A Green Hill Far Away multiple signed WW2 Robert Tomlin print. 32 x 18 inches. Numbered 535/850. On the morning of October 14th, 1943 along with 15 others from the 305th Bomb Group, Lazy Baby set off from Chelveston in England on Mission 115, the second Schweinfurt raid, later to become known as Black Thursday. By the time they reached Aachen on the outward leg only Lazy Baby and two others of the 305th were left flying. They were then seriously damaged and three crew severely injured while two bailed out. Diving from 23, 000 ft to only 3. 000 feet, pilot Ed Dienhart managed to escape the attacking fighters. With the ball turret gunner trapped and navigator seriously injured they proceeded at 30 to 50 feet hedge hopping all the way to Switzerland and safety. Guided by the navigator Don Rowley who, despite having both arms virtually severed, managed to steer them from memory for over an hour to Switzerland where they made a dramatic crash landing only four miles from the German border. The navigator died the following day from his injuries. While the pilot drew upon every ounce of his flying skills, the rest of the crew exhibited untold valour in the face of terrible adversity and selfless devotion to their stricken comrades. Signed by Artist and Lt. Edward Dienhart Pilot, 2nd Lt. Mighty Eighth Coming Home multiple signed WW2 Robert Taylor print. 33 x 25 inches. Numbered 13/1250. A Golden Anniversary edition commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Bomber Groups of the U.S. Eighth Air Force. From their first inauspicious raid on German airfields on 4th July 1942, to their ultimate air supremacy over the skies of Europe in 1945, the men of the U.S. Air Forces never wavered in their determination nor flinched from the frightening odds they faced. The vindication of their policy of high altitude daylight precision bombing came with the ultimate victory of the Allied forces in 1945. In three years of continual combat, the bomber crews of the USAAF overcame the worst odds: They often flew in atrocious weather, they ran the gauntlet of the Luftwaffe fighter Aces, and they pressed on through all the flak that anti-aircraft gunners could throw up at them. They paid the heavy price of war, but in so doing carved out a niche in history, and created a legend that will live so long as man takes to the skies. Commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the arrival in Europe of the men and machines of the Mighty Eighth. It evokes in a very special way the heroic deeds of the immortal men who flew the awesome combat missions of World War II and each provides a perpetual tribute to the debt owed to these intrepid aviators. Here the valiant bombers of the Eighth Air Force are coming home. Set in a majestic panorama of evening sunlight, a battle weary bomber force approaches the coast of Belgium. A B-17 Fortress sheds debris as it struggles to stay with the group, while three B-24 Liberators have joined the formation for the North Sea crossing. A lone P-51, low on fuel, flies close escort. Amazing autograph of the Artist and Robert MORGAN - He flew the legendary B-17 Memphis Belle on all 25 bombing missions to become the first B-17 in the 91st BG to complete the 'tour', Bob LANDRY - He has the distinction of being the only man in the 8th AF to command both a fighter and bomber group. As one of the 8th's commanders early in 1942, he achieved air victories flying P-47s against Fw190s while leading the 56th FG, and was Doolittle's Director of Fighters before taking over command of the 93rd and 493rd BGs. William LAWLEY - Flying a 305th BG B-17 on 20 Feb 1944, Lawley's co-pilot was killed in a head-on fighter attack. Injured in the face, weak and in shock, with 7 of his crew injured, Lawley flew his crew home, crash landing with only 1 engine. He was awarded the Medal of Honour Edward MICHAEL - Piloting a B-17 of the 305th BG on 11 April 1944, Michael and his co-pilot were badly injured in a frontal attack. With instruments wrecked and bomb doors jammed, he ordered 7 uninjured crew to bail out and flew the injured home in his severely damaged craft, crash landing in England. Michael was awarded the Medal of Honora for this action, Cliff PETERSON - Trained on B-17s but flew B-24s in combat in the E.T.O. with the 392nd BG, taking part in some of the historic raids of WWII - Bremen, Kiel, Gothe, and the first precision bombing raids on the V-1 rocket sites in Northern France. His B-24 was shot down in March 1944 and he became a POW. Albert SHOWER - The only Group Commander in the 8th AF to bring a Group to the UK and to command it until the end of hostilities. Condition report few tiny fox marks to borders and tiny crease marks to Rh edge. Very rare print. All autographs are genuine hand signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £4.99, EU from £6.99, Rest of World from £8.99.

