Frederick E. McWilliam HRUA RA (1909-1992)Crossed Legs (1978)Bronze, 38 x 40 x 28cm (15 x 15¾ x 11'')Signed with initials and numbered 4/5Cast by the Fiorini FoundryPlaster maquette, collection of F.E.McWilliam Gallery and Studio; edition 1/5, coll. Ulster Museum, Belfast, purchased 1980.Provenance: edition 4/5, purchased from the artist’s studio by the present owners, 1981.Literature: McWilliam’s notebook, work is numbered 78.10, ie the 10th work of 1978. When he embarked on his series of of ‘Legs’ 1977 - 1981, ‘he began the practice of making small accurate sketches of each work beside his notebook entry, which was not just for his won identification, but for the foundries, in this case the Fiorini Foundry, with whom he worked closely’. ‘The Sculpture of F.E.McWilliam’ Ferran & Holman, Lund Humphries, 2012. Exhibited: 'FE McWilliam', Taylor Gallery Dublin 1979; 'FE McWilliam Retrospective', the Arts Councils of Northern Ireland, 1981, cat. no. 143; exhibition tour, Ulster Museum, Belfast, April - May; Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin, May - June; Crawford Municipal Gallery, Cork, July - August. Tate Gallery, 1989, cat. no. 64, illus. p. 63; Beaux Arts, Bath, 1991; Shambles Gallery, Hillsborough, Co. Down, 2003; Inaugural exhibition at the F.E.McWilliam Gallery & Studio, 2008, exh.cat., illus. p.110. ‘Women of Belfast’ and ‘Woman in a Bomb Blast’ were a highly charged response by McWilliam to the devastating bombs in Belfast and in particular the bombing of the Abercorn restaurant in 1971. This series was followed by the ‘Banners’ which again focused on the Northern Ireland problems, a series instigated by the Peace People, mainly women, including his longtime friend Sheelagh Flanagan and many others, who marched for peace. After five years, reacting through his work to the effect of politics, McWilliam or ‘Mac’ as he was, affectionately called, by his friends, turned for respite to the subject matter he loved most, the beauty and form of female legs. The walls of his studio in Holland Park had many photographs of female forms, especially legs, some from Selfridges advertisements for ladies’ tights. The capriciousness of McWilliam’s imagination, used the subject of women’s legs as a means to create movement, beauty and intrigue. His observation of Indian carvings, especially in the temples of Orissa, which he studied first hand, informed him that the entire human form did not need to be present to give meaning to the subject. His return to the Surrealist idea of complete fragment and his use of legs, to convey this, as here in ‘Crossed Legs’ provides all the sensuality, smoothness and playfulness, as ever associated with the subject, stopping short of eroticism. His ability to give meaning in every foot movement and toe position portrays his love of fun and admiration for the female form. His friendship with the Dublin born ballerina, Ninette de Valois (1898 - 2001) founder of the Royal Ballet, whose portrait he carved in 1963, influenced him greatly, leading to his love of ballet and an appreciation of such an exacting art form in which arm and leg movement were paramount. Feet were important to McWilliam as a means to express emotions whether terror in ‘Women of Belfast’ which to him were - ‘the women as victims of man’s stupidity’ or the joy, anticipation and excitement in ‘Crossed Legs’.Denise FerranOctober 2017

We Guide to Strike print by Gil Cohen. Aircrew of 156 Squadron Pathfinder Force Signing Group Captain G Womersley DSO DFC MID Pilot, Flight Lieutenant W Cleland DSO DFC Pilot, Flight Lieutenant T Timperley DFC Pilot, Flight Lieutenant H Hernaman DFC Wireless Operator Air Gunner, Wing Commander W Bagg OBE DFC Wireless Operator Air Gunner, Pilot Officer D Briggs DFC Flight Engineer Bomb Aimer, Warrant Officer J Chapman DFM Flight Engineer Bomb Aimer, Flying Officer C Dee Wireless Operator Air Gunner, Flight Sergeant C Follit DFM Air Gunner, Flying Officer W Kerry Navigator, Warrant Officer R Noye DFC Wireless Operator Air Gunner, Flight Lieutenant D Reed DFM Wireless Operator Air Gunner, Warrant Officer J McCrum DFM Wireless Operator Air Gunner, Warrant Officer J Watson DFM Flight Engineer Bomb Aimer. Flying ahead of the main bomber stream, a Lancaster of 156 Squadron Pathfinder Force makes a run over its target in the heavily defended