WALLIS BARNES: (1887-1979) English Scientist & Inventor of the bouncing bomb used in Operation Chastise (The Dambusters Raid), 16th May 1943. A.L.S., Barnes, five pages, 4to, n.p., 18th September 1969, to George. Wallis writes a largely social letter to his friend, commenting that he has been in hospital for an operation on a slight hernia caused ‘by a very severe backfire on a large motor mower that gave me a violent blow in my right hand groin’ and further reflecting on his age, ‘Growing old is no fun, and Molly & I are wondering what we shall do if & when I ever have to retire’ although also referring to his work, ‘At 82 years I can & do still work full time at Vickers & am full of ideas. The new submarine is showing great promise, & between that & a new type of aircraft that should do some six to seven times the speed of sound I am more than busy….And one’s mind is continuously pre-occupied with problems of work. Do you remember Akela, the lone wolf in Kipling’s “Jungle Stories”? Once he missed his “kill”, he was himself killed by the pack that he had led for so long. I feel rather like Akela!’ Wallis also writes of his two adopted sons (‘whom we helped to rescue when their parents were killed by a bomb’) who are living in South Africa and Australia with their families. In a postscript Wallis recounts having met Sir Francis Chichester recently and having a long, interesting talk with him, ‘He wears specs for short sight. Very awkward in bad weather. He told me he licks his when salted up, & both hands are busy. Now I never thought of doing that at Cowes.’ A letter of interesting content. The upper portion of the first page is a little irregularly torn away, apparently with no loss of text except presumably the letterhead address, otherwise VG

PHILBY KIM: (1912-1988) British Intelligence Officer, a Double Agent and member of the spy ring known as the Cambridge Five. Philby defected to the Soviet Union in 1963. T.L.S., Kim Philby, two pages, 8vo, Moscow, 4th October n.y. (1961?), to Brian Rooney ('My dear Rooney') of G. Bell & Sons. Philby states that he remembers his correspondent from previous letters, 'especially for occasional news items about John at a time when he never wrote at all. There has been a slight (very slight) improvement since then; perhaps an average of 1 ½ letters per year.' He writes regarding the death of his sister, 'I am grateful for your kind words about Pat. I was very fond of her, and there was some discussion of her coming out here for a visit. Actually, the first report I heard was that she had been murdered, so the news that her death was natural was almost a relief. My eldest daughter, who was here in the summer, told me that she was looking very weak and thin, so I was half prepared for the news.' and further states 'As for your request about the Myth of QS, I doubt whether I have any legal standing in the matter. But, in case I have, I readily give my consent to your doing anything you like with it - - except of course destroying it. If the Saudi deal falls through, and you want to get rid of the MS, perhaps you would send it to me' before continuing 'By all means let John have anything that may be forthcoming from the Saudi, or any other, deal. As you say, I do not suppose that there will be much in it, but perhaps he could buy you a meal at some bomb-free eating place. Incidentally, you can take this consent as a blanket one to cover any other dealings you may have with my father's Nachlass. Somewhere there should be a vast tome (some half-million words) on Transjordan, written originally, I think, for Hale. Somewhat naturally, the latter wouldn't touch a book that size, and, as my father refused to cut out a single word, the matter rested in abeyance. Where the typescript is now, I have no idea.' Accompanied by the original envelope. Rare. VG Hillary 'Harry' St-John Bridger Philby (1885-1960), British Colonial office Intelligence officer, Explorer and Arabist, also known as Jack Philby or by his Arabic name Sheikh Abdullah. Father of Kim Philby.

Lot 681

British Empire Medal, to 771102 CORPORAL ERNEST MARMADUKE BOWES, RAFVR, awarded 1943 for his outstanding gallantry on two occasions dealing with burning Typhoons at his RAF base, extremely fine, RARE LONDON GAZETTE 14/03/1944: On two occasions this airman, while in charge of the crash tender, showed outstanding gallantry in his attempts to save the lives of pilots by quelling the flames of burning aircraft. The first incident occurred in August 1943, when two Typhoon aircraft had collided in the air bursting into flames on impact with the ground. The second took place in November 1943, when an aircraft landed from an operational sortie with a bomb which had failed to release; the bomb fell off during the landing run, exploded, and set the aircraft alight. In the face of great danger from exploding cannon shells and petrol tanks Corporal Bower, on both occasions, showed fine courage and devotion to duty by approach-ing, without hesitation, very close to the burning aircraft to enable his extinguisher to reach the flames. His excellent example encouraged the other airmen engaged in the fire fighting and enabled the flames to be subdued in a very short time.

Frederick E. McWilliam HRUA RA (1909-1992) Woman of Belfast II, 1972 Bronze, 57 x 74 x 28cm (22½ x 29 x 11") Signed with initials and numbered 2/5 Provenance: From the Collection of George and Maura McClelland and on loan from them to IMMA from 1999 - 2004; Private Collection Dublin Exhibited: "F.E. McWilliam: Sculpture 1972/3 Women of Belfast", Waddington Galleries, London, Oct/Nov 1973; "Women of Belfast: New Bronzes by F.E. No. 101; and "Nothern Artists from the McClelland Collection", IMMA 2004/5, and Droichand Arts Center 2005 The Women of Belfast series represents an attempt by the artist to address a specific event in Irish history, and relates to McWilliam's interest in humanity as a theme. The series was inspired by media images of the bombings of the Abercorn Restaurant in Belfast on a busy Saturday afternoon in March 1972. The latest in a series of death and destruction during the Troubles, this event caused nationwide revulsion as it was mainly women and children who were either killed or maimed, and particularly affected McWilliam. At the time the sculptor was working on the expressive potential of drapery, a fundamental idea in the history of art. Traditionally drapery is used to articulate the shape of the body underneath and to suggest particular emotion or ideas. In Women of Belfast this fundamental pictorial idea has been dislocated. The distorted forms of the women's clothing and their extended limbs work independently of each other to express the dehumanising effect of the violence. The extremity of movement and the unnatural distortions of the figures convey the force of the bomb blast, and their frozen nature encapsulates an extreme moment in history. The associated sketches retain a sense of emotional involvement which is absent in the bronzes. This demonstrates the fact that for McWilliam sculpture required the resolution of a pictorial or conceptual problem whereas drawing was a more spontaneous activity. Women of Belfast was another incarnation of McWilliam's interest and exploration of the human form throughout his career, yet with a personal and historic connection. George McClelland, by exhibiting the series in his gallery in 1973, played a vital role in giving McWilliam an opportunity to comment on the political situation at a crucial moment in Northern Irish history. We would like to thank Roisin Kennedy and Denise Ferran, whose research formed the basis of this catalogue entry. Literature: "F.E.
