A post-War ‘Minesweeping’ B.E.M. group of four awarded to Engine Room Artificer J. Dunsmore, Royal Navy British Empire Medal (Military) G.VI.R., 1st type (E.R.A.Cl.2 John Dunsmore. C/MX57370); Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Naval General Service 1915-62, 1 clasp, Minesweeping 1945-51 (C/MX57370 J. Dunsmore, E.R.A.2. R.N.) ‘R.N.’ corrected on last, generally very fine and better (4) £400-£500 --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, October 1997. B.E.M. London Gazette 1 January 1948: ‘In recognition of Operational Minesweeping and Mine and Bomb Disposal since the end of the War.’ The original Recommendation states: ‘Engine Room Artificer Second Class John Dunsmore, H.M.S. Bramble, has displayed outstanding qualities of zeal and devotion during operational minesweeping work, and by his personal example has inspired a similar effort in his subordinates. He carried out some particularly good repair work on one LL Diesel generator when a serious breakdown occurred.’

A Fine Second War Fleet Air Arm Barracuda pilot’s campaign group of seven awarded to Lieutenant Commander E. M. Britton, Fleet Air Arm and Royal Navy, who was twice mentioned in despatches - firstly for leading anti-shipping operations with 828 Squadron out of Ta Kali, Malta in 1943, during which time he scored a direct hit on an Italian destroyer; and secondly as a Wing Leader during the strike on Emmahaven Harbour, Sumatra, 26 August 1944, when he once again secured a direct hit on a motor vessel. After commanding the 12th Torpedo Bomber Reconnaissance Wing, as part of the British Pacific Fleet, Britton was posted to the command of 728 Squadron at Malta. It was whilst serving with the latter that he suffered fatal injuries when his Beaufighter crashed on take-off in June 1946 Naval General Service 1915-62, 1 clasp, Palestine 1936-1939 (Sub-Lieut. E. M. Britton. R.N.); 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star; Burma Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, M.I.D. Oak Leaf, mounted for wear, generally good very fine or better (7) £900-£1,200 --- M.I.D. London Gazette 5 October 1943. The original recommendation states: ‘Lieutenant Britton arrived in Malta on 11 April 1943, and commanded 828 Squadron for a period of four weeks. Subsequently he flew as a senior pilot showing great keenness for operational flying. During his tour of duty in Malta he has taken part in 11 sorties, several of which he has led, and has now completed 60 operational hours. He secured a direct hit with a bomb on an Italian destroyer, scored near misses on E-Boats, and bombed a number of land objectives.’ M.I.D. London Gazette 2 January 1945. The original recommendation states: ‘He was Wing Leader of the strike on Emmahaven harbour, Sumatra. This strike achieved an estimated six hits on two motor vessels and considerable damage to harbour installations. He has always shown zeal and fighting spirit and led this strike in a most competent manner. He himself scored one hit and one near miss on a motor vessel.’ Edwin Michael Britton was born in 1920, the son of Brigadier E. J. J. Britton, C.B.E., D.S.O., and was educated at Cheltenham College (Hazelwell House 1933-37). He was appointed a Midshipman in the Royal Navy in May 1938. Subsequently qualifying as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm, he was advanced to Lieutenant in June 1941. In his subsequent wartime career, Britton held several Squadron and Wing commands, his first such appointment occurring on 7 August 1942, when he became C.O. of 788 Squadron in East Africa for a few weeks. He took command of 828 Squadron on 12 March 1943, and led his unit’s Barracudas on anti-shipping operations out of Ta Kali, Malta, gallant work that won him his first “mention”, not least for successful strikes in the Sicilian Channel. In May 1943 the squadron carried out attacks on shipping along with 821 squadron, and provided flare illuminations for bombardments of Pantellaria island. Then followed a few weeks at Monastir in Tunisia. In total 828 and 830 squadrons had accounted for sinking 30 enemy ships and damaged another 50 ships. 828 squadron disbanded at Monastir in September 1943, and Britton assumed command of 831 Squadron during the same month. Britton advanced to Acting Lieutenant Commander, and was appointed to command 52 Torpedo Bomber Reconnaissance (T.B.R.) Wing, 5 January 1944. The latter comprised of 829 and 831 Squadrons, and was one of the first to fly the Fairey Barracuda. Britton was appointed Wing Leader of the newly formed 2 TBR Wing (828 and 841 Squadrons), 24 January 1944, and later the same day took over 12 TBR Wing (815 and 817 Barracuda Squadrons). The Wing sailed east with HMS Begum to join the British Pacific Fleet and on arrival in August joined HMS Indomitable. Flying off HMS Indomitable they dive bombed oil storage facilities and airfields at Sabang, Sumatra, then on 26 August 1944, targets on Emmahaven (Operation Banquet). Flying with 815 Squadron as Wing Leader, Britton won his second “mention” for gallantly leading a successful Barracuda strike from the carrier Indomitable against enemy shipping and installations in Emmahaven harbour, Sumatra. Britton scored a direct hit on a motor vessel during the raid. Britton was subsequently posted to command 778 Squadron in February 1945, and remained in this posting until the end of the war. At the start of the following year he was appointed to command 728 Squadron at H.M.S. Falcon, R.N.A.S. Hal Far, Malta. Britton suffered multiple burns and injuries as the result of an aircraft accident when his Bristol 156 Beaufighter TF.X S/No. NV483 crashed on take-off during the first week of June 1946. He died as a result of these injuries whilst trying to recuperate on the Hospital Ship Maine, 21 June 1946. Lieutenant Commander Britton is buried in the Capuccini Naval Cemetery, at Kalkara. Southern Harbour, Malta. Sold with copied recommendations for both M.I.D.s and operation report for the strike on Emmahaven harbour.

