A Fine Second War Fleet Air Arm Barracuda pilot’s campaign group of seven awarded to Lieutenant Commander E. M. Britton, Fleet Air Arm and Royal Navy, who was twice mentioned in despatches - firstly for leading anti-shipping operations with 828 Squadron out of Ta Kali, Malta in 1943, during which time he scored a direct hit on an Italian destroyer; and secondly as a Wing Leader during the strike on Emmahaven Harbour, Sumatra, 26 August 1944, when he once again secured a direct hit on a motor vessel. After commanding the 12th Torpedo Bomber Reconnaissance Wing, as part of the British Pacific Fleet, Britton was posted to the command of 728 Squadron at Malta. It was whilst serving with the latter that he suffered fatal injuries when his Beaufighter crashed on take-off in June 1946 Naval General Service 1915-62, 1 clasp, Palestine 1936-1939 (Sub-Lieut. E. M. Britton. R.N.); 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star; Burma Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, M.I.D. Oak Leaf, mounted for wear, generally good very fine or better (7) £900-£1,200 --- M.I.D. London Gazette 5 October 1943. The original recommendation states: ‘Lieutenant Britton arrived in Malta on 11 April 1943, and commanded 828 Squadron for a period of four weeks. Subsequently he flew as a senior pilot showing great keenness for operational flying. During his tour of duty in Malta he has taken part in 11 sorties, several of which he has led, and has now completed 60 operational hours. He secured a direct hit with a bomb on an Italian destroyer, scored near misses on E-Boats, and bombed a number of land objectives.’ M.I.D. London Gazette 2 January 1945. The original recommendation states: ‘He was Wing Leader of the strike on Emmahaven harbour, Sumatra. This strike achieved an estimated six hits on two motor vessels and considerable damage to harbour installations. He has always shown zeal and fighting spirit and led this strike in a most competent manner. He himself scored one hit and one near miss on a motor vessel.’ Edwin Michael Britton was born in 1920, the son of Brigadier E. J. J. Britton, C.B.E., D.S.O., and was educated at Cheltenham College (Hazelwell House 1933-37). He was appointed a Midshipman in the Royal Navy in May 1938. Subsequently qualifying as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm, he was advanced to Lieutenant in June 1941. In his subsequent wartime career, Britton held several Squadron and Wing commands, his first such appointment occurring on 7 August 1942, when he became C.O. of 788 Squadron in East Africa for a few weeks. He took command of 828 Squadron on 12 March 1943, and led his unit’s Barracudas on anti-shipping operations out of Ta Kali, Malta, gallant work that won him his first “mention”, not least for successful strikes in the Sicilian Channel. In May 1943 the squadron carried out attacks on shipping along with 821 squadron, and provided flare illuminations for bombardments of Pantellaria island. Then followed a few weeks at Monastir in Tunisia. In total 828 and 830 squadrons had accounted for sinking 30 enemy ships and damaged another 50 ships. 828 squadron disbanded at Monastir in September 1943, and Britton assumed command of 831 Squadron during the same month. Britton advanced to Acting Lieutenant Commander, and was appointed to command 52 Torpedo Bomber Reconnaissance (T.B.R.) Wing, 5 January 1944. The latter comprised of 829 and 831 Squadrons, and was one of the first to fly the Fairey Barracuda. Britton was appointed Wing Leader of the newly formed 2 TBR Wing (828 and 841 Squadrons), 24 January 1944, and later the same day took over 12 TBR Wing (815 and 817 Barracuda Squadrons). The Wing sailed east with HMS Begum to join the British Pacific Fleet and on arrival in August joined HMS Indomitable. Flying off HMS Indomitable they dive bombed oil storage facilities and airfields at Sabang, Sumatra, then on 26 August 1944, targets on Emmahaven (Operation Banquet). Flying with 815 Squadron as Wing Leader, Britton won his second “mention” for gallantly leading a successful Barracuda strike from the carrier Indomitable against enemy shipping and installations in Emmahaven harbour, Sumatra. Britton scored a direct hit on a motor vessel during the raid. Britton was subsequently posted to command 778 Squadron in February 1945, and remained in this posting until the end of the war. At the start of the following year he was appointed to command 728 Squadron at H.M.S. Falcon, R.N.A.S. Hal Far, Malta. Britton suffered multiple burns and injuries as the result of an aircraft accident when his Bristol 156 Beaufighter TF.X S/No. NV483 crashed on take-off during the first week of June 1946. He died as a result of these injuries whilst trying to recuperate on the Hospital Ship Maine, 21 June 1946. Lieutenant Commander Britton is buried in the Capuccini Naval Cemetery, at Kalkara. Southern Harbour, Malta. Sold with copied recommendations for both M.I.D.s and operation report for the strike on Emmahaven harbour.

