Lot 1004

Mid-20th century AD. A pair of engine valves recovered from the wreck of the B17F Flying Fortress 42-29540, mounted in a wooden base with brass plaque 'Flying Fortress / Winchelsea'. 1.6 kg, 17cm including stand (6 3/4"). Recovered by the vendor from the undersea crash site, off Winchelsea, East Sussex, UK, 1980s; with a copy letter from a surviving crew member and an information sheet. The valves were recovered from the crash wreckage of the B17F which ditched in the Channel off Winchelsea, Sussex, on 6th September 1942. The aircraft was part of 91st Bomb Group, 323rd Squadron, and left Bassingbourne airfield on a mission to bomb Stuttgart, Germany. Cloud cover caused the formation to break up; some aircraft ran out of fuel on the return or crash landed. Aircraft 42-29540 encountered flak and sustained damage from fighter (FW190) attack, losing two engines and shedding fuel. The aircraft ditched in the Channel and some crew members were picked up by a British minesweeper. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

Rare and important D.F.C. Gallantry group, comprising Distinguished Flying Cross, 1914 - 1915 Star, named to 2. Lieut. A. P. Maurice A.S.C., together with War and Victory medals, named to Capt. A. P. Maurice. R.A.F. and miniature medal group (both mounted on bars). Alongside the medals is a copy of his commission at the rank of Flight Lieutenant, dated 10th August 1919, his Distinguished Flying Cross Citation, hand-signed by Major General Ironside, photographs of him and his planes and newspaper cuttings following his death. Alfred Price Maurice began his military career serving at the rank of Captain in the Army Service Corps (A.S.C.). In 1916, he transferred into the recently formed Royal Flying Corps (R.F.C.), serving throughout the rest of the First World War. Later in 1919, he served with the Allied Forces at Archangel, deep in Northern Russia, commanding an R.A.F. unit based at Obozerskaya from May 5th 1919 in a fight against Bolshevik Forces and it was whilst serving here that Captain Maurice was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C.) in recognition of his 'Gallant Conduct in the Field', stating that in commanding his unit he has shown 'Initiative and Readiness' to adapt himself to the unusual and often unfavourable conditions, constantly carrying reconnaissance over enemy lines under dangerous and arduous conditions and conducted bomb raids from low level in spite of strong opposition by enemy anti-aircraft guns and machine guns. By his fine example, he has kept up a very high standard of morale in his command. After his successes in Russia, he was granted permanent commission in August 1919 at the rank of Flight Lieutenant and on 1st January 1925, he was promoted to the rank Squadron Leader, serving until his retirement in April 1937. Shortly afterwards in May 1939 he was awarded the honorary rank of Wing Commander and a few months later after the outbreak of the Second World War, he came out of retirement, commanding the 27 Air School in Bloemfontein, South Africa throughout the War, until he was demobbed in early 1946. After the Second World War, the then Group Captain Maurice saw out his retirement in Colchester, Essex, spending his spare time sailing, being both a member of the Royal Harwich and West Mersea Yacht Clubs, until he died suddenly in 1960. An important and historically interesting medal group

VF. See inside front cover Note: “Lifeboat Gallantry” edited by Barry Cox refers: “1st December 1828: A little before daybreak, two miles north of Newton-by-the-Sea, Northumberland, during a severe easterly gale, the Arbroath schooner Triton, on passage from Libau, Russia, to Newcastle, with a cargo of rye, ran ashore. All attempts to get a rocket line aboard failed due to the distance involved. Lieutenant Brunton volunteered to make another attempt using a local coble. With four fishermen, he succeeded in launching it at the third attempt through violent surf. Alongside the wreck the sea was so turbulent that all, together with a survivor who had dropped into the boat, were thrown out but they managed to regain hold on her. Using the rope that had been attached to it, the coble was pulled ashore with the rescuers and rescued. By this time the schooner had broken up and the remainder of her crew perished”. O’Byrne’s “Naval Biographical Dictionary” notes John Brunton was born 1st Sept 1794. Entered the Navy 25th March 1808, and until 1813, served, successively, in the Barfleur, Thunderer and Banterer. B33c Signed Lt General Ira Eaker , Lt Col R Johnson USA Pilot WW11 Ace 27 B24 Cover Signed Lt General Ira Eaker , Lt Col R Johnson USA Pilot WW11 Ace 27 4 Oct 1983 Washington DC 40th Anniversary of the introduction of the Liberator Mk3 to Royal Air Force Bomber Operations 14 December 1942. Cover depicts B24 Liberators of No 703 Sqn, No 445 bomb group USAAC. Squadron Commander Lt Col James Stewart RAF Badge 104 Sqn Personally signed Lt.Gen.lra. C.Eaker. USAF As World War II commander of both the 8th Air Force in England and the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces, Gen. Ira C. Eaker was one of the most important figures in air warfare. April 1945 marked a turning point for Eaker's career and for the something he called the new Air Force. Gen. Ira C. (Clarence) Eaker one of America's great air pioneers. The Ira Eaker Aviation Museum in Dallas is a fitting tribute to the son of a Texas tenant farmer who enlisted as a private in 1917, got his wings at Kelly Field in San Antonio, and ended his career as a four-star general in 1947. The museum is also another in a long list of honours for the man who commanded both the 8th Air Force and the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces during World War II. Eaker was commander of 8th Air Force when it deployed to England in early May 1942. By April 1945, he had accomplished his task by helping defeat Nazi Germany and freeing Western Europe. Before the end of the war, Eaker, like many other Army Air Force leaders, had made up his mind that the military should be reorganized. He wanted the services unified and the air arm to have parity with the Army and Navy. On April 13, his 49th birthday, Eaker was satisfied that the war in Europe was over, and made plans to go back to Washington, according to his biographer. After returning to AAF headquarters in April 1945, Eaker "was in the forefront in developing force structure, redeployment plans and organizational plans for the post-war Air Force," stated an Air Force history report. The history report also points to Eaker as one of the top men at AAF headquarters in 1945-47, when the AAF fought the successful battle for a separate Air Force. Eaker's executive officer during World War II writes that even before it was fashionable, the general had a nameplate on his desk that read "Air Force Spoken Here." In 1977, when Eaker was 81, he received the Wright Trophy, given annually to a civilian for aiding the cause of aviation. Two years later, at age 83, he received the Congressional Gold Medal an award first given to George Washington in 1777, and regarded ever since as the non-combatant equivalent of the Medal of Honour. Lt Col Robert Johnson USA Pilot WW11 Ace 27 Details and photo of Eaker. Eaker died on Aug. 6, 1987 RAF Ref no B33c. Certified copy No 1184 of 1520.very few additional Signed Johnson Good condition Est. £10 - 15