Written four days before his assassination – ‘It has always been a mystery why the lunatic right suppose that I am one of them’ NEAVE AIREY: (1916-1979) British soldier and politician, the first British prisoner-of-war to succeed in escaping from Colditz Castle during World War II. Following the war Neave served with the International Military Tribunal at the Nuremberg Trials. The politician was assassinated in a car bomb attack at the House of Commons. T.L.S., Airey Neave, with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, 4to, House of Commons, London, 26th March 1979, to Donald McCormick. Neave thanks his correspondent for their letter and remarks 'Your book should be very fascinating. Like you, I am always being contacted by mysterious Colonels', further adding 'It has always been a mystery why the lunatic right suppose that I am one of them, but they have said similar things about a number of my colleagues who are moderate in every respect!'. A letter of good content. VG Donald McCormick (1911-1998) British journalist and historian who also wrote under the pseudonym Richard Deacon. As a journalist on the foreign desk of the Sunday Times McCormick worked alongside Ian Fleming at one stage.Neave's assassination at the hands of the Irish National Liberation Army, on 30th March 1979, came just two days after the vote of no confidence which brought down James Callaghan's government and a few weeks before the general election, which brought about a Conservative victory and saw Thatcher come to power as Great Britain's first female Prime Minister.

Wallis thanks his correspondent for their Christmas card and good wishes and continues 'My wife and I join in sending to you our very best wishes for a Happy New Year'. Penney was at the head of the British delegation working in the Manhattan Project, and had a leading role in the development of Britain´s nuclear programme, a clandestine programme which started in 1942 during WWII and which produced the first British atomic bomb in 1952. ‘Mrs. Thatcher herself was in favour of the reinstatement of capital punishment for terrorism’ NEAVE AIREY: (1916-1979) British soldier and politician, the first British prisoner-of-war to succeed in escaping from Colditz Castle during World War II. Following the war Neave served with the International Military Tribunal at the Nuremberg Trials. The politician was assassinated in a car bomb attack at the House of Commons. An interesting T.L.S., Airey Neave, with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, 4to, House of Commons, London, 17th December 1975, to Mr. A. Pancott, on the printed stationery of The Rt. Hon. Mrs. Margaret Thatcher, M.P. Neave replies at the request of Thatcher and informs his correspondent 'Mr. Ian Gilmour is the Shadow Home Secretary, and he spoke in the Debate on Capital Punishment as Mr. Jenkins' opposite number. As there was a Free Vote on Mr. Ivan Lawrence's motion, speeches represented the personal judgement of Members. Mrs. Thatcher herself was in favour of the reinstatement of capital punishment for terrorism', further remarking 'Mrs. Thatcher also asked me to thank you for your comments at the end of your letter, and assures you that she and other Conservative Members will do all they can to ensure strong opposition to the Socialist Government'. A letter of excellent content. A few small, minor staple holes and two light rust stains, VG Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013) British Prime Minister 1979-90. At the time of the present letter Thatcher was Leader of the Opposition (1975-79).  Airey Neave had agreed to be Thatcher's campaign manager as she successfully attempted to become leader of the Conservative Party. Neave became Head of her Private Office following her election as leader in February 1975. Neave's assassination at the hands of the Irish National Liberation Army came just two days after the vote of no confidence which brought down James Callaghan's government and a few weeks before the general election, which brought about a Conservative victory and saw Thatcher come to power as Great Britain's first female Prime Minister.

