measuring approximately 72cm high by 49cm diameterCondition ReportOne of the feet appears to have been repaired, there are a few cracks to the twist and too the underside. There is some wear to the top and the side. Pleasse see attached images.
Howlin' Wolf / Chester Burnett / Signature, a signature of Chester Burnett (Howlin Wolf's real name) - This was obtained by the late Ron Skinner, Bass player with The Nighthawks who accompanied / backed many Blues artists when they came to play in the UK - Obtained at the 100 Club where The Nighthawks accompanied Howlin Wolf - The signature on card has been attached to the front sleeve of Howlin Wolf LP (Chess LP 1469) - All in Excellent condition - details of provenance have been provided by Mel Wright (Drummer in The NIghthawks) and a copy is included in the lot - As per our Terms and Conditions and with particular reference to autograph material or works, it is imperative that potential buyers or their agents have inspected pieces that interest them to ensure satisfaction with the lot prior to auction; the purchase will be made at their own risk. A walnut inlaid box containing turned wooden chess pieces (thirty-two pieces) CONDITION REPORT: King: 10.3cm high, 32 Pieces in totalBlack Queen with small loss as pictured, two black pawns with small dents. One white pawn with 2-3mm holes drilled to the underside, another white pawn with small abrasion to base. The box is not original to the set, the box has decoupage postcards to the interior of the lid and box. Veneer movement and cracks to box as well as several ships and small losses.

There is some ebony corner moulding lacking to the right corner at the front, small old repair to corner of the lid. Key present. Black King, queen, bishop and white bishop missing finials. There is an associated black knight which is 4.5cm high, the original is 3.5cm. There is a chip to the base of the original. There is a chip to the collar of one white pawn. Otherwise good condition. Guide distressed and with spotting tears and chips. Hinges of board becoming tired and cracking. IMPORTANT NOTICE: This item will be registered from the UK Ivory Act 2018. A late Victorian 19th century paper bound wooden chess set in the shape of two historical volumes books. The chess board made of two hinged sides in the form of Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 of the History of Scotland encyclopaedia. The hand carved chess & draughts pieces with lead weighted bases. To also include two dice tumblers. Box measuring approx. 9 x 25 x 45cm.

Early 14th century, bronze seal matrix, chess type, 19mm diameter, 22mm tall, circular face with design of a hare riding on the back of a lion, reads s’ roberti de hoo. About very fine with a green patina £160-£200 --- Provenance: found in Hampshire The Hoo family are first recorded on the Southeast coast of Britain in the 8th century. Robert Hoo is recorded in the 1290s as the owner of the manor of Knebworth in Hertfordshire.
13th century, bronze seal matrices (2), circular with loop offset behind, 23mm diameter, reads s’eris will de broom, facing monk’s head in a cinquefoil; Chess type with circular face, 19mm diameter, reads lvna nalvl, bird standing with wing outstretched [2]. First fine with porous green patina, second about fine £60-£80 --- Provenance: both found in Hampshire The surname Broom came to England following the Norman conquest and is derived from the broom plant. A William Broom is recorded in 1273 in Norfolk. Luna Nalvi translates as ‘the moon is gone’.
13-14th century, bronze seal matrices (3), pointed oval (2), first with clasped hands, legend reads iesv teccam vrlec (I cried out to Jesus); second with bird standing with wings raised, sigilvm salvtis (seal of salvation); circular chess type with hare, legend reads prive sv (private) [3]. Fine or better £120-£150 --- Provenance: all found at Royston, Hertfordshire
18th century, brass seals (2), chess type, 33mm x 16mm diameter, with circular face of two crossed keys with the letters g h c m spaced around; fob seal, c. 1780-1800, with openwork handle and a moulded clear glass seal with a fox running [2]. Both fine £40-£60 --- Provenance: both found in Hampshire, the second in Hursley
15th century, a bronze chess type circular seal matrix, 22mm diameter by 24mm deep; central design of a shield containing the letters ex ex ex around a wheel; the shield is surmounted by a flying bird with wings upright; legend reads ghent hrevf dalt (Ghent rules?).
