GODFREY LEONARD: (1920-2011) American Airforce Navigator on the 'Great Artiste' during atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A.L.S., Len Godfrey, two pages, 4to, n.p., n.d. [1997], to Ran. An informative letter detailing the bombing mission on Nagasaki. Godfrey somberly informs his correspondent 'Whatever I write certainly will not convey to you or others how I felt on the aftermath of Aug 9th 1945. The world and our country have changed so much in fifty-two years that many of us who were actively involved in WWII find it difficult to communicate meaningfully with the "boomers", generation X etc. Yes "the times they are a changing", and with them so are our sensitivities, feelings and emotions.' Godfrey continues to describe his experiences with Fred Bocks crew (C-13) during the bombing of Nagasaki, 'We carried the instrument package which was dropped simultaneously with the bomb.' Continuing 'The weather conditions en route prevented us using Iwo as a check point. It became a case of celestial navigation all the way and total radio silence'. Upon reaching the target Godfrey explains 'There was broken cloud cover there but Captain Beahan the bombardier was able at the last minute to make the release and the bomb fell away… My thoughts following the bomb run were WOW!! The war will certainly end now.' Concluding 'Thank goodness this effective and terrible weapon had been developed by the U.S. and not our adversaries nor the then U.S.S.R… I'm proud to have been a member of the 509th Composite Group, a member of Crew C-13 and to have played a part in that bit of history.' VGThe Great Artiste, U.S. Army Air Forces Silverplate B-29 bomber, 509th Composite Group. The United States, with the consent of the United Kingdom as laid down in the Quebec Agreement, dropped nuclear weapons on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively, during the final stage of World War II.

A carved oak ecclesiastical Ceiling Boss, from Church of St Mary the Virgin, St. Marychurch, Torquay, in the form of a dome carved with grapes and vine leaves, decorated with red, white and gold paints, some damage to ends of leaves and large split on the underside, approx. diameter 14in (35.6cm) Provenance: the vendor was Treasurer to the Church of St. Mary the Virgin PCC, he was given this by Reverend Vokes-Dudgeon, while he served as vicar of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin between early 1950s and the 1970s; the boss had been previously recovered from the debris of the Church after it had been hit by a bomb on May 30, 1943 with a tragic loss of life. It is believed that the Luftwaffe had carried out a raid after learning of the existence of an RAF Training Wing on Torquay Sea Front. There are various stories about the tragedy; one suggests that during the raid, an enemy plane was struck by anti-aircraft fire, clipped the church spire and its bombs hit the church, another that the church was simply hit as bombs rained down on the area. Whatever the truth, sadly the church was full of children attending Sunday School when the bombs hit. As many as 26 children and teachers were killed and the church was destroyed by fire; casualties might have been even worse, but some children had gone to the beach because it was a sunny day. Numbers of fatalities have never been confirmed, because while some children were from local families, others were orphans who came from a nearby children's home. In all, over 50 people were killed that day in Torquay.

*A Rare Silver Cross of Rhodesia Pair awarded to Captain Martin Pearse, S.C.R., M.F.C., of 1 (Rhodesian) Special Air Service Regiment, who was awarded the Silver Cross of Rhodesia for leading a successful bush raid in which he himself accounted for 13 kills. He was later killed in action during Operation Carpet - the raid on Joshua Nkomo’s Intelligence Headquarters in Lusaka, Zambia, on the night of 12-13 April, 1979, comprising: Silver Cross of Rhodesia, the reverse officially named (Capt M.F. Pearce M.F.C. (Operational)); Rhodesian General Service Medal, with operational military forces commendation silver pick emblem upon ribbon (Capt M.F. Pearse); note variation in spelling of surname, group mounted on card for display with S.A.S. cloth insignia, nearly extremely fine (2). Silver Cross of Rhodesia: Government Gazette: 1 June 1979 - awarded for the earlier raid on Nkomo’s home in Lusaka on 12-13 April 1979. Military Forces Commendation (Operational) Government Gazette 26 September 1975 - ‘Lieutenant M. F. Pearse, C Squadron, Rhodesian Special Air Service Regiment. Whilst employed on operations Lieutenant Pearse was in command of a twelve-man patrol carrying out the task of a long term ambush. The bush was extremely thick and finding a suitable position proved a difficult task. After lying in ambush for five days, twenty-four terrorists walked into the position. Lieutenant Martin Frank Pearse sprang the ambush which resulted in thirteen immediate kills. Further intelligence gained indicated that fifteen terrorists had been killed in this ambush and also a number had been wounded. Lieutenant Pearse’s skill in the siting of the ambush and his determination to wait and kill, resulted in a highly successful contact.’ Martin Pearse was born on 12 March 1949 at Johannesburg, South Africa, and was educated at The Ridge School, and then at St Andrews College in Grahamstown, where he was a keen sportsman. After his national service as a gunnery rating in S.A.S (South African Ship) President Steyn, he spent two years as an accountant in Johannesburg before applying to join the officer training course for entry into the Rhodesian Army in early 1971, joining some 30 others. Of these, 8 were commissioned on 18 February 1972, with Martin Pearse being awarded the Sword of Honour. He initially served in the R.L.I. as a Troop Commander in 2 Commando, before his later selection as a Lieutenant in “C” Squadron, (Rhodesian) Special Air Service Regiment. In c.1978 he left the S.A.S. to serve as a Military Intelligence Officer with 1 Brigade for approximately one year, before rejoining the S.A.S. in early 1979. Meticulous in nature, a contemporary wrote of him: ‘his insistence on