JERVIS JOHN: (1735-1823) 1st Earl of St. Vincent. British Admiral of the Fleet, a patron of Horatio Nelson. An excellent series of twenty-three A.Ls.S. and twenty-four Ls.S., J Jervis (4) and St. Vincent, 84 pages (total), 4to and folio, HMS Ville de Paris, off Cadiz, and Gibraltar, June 1797 - April 1799, to James Matra. The Admiral writes to His Majesty's Consul General at Tangier on various subjects, making several references to Nelson and Napoleon, and in some letters expressing typical bravado, in part -'You will very much benefit His Majs. Service and oblige me by sending a fast rowing boat to Gibraltar with the inclosed, the early delivery of it being of great importance to the King's service. I beg you will make my Compliments to Mrs. Matra & Miss Ainslio & tell them if they have the smallest curiosity to see the Fleet in the proud position it has taken I will send a Frigate for them, ignorant whether your instructions will permit you to be of the party I can only say I shall be glad to see you at all times……Should you be able to purchase a few ostrich feathers of the finest quality for me I shall be much obliged to you' (12th June 1797)'The Falucha named the Embark with your Passport escaped the vigilance of the advanced Squadron and got into Cadiz…..but had not the same good fortune coming out. I cannot entertain the smallest doubt of the vessel and cargo being Spanish…..yet from political motives and consideration of your character I have directed her to be carried into Tangier…..making the Spaniards who navigate her Prisoners of War' (20th June 1797)'Rear Admiral Nelson gave Don Joseph de Mazzarredo an alert on Monday night, three or four shells into Cadiz took two Bomb Vessels carrying each an 84 ½ inch Mortar & a Launch with the Commandant of the Flotilla who lost sixteen or eighteen men and was himself wounded before he surrendered. Another visit was intended last night, but a strong Northerly wind prevented its being carried into effect. If Don Joseph really means to give us Battle he has lost several favourable opportunities when our Force was much smaller than it is at present' (6th July 1797)'…..the French will certainly acquire a great addition to their Marine, by this stroke at Venice, but I am under no apprehension for the effect of it here. I see no difficulty whatsoever in the way of a negotiation for peace. Although I think a total change of men and measures in England absolutely necessary for the salvation of the Country. I fear a great deal of mischief will ensue before that event takes place, it being evident to me that those in Office will cling to the last moment and the King hads been taught to dread reforms' (27th July 1797)'I have detached a sufficient force of frigates to overcome the Spaniards…..The order for the departure of the Christians owes its origin probably to the intrigues of the French, who are busy & active in every quarter of the Globe, to disturb the peace of mankind and unhinge all government' (29th July 1797)'The nerves of all Spaniards are so shattered that they will not believe they shall ever be at peace until the definitive Treaty is signed. My firm opinion is that we shall have the preliminaries in a few days. A Spanish officer of the Neptune who came on board the Orion…..with a flag of truce held the same language I do and gave sound reasons for it' (8th August 1797)'A letter of the 22 of July recd. at Cadiz from Lisle says the negotiation is going on satisfactorily & cannot fail' (10th August 1797)'Your communication…..of yesterday certainly is indicative of a continuation of this devasting war; yet from intelligence brought by a Lieutenant of the Neptune sent out by Mazzarredo yesterday & by every appearance here such as fishing boats innumerable coming out, many of them with refreshments for our Fleet, beyond anything I have observed since the first of April, I adhere to my opinion that we are on the eve of Peace……the distractions in France are much more likely to accelerate Peace than to prolong War. The Portuguese are sanguine that they shall succeed in their negotiations, which my correspondent asserts is a separate one' (23rd August 1797)'Spain is languishing for Peace on any terms and Holland shews great jealousy of the attempts made by France…..to make her a slavish province of the French Empire' (26th August 1797)'A Moorish vessel….was captured by the boats of the Spanish Ships of War Yester-Morn and towed into Cadiz, there was a sharp cannonade between their Gun and Mortar Boats and our Launches on the occasion; I have stated to Don Josef de Mazzarredo that if the Master of the Vessel is not permitted to sell his Cargo to the best advantage I will retaliate on every neutral vessel from Barbary' (10th September 1797)'Many thanks for your interesting letters..with the Table of Laws the Tyrants, in the Directory, have cram'd down the throats of the two Councils, if a great, numerous people like the French submit to this abominable violation - Liberty is but a name' (6th October 1797)'Many thanks for the cymbals, the louder they are the better for a Marine Band' (27th November 1797)'We have intelligence by the Fishing Boats that a Line of Battle Ship and some Frigates escaped out of Cadiz during the Easterly gale in the night of Monday or Tuesday last. I shall be very glad to ascertain the truth of this report' (14th April 1798)'It may not be amiss to convey to the Emperor that if he prohibits the exportation of live cattle to Gibraltar and to the Fleet it may occasion a total stop to the export of any commodity from his dominions….I wish His Imperial Majesty not