CHURCHILL (WINSTON)Shall We Commit Suicide?, first separate edition, second issue, 12pp., title within double rule border and with small device in centre, stapled as issued in self-wrappers, with a loosely inserted compliments slip printed on blue paper, FINE COPY [Cohen A74.2; Woods A33], 205 x 90mm., Reprinted from Nash's Pall Mall Magazine of September 24, 1924 [1924]Footnotes:'The following article on what may be expected in the event of a new war comes with authority from an Englishman who for may years has been actively identified with the war machinery of the British Empire' (Introduction). A fine Second War ‘Malta Convoy’ D.S.M. group of six awarded to Stoker Chief Petty Officer C. E. Hughes, Royal Navy, for services when H.M.S. Kingston was hit by a 15-inch shell and later sunk whilst undergoing repairs in Malta Dockyard, Hughes being wounded in the same air raid; he had previously received a mention in despatches having been recommended for the D.S.M. Distinguished Service Medal, G.VI.R. (K.58629 E. C. Hughes. Ch. Sto.) impressed naming; 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star, 1 clasp, North Africa 1942-43; Italy Star; War Medal 1939-45, with M.I.D. oak leaf, mounted as worn, extremely fine (6) £1,400-£1,800 --- D.S.M. London Gazette 8 September 1942” ‘For gallantry, skill and seamanship in H.M. Ships... Kingston... in a brilliant action against strong enemy forces which were driven off and severely damaged. This action resulted in the safe passage to Malta of an important convoy.’ The recommendation states: ‘For fine leadership, initiative and devotion to duty as senior rating of damage control parties when the ship was hit by a 15” shell. Through his efforts and organising ability a fire which might have proved serious was extinguished before it had a chance to get out of control.’ In his report to the Admiralty Commander Philip Sommerville, D.S.O., D.S.C., R.N., records: ‘I have the honour to report my proceedings during and after the action between the convoy escort and enemy surface forces during the passage of convoy MW10 from Alexandria to Malta. A Divisional torpedo attack was launched at an enemy Battleship accompanied by three Cruisers. These forces engaged the Division with main and secondary armaments. At 1846 Kingston was hit by a 15-inch shell which passed through the whaler on the starboard side, through No. 2 Boiler Room intake and the S.R.E. Room, and exploded under the port Oerlikon Platform. Shortly after managing a turn to fire our torpedoes the ship stopped. Before the enemy Battleship passed out of view she was seen to be on fire forward and the explosion of one torpedo was observed. The widespread damage to Kingston was quickly got under control by prompt and resourceful action by all hands. The fire in the S.R.E. Room was extinguished remarkably quickly. Nearly all the Torpedo tubes crew were killed or wounded and on the 4-inch gun deck no one escaped injury. Casualties were also sustained on the Oerlikon and searchlight platforms and at ‘X’ gun. One officer and fourteen ratings were killed and one officer and twenty ratings wounded. By 1905 the Kingston was able to proceed on the starboard engine at 16 knots which later increased to 20 knots. I proceeded independently to Malta. I entered Malta Harbour at 0838 on 23 March.’ Commander Philip Somerville was the son of Vice-Admiral H. C. Somerville and was killed in an air raid on Malta on Saturday 4 April 1942, along with one other officer and ten ratings, Chief Petty Officer Hughes being wounded in the same raid. Lieutenant G. J. Kirkby, D.S.C., later wrote to Hughes from H.M.S. Saunders on 29 October 1942:- ‘Dear Hughes, I was delighted to read your name among those in the recent list of awards for our action in March. Please accept my heartiest congratulations. It is a shame we are not still all happily together to celebrate in the old style in the Wardroom. I could then thank you personally for the splendid work you did on that occasion, and for your continuous hard work and efficiency and unfailing loyalty to all of us throughout all that grand commission. Are you recovered from the injuries you received in April? It nearly broke my heart to lose the Captain and so many friends, and to think of the old ship being so remorsely attacked during that unhappy period. I have been out of Destroyers since that time, but hope to go back very soon. Again let me congratulate you and wish you good luck.’ In his report to the Admiralty Lieutenant J. Cartwright, R.N., in temporary command of Kingston, wrote of her loss on 11 April 1942, when she received another direct hit which broke her back and she sank: ‘I regret to report the loss of H.M.S. Kingston under my command. The ship was dive bombed and sank in No. 4 Dock, being hit on the torpedo tubes by a bomb of heavy calibre. Georg Kolbe - - 1877 Waldheim/Sachsen - 1947 Berlin Junge Frau. 1926. Höhe: 128,5 cm (50,5 in). 1926. Bronze with black brown patina. Base with monogram, foundry mark 'H.Noack Berlin Friedenau' and inscription 'I' as well as with the stamp 'made in Germany'. One of 10 casts. Height: 128.5 cm (50.5 in). Cast before 1940 by art foundry Hermann Noack, Berlin-Friedenau. Only U.S. export casts were numbered '1' and '2', as lower import tax was levied on the first two casts; the number itself does not índicate the chronological order the casts were made in. For tax saving reasons some of the sculptures were assigned more than one number. • Lifetime cast. • Apart from this bronze to date no other copy has been offered on the international auction market. • A bronze cast of the 'Junge Frau' used to adorn the patio of Kolbe's residence. • From the notable collection of Henry Ford, president of the Ford Motor Company. PROVENANCE: Collection Mrs. Henry Ford II, Palm Beach/London. Private collection USA. LITERATURE: Ursel Berger, Georg Kolbe - Leben und Werk, with the catalog of the Kolbe sculptures at the Georg-Kolbe-Museum, Berlin 1990, cf. pp. 290 and 291. 'Among my Berlin acquaintances Kolbe is the one with the strongest personality. If you see him among all his works in his studio, every question becomes needless. You feel that this man is one with his work, that [sic!] nothing unneccesary will ever come from his hand.' Günter von Scheven about Georg Kolbe on January 17, 1932, quote from: Maria Frfr. von Tiesenhausen, Georg Kolbe. Briefe und Aufzeichnungen, Tübingen 1987, p. 129 Georg Kolbe was one of the most successful sculptors of his time. Kolbe initially studied painting in Dresden and Munich. After studying in Paris, where he came into contact with Rodin's sculptural work, Kolbe switched to sculpting. Now based in Berlin, Georg Kolbe had his artistic breakthrough when Ludwig Justi bought his sculpture 'Dancer' (1911/12) - which was highly acknowledged an exhibition at the Berlin Secession - for the collection of the Nationalgalerie. The First World War interrupted his artistic development, but he returned to Berlin unharmed in January 1919 and was able to build on the success he had before the war. Paul Cassirer dedicated a solo exhibition to Kolbe in the autumn of 1921. In 1927 he took part in a large exhibition at the Glaspalast in Munich. The sculpture 'Junge Frau' (Young Woman) was made at the peak of his creation, presumably after the same model as the 'Knieende' (Kneeling Woman). She stands in front of us in a completely relaxed pose, elegantly tilting her head just a little to one side, turning her face with the eyes half-closed away from us. In her beauty and nudity, she entirely rests within herself. Kolbe did not aim to create any spatial effect, but rather wanted to render a self-contained figure. However, she attracts the viewer's attention precisely because of the calm appeal she emanates. Without any grand gestures and in an allegedly simplified representation, he attained a striking expression of a harmony of body and soul despite all its tenderness. A cast 'Junge Frau' adorned the patio of Kolbe's residence on Sensburger Allee in Berlin. In an air raid on Berlin on December 16, 1943, a bomb landed exactly there and destroyed the sculpture of which only the head survived. Kolbe had the head restored and put it on a pedestal; it remained in his possession until his death and testifies to the sculptor's special bond with this figure. Lot 173