accuracy, neatness and detail…was well known’, and was no doubt absolutely necessary during special operations. On the night of 12-13 April 1979, Captain Martin Pearse led the S.A.S. raid on the house and command centre of Joshua Nkomo – leader of Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (Z.I.P.R.A.) forces in Lusaka. This operation was codenamed ‘Bastille’, and involved a clandestine raid across the border into Zambia. The Rhodesian S.A.S. took the bold decision to paint their Sabre Land Rovers to closely resemble the colours of the Zambian security force vehicles, and having taken a ferry across Lake Kariba, they then held their nerve as they drove their painted Land Rovers right into the centre of Lusaka. The plan was set for Pearse to begin by breaching the outer security wall, and then lead his team into the house to assassinate Nkomo – their target. The raid started well, and having breached the wall several insurgent guards were killed surrounding the perimeter of the house, but inside the house Nkomo was nowhere to be found. Inevitable reports of tip-offs and intelligence moles between Rhodesia’s COMOPS and MI6 (who apparently wanted a peaceful solution to the conflict involving both sides) were soon to follow. Despite this, another S.A.S. team made a simultaneous and successful attack on the Liberation Centre elsewhere in Lusaka. In another attempt two months later on 26 June they launched Operation Carpet, a combined helicopter and jet air attack on the Z.I.P.R.A. camp at Chikumbi (north of Lusaka) and a ground attack on the headquarters of the Z.A.P.U. department of National Security and Order at Roma in Lusaka. A group of five helicopters were deployed to drop the S.A.S. assault troops, including Martin Pearse, around the headquarters and opened fire with small arms and rockets, whilst Hawker Hunter aircraft pounded the guerrilla camp at Chikumbi some eight miles north of Lusaka. In the short, 30- minute action roughly 20 to 50 enemy troops were killed, but sadly Captain Martin Pearse was also killed, reputedly when a bunker bomb exploded close to his position, causing a section of wall to collapse upon him. Pearse had been due to receive the Silver Cross of Rhodesia which had been gazetted to him at the beginning of that month, however he was killed just three days before the date of the bestowal. WW2 Royal Air Force Immediate Distinguished Flying Cross & Log Books of Flight Lieutenant Stanley A Windmill 158 Squadron RAFVR, Decorated for Gallantry on Operation over Trappes when he skilfully evaded an attack by German night fighter, allowing his air gunners to shoot the aircraft down, also took part in the disastrous raid on Nuremburg in March 1944, single George VI Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C) on original ribbon professionally framed along with his original named Buckingham Palace forwarding slip. Accompanied by three of his original Pilots Flying Log books covering his period of service from January 1942 to June 1945. The logs cover his initial training in the UK, USA and then his operational tours with 158 Squadron detailing many missions over occupied Europe and Germany. Also two original photographs of Windmill and his crew, these are in poor condition but two copies have been made and framed, the book “The Bombing of Nuremberg” by James Campbell, pair of US Airforce pilots wings and a RAF gilt and enamel sweetheart brooch in the form of a pair of pilots wings. **Accompanying the group is a print out from a magazine which had an article written by Flight Lieutenant Windmill’s son which gives details of his fathers career, “Stan Windmill, my father joined the London Metropolitan Police in 1937 at the age of 20, and met my mother while on point duty at the London Docks where she worked as a clerk. On the outbreak of war, despite being in a reserved occupation, he made a number of requests to be allowed to do his bit in the war effort. After several attempts he was able to join the Royal Air Force as a reservist”. He goes on to describe his training in England and then in the USA at various airfields. He then goes on to describe his father’s operational career with 158 Squadron, “During his operational career, he flew two tours of duty, completing in excess of 40 raids on major targets throughout Germany, including Aachen, Dusseldorf and Manheim. He also took part in the notorious 1000 bomber raid on Nuremburg in March 1944. In fact only some 796 aircraft took part in this raid which proved to be a disaster. This was mainly due to the fact that the weather forecast was completely wrong, with clear moonlit skies instead on the predicted heavy cloud. This allowed the German night fighters to have a field day, shooting down 95 of the allied bombers. The toll in destroyed aircraft equated to an 11% loss, one of the worst percentages of the war. The raid was also branded a failure because many of the crews did not reach the target area, and released their bomb loads onto non-targets. Photo reconnaissance of the intended targets showed little to no damage”. ** He goes onto state that the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross was for this raid, however the award appeared in the London Gazette on 19th September 1944 and the citation is as follows, “One night in June 1944, this officer piloted an aircraft detailed to attack Trappes. During the operation the aircraft was attacked by a fighter at close range. By a clever manoeuver, Flight Lieutenant Windmill evaded the attacker but a short time afterwards the enemy aircraft again came in. Once again Flight Lieutenant Windmill responded well to the directions of his gunners and obtained a position from which they delivered effective fire and shot the enemy aircraft down. In this spirited action, Flight Lieutenant Windmill displayed great skill, coolness and co-operation. He has participated in a large number of sorties during which he has attacked a wide range of targets.” ** This lot is being sold on behalf of the International Bomber Command Centre and was donated by the family of Flight Lieutenant Windmill. Please note we have not removed the Distinguished Flying Cross from the frame so is being sold as viewed.
