FERMI ENRICO: (1901-1954) Italian Physicist, also known as the “Architect of the nuclear age” or “Architect of the atomic bomb”. Fermi was the creator of the world´s first nuclear reactor, the Chicago Pile-1. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1938 for his works on induced radioactivity by neutron bombardment. Fermi coined the name “neutrino”, and the particles that obey the exclusion principle are called “fermions” after him. Fermi worked on the Manhattan Project during WWII. Rare A.L.S., `Enrico Fermi´, two pages, 4to, Rome, 24th April 1929, on the “Istituto Di Fisica della Universita di Roma” letterhead, to a Doctor, in Italian. A cleanly written letter by Fermi, asking several questions to his correspondent, and stating in part `What is the net compensation, inclusive of travel expenses, for Professor Michele Cantone of the Royal University of Naples for only one session held in Rome?..´, further asking similar question regarding Senator Professor Antonio Garbasso at the University of Florence. In excellent condition. EX
OPPENHEIMER J. ROBERT: (1904-1967) American Theoretical Physicist, known as the `father of the atomic bomb' for his role in the Manhattan Project during World War II. Scarce T.L.S., `Robert Oppenheimer´, one page, 4to, Princeton, 26th August 1963, on the letter heading of The Institute For Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey, to famous journalist Mr. Norman Cousins, Saturday Review, New York. Oppenheimer states `I very much liked your letter in the Times yesterday. I hope that you will like this very brief talk that I gave last June in Chicago´ Signed in bold blue ink at the base. Very small and light crease to the upper left corner with two extremely small pinholes as a result of a former staple, otherwise about VG Norman Cousins (1915-1990) was a noted political journalist and active world peace advocate.
FERMI ENRICO: (1901-1954) Italian Physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1938. Fermi worked on the Manhattan Project to develop an atomic bomb during World War II. A very fine Autograph Statement signed, one page, slim oblong 8vo, Stockholm, 11th December 1938, in Italian. Fermi writes, in full, 'I am convinced that physical sciences should orientate themselves towards an intense collaboration with other sister sciences and equally with biology. I hope that such a tendency, which is developing, could benefit both branches'. An excellent scientific related statement signed by Fermi at a significant point in his life and career. Some light creasing and age wear to the edges, only very slightly affecting a few words of text but not the signature, about VG Fermi had been one of just two Nobel Laureates (the other being Pearl S, Buck) present at the Stockholm Concert Hall on 10th December 1938, the day before signing the present statement, to receive their Nobel Diplomas and Medals from King Gustav V. Following his visit to Stockholm in December 1938 Fermi did not return to Italy but instead travelled to New York City with his family where they applied for permanent residency looking to become US citizens primarily due to the racial laws in Italy. It was not long after arriving in New York, in January 1939, that Fermi and other scientists, including Niels Bohr, began to discuss the newly discovered phenomenon of fission as a possible source of nuclear power.
CHADWICK JAMES: (1891-1974) English Physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1935, in recognition of his discovery of the neutron. Chadwick was head of the British team who worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II. A good and lengthy A.L.S., James Chadwick, four pages, 4to, Cambridge, 13th November 1969, on is printed stationery, to Leslie R. Groves Jr. Chadwick informs Groves on Mrs Gowing visit, stating in part `We had a visit from Mrs Gowing a few days ago. She came to collect a draft of her account of the first few years after the war - an enormous volume of material…It depressed me to read about it. Mrs Gowing hopes to have a draft of her second volume completed by Easter. This will then have to be submitted to some high authorities who may, and probably will, demand that some references to political discussions should be cut out…Provided that she has sufficient time and energy to digest all the material she has collected, I believe that the second volume will be quite interesting.´ Chadwick further refers to a Canadian nuclear work, saying `I read about half of “Canada´s Nuclear Story” and then gave up. I found two quotations from notes by John Cockcroft, one is quite untrue, the second gives a false implication. And now recently, in reading Mrs. Gowing´s draft…I found references to at least two complaints of the Canadian team about which I never heard. If these complaints were valid they should have been made to me and to you.´ And referring to the Canadian nuclear team, Chadwick concludes `They do not seem to have realized how fortunate they were.´ Folded, with very small, minor creasing, otherwise VG Leslie Groves (1896-1970) United States Army Corps of Engineers Lieutenant General. Groves oversaw the construction of the Pentagon and directed the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb during WWII.Margaret Gowing (1921-1998) English Historian who helped to produce several volumes of the officially sponsored history of WWII. Known for her books commissioned by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, about the early history of Britain´s atomic weapons program. When she asked Chadwick what he intended to do with the wooden filing cabinets in his attic, and he replied “Burn them”, she helped to establish the Centre for Scientific archives in 1972 to house such resources.Wilfrid Eggleston published in 1965 “Canada´s Nuclear Story”.John Cockcroft (1897-1967) British Physicist. Director of the first Canadian nuclear laboratory in 1944. Cockcroft won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1951 for splitting the atomic nucleus in 1932 at Cambridge.
