Lot 202

AN HISTORICALLY-INTERESTING BELL POSSIBLY FROM THE BRIG/FIRESHIP MARY, 1808, cast in bell metal with crown top and raised lettering to front inscribed BRIG MARY 1808, complete with clapper -- 12¾ x 12¾in. (32.5 x 32.5cm.), The distinctive crown top suggests this bell was probably for naval rather than mercantile use. A candidate which fits quite neatly was one of twenty vessels nominally ‘hired’ in 1809 to supplement Lord Cochrane’s fireship attack on the powerful French squadron anchored in the Basque Roads. Mary is recorded as a brig of 100 tons and, like all these craft, was expended in the action of 11th April 1809. How her bell was recovered is not known at present, but the Île-d’Aix (the island and fort guarding the Basque Roads and harbour) is in shallow water - in fact many fireships missed their mark and one even grounded. The attack at Basque Roads comprised eleven ships of the line, seven frigates, four brig-sloops, two bomb vessels, six brigs, one schooner, two cutters, forty transports or fireships and three Congreve rocket barges - but Gambier refused to press home the advantage and forced a furious Cochrane to withdraw. Whilst great damage had been inflicted, the threat was not eradicated and the remaining French squadron continued to harry allied shipping until the end of the war. Please see lot 118 for an associated lot regarding the Battle of Aix/Basque Roads

LINDBERGH CHARLES: (1902-1974) American Aviator who made the first solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean, 20th - 21st May 1927. T.L.S., Charles, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p. (Darien, Connecticut), n.d. (8th February 1954), to Miss. Emily Davie. Lindbergh sends his correspondent some letters (no longer present) concerning a bomb inscription and asks 'How about using some quotes from William Ernest Hocking?' continuing 'They're pretty good -- I think he is top, in philosophy and otherwise -- Anne [Morrow Lindbergh, his wife] discovered him for me, as usual.' Lindbergh further writes 'I see you have Whitehead's name in the outline, now. Have you read his Adventure of Ideas? I think the first two or three and the last chapters are wonderful. The middle of the book is too much for me -- or at least it was the last time I attacked it, several years ago….I went up to Cambridge to talk to Whitehead once, years and years ago. He was an extraordinary man'. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Lindbergh. VG William Ernest Hocking (1873-1966) American Idealist Philosopher. Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) English Mathematician and Philosopher. His work Adventure of Ideas was published in 1933. Emily Davie Kornfeld (1915-1989) American Author and Actress who edited Profile of America: An Autobiography of the USA, to which Lindbergh wrote a foreword, and which was published in 1954. The book was a compilation of writing by various Americans including Jefferson and Thoreau and was a critically acclaimed best seller.

DU MAURIER DAPHNE: (1907-1989) British Author. T.L.S., Daphne, four pages, 8vo, Menabilly, Par, Cornwall, 21st December 1958, to 'My dear' (Foy Quiller-Couch). Du Maurier writes a social letter to her friend, thanking her for a Christmas gift which she had had an instinct to open early, 'The instinct was sound. As the first south-westerly in months blew the moors black, and I was bent double in my attempts to walk, your snug wind-cheater plus chest protector kept influenza at bay….Thank you a thousand times. Have you some hidden knitter in the isles of Shetland? The waistcoat is so well done, and not, I feel sure, by your own fair hands' and further reporting on her family, 'All goes fairly well here, though the Guardsman (her husband, Frederick Browning) is very up and down, and the groans of “I feel so ill“ pretty continuous, though mostly after a day or so in London. Every doctor tells him to give up, and then foolish friends, not knowing his history, say “Oh, but you'll be bored to tears in the country. It's madness to retire“. If they only knew he is perfectly content to potter. it's the conflicting advice that is so bad. Kits has his blood-and-thunder film ready to show us at Christmas. Miss Tod, Mr Burt, myself, are all murdered in it. Only Oenone survives. What a sport she is, she allowed herself to be filmed throwing a bomb out of the St. Austell train. It is only a matter of time before she is sent for by the police….Guardsman says he will “hold the fort“ while the Prince is away on his tour, and I don't really know what he means. Kits starts work on January 5th learning the film directing under Carol Reed, with the new Graham Greene story Our Man From Havana. He may find himself in Cuba amongst the rebels.' An entertaining letter. Some small, minor tape stains to the head of each page, only very slightly affecting two words of text, but not the signature, otherwise VG Foy Quiller-Couch - daughter of British writer Arthur Quiller-Couch (1863-1944), and a life-long friend of Du Maurier. Indeed, Du Maurier was accompanied by Foy Quiller-Couch when she became inspired with the storyline for her novel Jamaica Inn. Some years previously the two ladies were staying at Jamaica Inn and went riding on Bodmin Moor. They became lost in bad weather conditions and apparently sheltered for some time in a derelict cottage on the moor but were eventually led back to Jamaica Inn by their horses. Frederick Browning (1896-1965) British Lieutenant-General of World War II, deputy commander of the First Allied Airborne Army in Operation Market Garden, 1944. Browning served as Treasurer and Head of Office to the Duke of Edinburgh. Christian Du Maurier (1940- ) Youngest child of Daphne Du Maurier and Frederick Browning, who became a photographer and film-maker, as referred to in the present letter.