On the night of 1st–2nd July, 1915, when it was essential that a portion of a trench which had been lost should be regained, Captain O'Sullivan, although not belonging to the troops at this point volunteered to lead a party of bomb throwers to effect the recapture. He advanced in the open under a very heavy fire and in order to throw his bombs with greater effect, got up on the parapet, where he was completely exposed to the fire of the enemy occupying the trench. Gerard Dillon (1916-1971)Moonstruck YouthOil on board, 29.3 x 25cm (11½ x 9¾'')SignedProvenance: Waddington Galleries, Dublin; Associated American Artists; Sale, Sotheby's London, 11 May 2006, lot 90, where purchased by the present owner. With the outbreak of the Second World War, a number of countries including the Republic of Ireland declared neutrality. The arrival of returning Irish artists and refugee painters Basil Rákóczi and Kenneth Hall, the prime movers of the White Stag Group from London resulted in a distinctly bohemian and avant-garde art scene in Dublin. In 1941, Belfast born, Gerard Dillon moved to Dublin presenting watercolours to Dublin dealer, Victor Waddington who supported progressive artists in his South Anne Street gallery. Dillon became friends with Basil Rakóczi whose scenes from Aran in the early 1940’s may have influenced his decision to visit the Islands a few years later. Although Dillon’s naïve images were not popular with critics or the buying public in the 1940’s, Victor Waddington would have heeded the actions of Mainie Jellett, who championed Dillon, opening his first solo exhibition in The Country Shop in Dublin in 1942. Between 1944-1945 Dillon traveled to Aran, where he made numerous sketches which he later transferred to oil paintings following his return to London to repair bomb-damaged buildings after the War. The idealized images of the Islands were in response to his upbringing in an industrial city and working life in London. One of his Aran pictures was included in the group ‘Living Art Exhibition’ in Cecil Phillips’s Leicester Gallery in London in 1946 where the President of the Associated American Artists (AAA), Reeves Levental viewed the exhibition. Impressed with the show, Levental decided the AAA should sponsor the first postwar American show of Irish art, ‘Contemporary Irish Painting’ in New York in March 1947. Although ‘Moonstruck Youth’ is not listed in the catalogue, the AAA label attached to the work suggests it was included in one of the exhibitions that travelled to Chicago, Ottawa or the new AAA gallery in Beverly Hills, California, later in 1947-8. Dillon made a note in his record book that this work, No. 18. Moonstruck Youth was “sold” in a list of pictures belonging to the artist at Waddington Galleries in 1946-7.Moonstruck Youth depicts a moonlit scene with a barefoot youth staring out at the viewer. The title of the painting and the youth’s pose reveal’s the sitter’s view of Dillon as a stranger on Aran. Despite the sitter’s shy demeanor, Islanders learned from a young age to be hardy, remote in thought and feeling and above all, independent and self-reliant. The proximity of the sea to the cottages points to how people on Aran relied on the sea for food. The lone male figure is depicted in traditional dress style of the Aran Islands; wearing wide-legged homespun patched trousers ending well above the ankle and were usually worn with oiled wool jerseys. The bulky Jerseys, known today as the ‘Aran Sweater’, were knitted by women in the family with undyed homespun wool to help their husbands or sons weather the often-treacherous sea conditions near the Islands. Folklore stories record that individual families had their own distinct raised decorative stitch which also had its own meaning, and the islanders could identify a fisherman by this stitch in fishing accidents. Over the jersey, the young man is wearing a waistcoat, also known as a bainín jacket, or short coat of light, undyed homespun flannel without collar or pockets. The absence of a currach and shoes on the youth’s feet suggest the end of the day. The youth would have moved his light primitive vessel to safety while the sitter’s rawhide shoes would be soaking in water in the nearby cottage for fishing the following day. Known as “Pampouties”, the rawhide shoes prevent slipping in currachs when out at sea. Footwear had a lifespan of about a month and required soaking in water to keep them supple. The youth’s woven belt, known as a crios were made from coloured wools woven without a loom. On one of his visits to Aran, Dillon wrote to a friend in London describing the ‘most glorious holiday.’ Living among Irish speakers, he felt he was living in a foreign country and commented on the men and women’s strange ‘mode of dress.’ The holiday was a ‘change away from the world, complete and absolute peace, living a very natural primitive life from day to day, not knowing what day of the week it is, hearing no news except a scrap when the boat arrived from Galway once a week…I painted life on Inishmore and had there the good luck to sell two watercolours to visitors to the island.’ Karen Reihill, November 2019

Lot 62

Dambuster 617 Squadron Jim Clay DFC two page hand written letter dated 22. 6. 91 really interesting letter containing various insights to various mission and other crew members such as Les Munro. Clay was in fact in operation before the rest of his crewmates, having been allocated to the crew of another Canadian pilot, George Lancey, for the famous daylight raid on the Le Creusot works on 17 October 1942. This, however, resulted in an early return with engine trouble. The Cuelenaere crew were in action together ten days later, and began a run of almost 30 operations together which ended in March 1943, when their pilot reached the end of his tour. This coincided with the call for volunteers for the new 617 Squadron, which Les Munro and most of his crew decided to accept. However, as they were short of a bomb aimer, Clay volunteered to go with them. Clay settled in with his new crew and was in front row position on the Dams Raid when AJ-W was hit by flak while crossing the Dutch coast. He maintained that the damage came from a flak ship, disagreeing with Bill Howarth and Les Munro who both thought it came from a land-based installation. From Jim Shortland Dambuster 617 Sqn Historian collection. Good condition Est.