to be impressed with an idea that either the Fleet I have the honor to command or the Garrison of Gibraltar is at all dependent on supplies from His territory; we certainly can obtain them from other quarters without any difficulty…Should the Emperor become decidedly hostile I always have in my power to annihilate Tangier as a place of Export, and I can do him more mischief to the Southward than he is aware of' (20th April 1798)'His Imperial Majesty of Morocco will come to his senses very soon if His Majesty of Gibraltar will persevere, the revocation of the Order not to admit Moorish vessels to Practique at Gibraltar was an unfortunate measure…I enclose a list (no longer present) of Admiral Nelson's squadron to which the Lion will be added in a few days. I am under no apprehension for the event of a meeting between them and the Toulon Fleet, it is a consummation devoutly to be wished' (24th June 1798)'[Thomas] Troubridge joined Nelson off Toulon...and they proceeded in quest of the French Armada..it was spotted..a few leagues to the Westward of Sicily steering for that Island' (3rd July 1798)'The Barbarian Language held by the Emperor towards Lord Henry Paulett has I am sure been retorted in a dignified manner by you. It may not be amiss to convey to His Imperial Majesty and His Ministry that I can fill up the entrance to all his Ports, without the loss of a Man, and with great facility put an entire stop to the whole of the Trade of His Subjects. When I receive an official of Nelson's action with Buonaparte you shall have an authentic copy to thunder in the ears of these wretched deluded people' (24th July 1798)OWING TO LIMITATIONS IMPOSED BY THE SALEROOM THE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF THIS LOT CAN NOT BE DISPLAYED HERE. Please contact us directly for further information.

1993 Land Rover 110 2.5TDiMake: Land Rover Model: 110 TDYear: 1993Mileage: 56000VIN: SALLDHAF7KA927747Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: L819CFXTransmission: manualRegistered in October 1993, this is a genuine armoured police Land Rover Defender, although its current 'Police Bomb Disposal' appearance may be more down to it recently being owned by a TV and movie vehicle supply company. While little is known about the 110 2.5TDi's first few years, the Penman Engineering-converted vehicle was was acquired in 1996 by Birmingham-based rail consultancy firm Aegis Engineering. It stayed there until 2000 when it was purchased by South Yorkshire Police. There is a record of its time there, chronicling servicing, other maintenance, and safety checks, from 2000 to 2010, during which period the mileage went from 42,404 to 53,226 miles. Two former keepers are recorded, and there's a fresh MoT valid until February 2023. The paperwork file includes the V5C, plus MoT certificates from 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022. The current mileage is recorded as 56,824 miles, although this isn't warranted. The Land Rover, which is in generally good order throughout, comes with its police-fitted equipment such as side skirts, front bull bar, roof lamp and emergency lights still in place. It drives as it should, although, as an armoured Land Rover, it is a heavy vehicle to pilot.

Historical and Medical Interest: An earthenware culture vessel for the large-scale production of penicillin, circa 1941, oblong in shape with cylindrical spout, glazed in the interior, 22.5cm x 28cm x 6cm, signed and enscribed in pen - 'The Penicillin culture vessel was designed by Norman Heatley 1940 - a member of the team who developed the drug administered later that year Sir William Dunn Pathology lab University of Oxford', with a letter of provenance from the vendor: A similar vessel was recently shown on the Antique Roadshow with a valuation of £15,000 to £20,000 .Dr Norman Heatley, OBE DM - Penicillin's Unsung Hero In the early 1940s, a team of Oxford University scientists, led by Professor Howard Florey, carried out pioneering research work which led to the large-scale production of penicillin - the 'miracle drug' that saved thousands of Allied troops' lives and literally millions since. Dr Norman Heatley was a key member of that team. Born in 1911 in Woodbridge, Suffolk and with a doctorate from Cambridge, Heatley joined Florey's research team at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology in Oxford in 1936. Soon after the start of World War II, work began on penicillin after Sir Ernst Chain read Sir Alexander Fleming's 1929 paper on penicillin and thought the subject worthy of further research. With limited resources in wartime Britain, the Oxford team's ingenuity was taxed to the full. Heatley was responsible for many of the technical innovations that were necessary to carry out the extremely difficult processes of purification and extraction of penicillin. He also became expert at growing the mould from which penicillin was extracted. Initially all kinds of containers were used ranging from sheep-dip tins to gallon juice bottles, biscuit tins and bedpans. The solution was a stackable rectangular ceramic vessel designed by Heatley who organised their immediate production. Heatley also monitored the experiment on mice in 1940 which first showed penicillin's great potential, and grew the penicillin for the first clinical tests on human patients in Oxford in 1941. Britain's full engagement in the war meant that further development and large-scale manufacture of penicillin could not realistically take place here; the collaboration of the USA would be needed. Ignoring the danger, Heatley and Florey flew to the US