[GROVES LESLIE]:(1896-1970) United States Army Corps of Engineers Lieutenant General. Groves oversaw the construction of the Pentagon and directed the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb during WWII. A very interesting content T.L.S., `Sherfield´, one page, 4to, London, 26th November 1968, sent to Groves by Roger Mellor Makins, 1st Baron Sherfield (1904-1996) British Diplomat who served as British Ambassador to the United States 1953-56. Baron Sherfield reassures Leslie Groves on qualifications of new British Ambassador to the United States, stating in part `It is perfectly true that he made his name as a television interviewer, that he was a left-wing socialist, and that he edited the left-wing periodical "The New Statesman". But he was also a competent and successful Junior Minister in the Atlee Government. Since 1964, he has occupied the very demanding post of High Commissioner in India with ability and distinction.´, further adding `I consider that he has the qualities to make a good British Ambassador in Washington. There are very few people whose past sayings or writings will stand up to really close scrutiny, and this applies particularly to a journalist or editor. I am sure that the new president is a big enough man to understand this..´ Folded. EX Major John Freeman (1915-2014) British Politician, Diplomat and Broadcaster. High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to India 1965-68. He was appointed British Ambassador to the United States 1969-71 under British Prime Minister Harold Wilson tenure. Freeman had refer to Nixon as "A discredited and outmoded purveyor of the irrational and inactive" whose defeat for the Republican nomination would be a "victory for decency".

Outstanding and Historically Interesting Luftwaffe Photograph Album, Log Book and Soldbuch of Observer Leutnant Konrad Ellermann Who Flew Operationally During the Spanish Civil War as Part of the Condor Legion and Later Flew Sea Planes in Norway, the first album in the grouping begins with a coloured illustration of the crossed flags of Spain and Nazi Germany with the slogan “Wir kampften in Spanien”, the photographs begin with scenic images taken in various parts of Spain and also Norway (Bergen), images soon become of his time in Spain with many images of aircrew wearing the Spanish pilots wing, as was common with aircrew serving with the Condor Legion, many good images of various aircraft, mostly sea planes, good air shots, damage to aircraft etc. Series of images of a funeral of a member of the Legion Condor with a written page giving full details. Good images of bomb damage, aerial images of a bombing raid, targeted ships at sea, etc. All the pages are very nicely annotated in German giving clear information about what is being shown in the images. The first album is complete with 217 images, most of which are excellent quality and interesting. The second album in the grouping relates to his WW2 service with sea planes in Norway and Narvik. Many large images of various Luftwaffe aircraft and the crews etc. Many aerial shots as the unit moved to attack the French coast, mostly Brest. As with the first album, most of the pages are beautifully annotated and he has drawn artistic images of the squadron badges in which he has served. The second album contains approximately 187 images. The log book continues with operational sorties during WW2, in total 378 operational sorties are recorded. The last item in the grouping is his original Soldbuch, which has uniform photograph to the inside. The book is well filled out with a large amount of entries and stamps. For nearly 10,000 of these medium bombers were produced, making it the most common -- and most successful -- aircraft of its type during World War II. In fact, it was one of these dependable airplanes that carried Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle over Tokyo for a surprise attack in April 1942. Though not designed to be launched from aircraft carriers, this plane and 15 others took off from the USS Hornet and flew 650 miles to bomb the Japanese capital. Never suspecting they could be attacked at home -- in fact, they had been told it was impossible -- the Japanese people were shocked by the bold American raid. However, it would be more than two years before American bombers again ventured over the land of the rising sun. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B13203)