JERVIS JOHN: (1735-1823) 1st Earl of St. Vincent. British Admiral of the Fleet, a patron of Horatio Nelson. An excellent series of twenty-three A.Ls.S. and twenty-four Ls.S., J Jervis (4) and St. Vincent, 84 pages (total), 4to and folio, HMS Ville de Paris, off Cadiz, and Gibraltar, June 1797 - April 1799, to James Matra. The Admiral writes to His Majesty's Consul General at Tangier on various subjects, making several references to Nelson and Napoleon, and in some letters expressing typical bravado, in part -'You will very much benefit His Majs. Service and oblige me by sending a fast rowing boat to Gibraltar with the inclosed, the early delivery of it being of great importance to the King's service. I beg you will make my Compliments to Mrs. Matra & Miss Ainslio & tell them if they have the smallest curiosity to see the Fleet in the proud position it has taken I will send a Frigate for them, ignorant whether your instructions will permit you to be of the party I can only say I shall be glad to see you at all times……Should you be able to purchase a few ostrich feathers of the finest quality for me I shall be much obliged to you' (12th June 1797)'The Falucha named the Embark with your Passport escaped the vigilance of the advanced Squadron and got into Cadiz…..but had not the same good fortune coming out. I cannot entertain the smallest doubt of the vessel and cargo being Spanish…..yet from political motives and consideration of your character I have directed her to be carried into Tangier…..making the Spaniards who navigate her Prisoners of War' (20th June 1797)'Rear Admiral Nelson gave Don Joseph de Mazzarredo an alert on Monday night, three or four shells into Cadiz took two Bomb Vessels carrying each an 84 ½ inch Mortar & a Launch with the Commandant of the Flotilla who lost sixteen or eighteen men and was himself wounded before he surrendered. Another visit was intended last night, but a strong Northerly wind prevented its being carried into effect. LINDBERGH CHARLES: (1902-1974) American Aviator who made the first solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic from Paris to New York in the Spirit of St. Louis, May 1927. T.L.S., Charles, one page, 4to, n.p. (Darien, Connecticut), n.d. (February 1954), to Miss. Emily Davie. Lindbergh sends his correspondent some letters (no longer present) regarding a bomb inscription and asks 'How about using some quotes from William Ernest Hocking?', continuing 'They're pretty good - - I think he is top, in philosophy and otherwise - - Anne discovered him for me, as usual'. Lindbergh further states 'I see you have Whitehead's name in the outline, now. have (sic) you read his Adventure of Ideas? I think the first two or three and the last chapters are wonderful. The middle of the book is too much for me - - or at least it was the last time I attacked it, several years ago. I enclose a book (no longer present) Hocking gave me the last time I saw him. Please be very careful of this one. I went up to Cambridge to talk to Whitehead once, years and years ago. He was an extraordinary man'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Lindbergh. Some light age wear and creasing, otherwise VG Emily Davie (1915-1989) American author of Profile of America: An Autobiography of the U.S.A. 1993 Land Rover 110 2.5TDiMake: Land Rover Model: 110 TDYear: 1993Mileage: 56000VIN: SALLDHAF7KA927747Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: L819CFXTransmission: manualRegistered in October 1993, this is a genuine armoured police Land Rover Defender, although its current 'Police Bomb Disposal' appearance may be more down to it recently being owned by a TV and movie vehicle supply company. While little is known about the 110 2.5TDi's first few years, the Penman Engineering-converted vehicle was was acquired in 1996 by Birmingham-based rail consultancy firm Aegis Engineering. It stayed there until 2000 when it was purchased by South Yorkshire Police. There is a record of its time there, chronicling servicing, other maintenance, and safety checks, from 2000 to 2010, during which period the mileage went from 42,404 to 53,226 miles. Two former keepers are recorded, and there's a fresh MoT valid until February 2023. The paperwork file includes the V5C, plus MoT certificates from 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022. The current mileage is recorded as 56,824 miles, although this isn't warranted. The Land Rover, which is in generally good order throughout, comes with its police-fitted equipment such as side skirts, front bull bar, roof lamp and emergency lights still in place. It drives as it should, although, as an armoured Land Rover, it is a heavy vehicle to pilot.

Dambuster World War II Fl Sgt KW (Ken) Brown signed The Dambusters 617 Squadron Royal Air Force 44th Anniversary of the Dams Raid FDC PM Dambusters Memorial Woodhall Spa Lincs 17 May 1987. Kenneth William Brown was born on 20 August 1920 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1941 and was selected for pilot training. He was recommended for fighters but after arriving in England, he was posted to a bomber training unit in Kinloss. There he crewed up with navigator Dudley Heal, bomb aimer Stefan Oancia, wireless operator Herbert Hewstone and gunner Grant McDonald, all of whom would stay with him for much of the rest of his career. Their first active posting was however to Coastal Command, flying Whitleys out of RAF St Eval on Channel patrols. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