Lt. Gerald Archibald Arbuthnot (1872-1916) A collection of approx. 200 letters and photographs, ranging from 1878-1916The only son of Major General William Arbuthnot (1838-1893) and his second wife Selina Moncreiffe (1851-1877), Gerald served in the Navy as a young man, before becoming the MP for Burnley in 1910. During the First World War, Gerald rose to the rank of second lieutenant whilst serving in the Grenadier Guards, however he was later killed in action during the Battle of the Somme.A large proportion of the early letters are to his father, aunt Frances Gertrude Arbuthnot (1896-1938) and aunt Frances Rose Muir Mackenzie (née Moncreiffe 1850-1923) many of which were written whilst aboard the HMS Temeraire in his youth. Later letters are to his wife, daughter Cynthia, and other family members.Gerald's fate during WW1 is revealed in a series of letters within the collection. On September 18th 1916, Gerald writes his last letter to his wife Dulcie (née Mary Johanna Antoinette Dulcie Oppenheim) describing his movements:"We shall move about a bit the next 2 or 3 days. Don't get worried if you don't hear from me. We have heaps of officers killed and wounded...Asquith's son is killed and his nephew one of the Tennants. The latter was killed close to me and I helped bury him. I can't describe the horrible things I have seen- in the 24 hrs of it I had, this of course I missed, the most important part. Still I saw quite enough...Our men were splendid of course, many a good chap has gone. Now the rain is coming down in sheets I expect it will stop all of action for the moment. Mercifully I have a comfy tent! Give my love to Kenneth and May. Dear old Egton- how nice it would be to find oneself in that comfortable smoking room in all the cheerful surroundings that I associate with them both. I owe some of the best times I've ever had to old Ken. Yours Lovingly, Gerald...I'm awfully well"However, tragically, in a letter dated October 2nd 1916 written to Gerald?s Wife by his comrade Alex F. Irvine, he describes how Gerald meets his death just six days later:"...his last few hours were spent as he and I were the only two officers in the No. 1 Coy that day. In the night of the 24th we left our billets in Bernafay Wood to Guillemont station, where we picked up our guides. We then struck north leaving Ginchy on our right and came into our trenches about 1000 yards south of Les Bouefs, our objective for the next day. That night we spent in the trench. The next day till 12:35 the weather was fine and warm which was as well as there was no company headquarters of any sort and we had to sleep out with the men. Your husband had a narrow escape that morning as a bomb which had been buried detonated when struck with the spade. He escaped but the two men were each wounded. At 12:35 as arranged the assault took place and we both left the trench together, he going off to the right and I to the left a little way. We shouted good luck to each other as we parted, and that was the last time we spoke. I came very close to him again a minute or so later and it was there I was hit after which I can tell you nothing more. Both my orderlies had instructions that if I fell they were at once to report to him and I expect they did, so he carried on the company till he fell. I am afraid I can give you no more details. We were a good deal together for the last four days and we always hit it off very pleasantly together. All our plans came to nothing but the Battln. did very well, and I expect No.1 Coy with it. The senior NCO Sgt. Hant was also killed..."Amongst the condolences letters sent to Dulcie there is one from Gerald's uncle John James Hugh Henry [Murray later Stewart-Murray] (1840-1917), 7th Duke of Atholl, who describes his shock having received a letter from Gerald just "twice within the last few weeks", however he goes on to declare that "we must all die some time sooner or later and I cannot help thinking that if Gerald had had a choice he would have thought that there could be no death preferable to that he has met with"The collection also includes a 1914 Princess Mary Christmas present bullet pencil, as well as a number of photographs of Gerald during his time in the Navy, and even a typed letter from the suffragette Christabel Pankhurst received during his short time as an MP.Gerald was also recently brought back into the public eye. In 2018, Dr Kathryn Rix from the History of Parliament Trust discovered that Gerald, although having been one of only 24 members and former members of Parliament to have been killed in action, was missing from the Parliament's World War One memorial known as the Recording Angel. His name was finally added just weeks before the Armistice Day centenary.Provenance: From the estate of Lt. Gerald Arbuthnot thence by descent through the family