in 1941 to share their knowledge and to try to enlist American support. Fortunately this was forthcoming, and treatment of soldiers began in North Africa in April 1943. Soon, increased production of penicillin became the second highest priority at the American War Department. Only the development of the atom bomb was considered more important. The US government encouraged chemical and pharmaceutical firms to collaborate without fear of potential antitrust violations with the result that penicillin became available in time for the closing stages of the war. Fleming, Florey and Chain shared the Nobel prize for their work on penicillin in 1945. Various studies since the 1980s have argued that Heatley's contribution was seriously underestimated. In apportioning the credit for penicillin's development, Professor Sir Henry Harris linked the four principal scientists: 'Without Fleming, no Chain or Florey; without Chain, no Florey; without Florey, no Heatley; without Heatley, no penicillin'. In 1990 Heatley was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Medicine - an unprecedented award from Oxford University - in recognition of his great contribution. Norman Heatley, a kind, much loved, and self-effacing man, died in January 2004

TRIAL OF 1909 - THE CURTIS BENNETT PAPERSCollection of fifty-seven letters and postcards to Sir Henry Curtis Bennett from family, friends and members of the public, some anonymous, congratulating him on his imminent knighthood and his promotion to Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, showing their support after the '...recent dastardly & diabolic attempt on your life...' and concerns for his safety ('...do be careful of all letters, parcels & visitors to your house...'), all speaking in the strongest terms against the 'vile' and devilish suffragettes ('evil... hysterical maniacs... Let all militants 'starve' themselves...'), supporting his strong stance ('...more power to your elbow...') and suggesting ways he can deal with them ('...the glory of a woman is her hair, if she won't keep quiet cut it off. You would soon put a stop to all this violence...'), several from women ('... I am heartily ashamed of my own sex... if I thought that my little girl (aged 9 months) would grow up like one of these, I would rather lay her to rest, at once... I grant that women should have the vote but they are hindering the good of the Cause...'), one letter from a maid giving the names of suffragettes hiding from the police ('...they are hiding Miss Lillian Linton... I will come forward for the Truth if necessary...'), c. 140 pages, dust-staining, small tears and marks, 4to and 8vo, [various addresses], May 1913; with a copy of the order of service for Curtis Bennett's burial service on 6 June 1913 (quantity)Footnotes:'IF THEY WON'T EAT, LET THEM DIE': letters to the suffragettes' nemesis, Bow Street Magistrate Henry Curtis Bennett. The issue of female suffrage was part of a much wider debate on the equality of the sexes at this time (the so-called 'Woman Question') and this correspondence, prompted by an attempt on the life of the Bow Street Magistrate, serves to demonstrate the widespread public feeling against suffragism in general: '...the anti-suffragists could plausibly claim to speak for a silent majority of men and women who feared that valuable gender differences would be diluted by too much political equality...' (www.bl.uk). What is particularly evident here, however, is their distaste for the militant tactics of the suffragette wing of the movement, whose extreme behaviour certainly isolated many supporters of female suffrage, such as the suffragist leader Millicent Fawcett, who believed that votes for women would and should be achieved by peaceful means. To them, these women are 'savages', 'horrible female miscreants', 'misguided' and 'villainous', displaying 'very un-English' uncivilised behaviour. They are diabolical 'female fiends' and clearly mad ('militancy is another word for insanity'). One correspondent, the architect of Buckingham Palace, Sir Aston Webb, writes of '...the evil machinations of these disgraceful suffragists...'. The women correspondents write just as vociferously as the men. There are several letters from women who are ashamed of their sex - one self-proclaimed 'septuagenarian spinster' suggests flogging, another 'peaceable quiet woman' suggests deportation to the remote island of Staffa in the north of Scotland. On 21 October 1908, at Bow Street Magistrates Court Sir Henry Curtis Bennett (1846-1913) famously tried Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst and Flora Drummond for inciting a breach of the peace by circulating a handbill during a demonstration in Trafalgar Square on 13 October urging their WSPU supporters to 'rush' the House of Commons. After a four-day trial, all three were found guilty and sentenced to three months imprisonment. After that he was a marked man. As well as the failed parcel-bomb attempt discussed here, he survived another assassination attempt when two suffragettes attempted to push him over the cliffs at Margate (see London Evening Standard article transcribed on historyoffeminism.com website) after he convicted several suffragettes following a window-smashing raid on the West End, necessitating constant protection from officers of Scotland Yard. In May 1913 he took over as Chief Magistrate from Sir Albert de Rutzen who issued the arrest warrant for Dr Crippen and Ethel Le Neve. His son Sir Henry Honywood Curtis Bennett became a celebrated barrister and politician. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