industrial Ruhr Valley. Extreme concentration can be observed in the crews eyes as they focus on their critical task of marking the target. The Ruhr, the greatest industrial area in the whole of Germany, was the most heavily defended target in the world. The Ruhr Valley was nearly always covered by an almost permanent smoke-haze which, at night made visual pin-pointing of towns below nearly impossible. The Pathfinder force was able to penetrate the industrial pollution with aircraft equipped with the blind-bombing devise known as Oboe. This technology afforded the ability to seek out targets regardless of weather conditions and illuminate desired areas with brilliant target markers which reflected back up from the ground through the haze. The application of the crews precise identification of the target locations will enable the following bomber strikes to be incisively accurate further crippling the German war effort. Approx. 30 x 24 inches this has been mounted and never rolled. Its in pristine condition and the colours stunning. Good Condition. All signed items come with our certificate of authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £3.95, EU from £4.95, Overseas from £6.95

Company of heroes by Robert Taylor print. In addition to the artist this magnificent edition is signed by Captain Rolland H. Whited Pilot of 34th Bomb Group B-17 Flying Fortress Queenie, Rolland Whited arrived in England with the 391st Bomb Squadron, 34th Bomb Group in April 1944. He flew his first combat mission on June 20th. A veteran of many heavy bombardment missions he flew on operations against Luftwaffe airfields, VI rocket sites, chemical plants and the railroad marshalling yards at Cologne and Ludwigshafen. After completing 26 missions on B-24s, the 34th re-equipped with B-17 Flying Fortresses. Rolland flew a further 8 missions on the B-17, flying his final mission in January 1945. He holds the Air Medal with three Oak Clusters in addition to the Distinguished Flying Cross. Also signed by Lieutenant Colonel Robert W. Dees assigned to the 4th and then 18th Squadron, 34th Bomb Group, Bob flew the South Atlantic route to Mendlesham, England in early 1944 and was soon in the thick of the action on operations against military and industrial targets in Germany and occupied Europe. He flew the first of his 31 combat missions on 24 May 1944, flying the B-24, before the 34th converted to B-17 Fortress on which he finished his tour. He had flown 31 combat missions, 14 of which were as lead crew pilot. Bob Dees was awarded the Air Medal with five Oak Clusters. In a painting packed with atmosphere and highly detailed content, this magnificent image not only brings to life the glorious Flying Fortresses of the USAAF, but also the lives of the brave young men who flew them, such as the two 34th Bomb Group skippers who signed each and every print. B-17s of the 34th Bomb Group returning to base after another gruelling daylight raid. Queenie, first home to Mendlesham today, has come to a standstill, the co-pilot already briefing the crew chief on the state of the aircraft. Measuring 575ft with a breadth of 63ft. she displaced nearly 22,000 tons and her triple screws gave her a brisk speed of 21 knots. The company went so far as to state in their own literature that The three steamships undoubtedly represent, on the Pacific, the high standard maintained by the "Mauretania" and the "Lusitania" on the Atlantic. Luxuriously appointed throughout to top Western specifications, they were elegantly furnished with Oriental-style Western furniture and decor and could accommodate 210 First; 57 Second and 754 Third Class passengers. Plying a regular route between Hong Kong and San Francisco, in 1926 the Toyo Line was taken over by Nippon Yusen and from 1932 she was laid up, eventually broken up in 1936. This model is a scarce survivor - modelled in the English style, there are several distinctly Japanese elements - such as the lacquered hull and rudder, and the multiple chain stays applied to the funnels. Having been displayed at the World's Fair in Brussels in 1910, it seems that it was donated to a local museum. As a consequence it survived the atomic bomb that devastated Nagasaki in 1945 and which incinerated every other Mitsubishi model. This model will be available for viewing at Imperial Road
