Robert Fitzmaurice (British, b.1960). 'Joker (et in Arcadia Ego)'. Acrylic on aluminium, unsigned with artists label verso. 28.2 x 12.1cm. My art involves figuration and abstraction to question ideas of power, gender roles & identity. The figures I create comply with pictorial rather than anatomical truth and represent archetypes rather than individual characters. The frontality of the figure and the shallow theatrical space in which it operates reflect my interest in the expressive shorthand that is found in votive art of all cultures. These factors contribute to a highly personalised pictorial language that despite being tethered to past traditions serves to destabilise meaning. Only the art of the past could use the human figure to personify a concept that was singular and undisputed. Today the relationships between a motif, meaning and its audience are in constant flux. By working with the formal potency of these compromised systems I arrive at visual statements where meaning is deferred to the viewer. This tension, between certainty and flux, provides me with a conceptual framework to process contemporary issues and site specific, socio-political histories. The exhibitions ‘Soldier’ (2018) and ‘No Eden’ (2019) both considered histories of conflict. ‘No Eden’ was held at the former USAF base at Greenham Common Control Tower and my research into the peace camps of the 1980s exposed me to the gendered power dynamics of militarism and feminism. These bodies of work considered ideas of the hero, the warrior, the childish man, and of the boy as both victim and perpetrator, as exemplified by ‘Little Boy’ the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Since then I have continued to make work that presents the male child as a problematic agent, suggesting innocence and hope for the future but also the potential for aggression. Alongside this body of work I am developing a new series of monochrome paintings where repeating figures are placed on a grid a specific number of times. The significance of this number is derived from the subject contained in the title. After adjusting the tone and contour of each these elements a larger figure, related to the smaller versions, take shape. These works embrace broader themes of identity, individualism and community. They also reflect my growing interest in contemporary discourse around the indexicality of painting and concepts of difference and repetition. www.fitzmaurice.works. Offered from the National Motorcycle Museum Collection 1928 Sunbeam 493cc T.T. Model 90 Racing MotorcycleRegistration no. OX 5193Frame no. E1015Engine no. N2017•One owner from 1983 to 2002•Belonging to the National Motorcycle Museum since 2002•Restored by the NMMThis T.T. Model 90 comes with an old-style continuation logbook (issued 1949) recording two owners: R Shelton and Peter Woodward, the second of whom acquired the machine in November 1983 and is listed as previous keeper on the accompanying V5C document. Writing in the Marston Sunbeam OC magazine of summer 2017, Peter Woodward says: 'The Sunbeam showroom at 194 Broad Street, Birmingham displayed the bike for sale in June 1928; an unknown gentleman used it to race at Pendine Sands during the summer and he returned the bike to the showroom for resale afterwards. '... the CT close-ratio gearbox, without kick-start or components; the kick-start hole in the gearbox was blanked off with a genuine plug, this was slightly domed and plated in nickel. The Binks three-jet carburettor for performance and the WM2 21' front wheel are how it left the factory ready for racing at Pendine.'The second owner, Mr Bate, was employed as works managers at R T Shelley, the engineering company that bailed out Norton Motorcycles when it became bankrupt. The third owner, Mr Shelton, worked at the Sunbeam Elms factory as a fitter, where they serviced and overhauled customers' bikes. He rode the Model 90 during the war years, and one night he ran into a bomb crater in the dark, which seriously damaged the frame.'The Model 90 was then stored in a bedroom for many years until eventually the house was condemned and the Sunbeam offered for sale at a Phillips auction in London, where Peter Woodward bought it. Peter then restored the machine to his usual exemplary standard, fitting a kick-start-equipped BT gearbox for convenience, and in December 2002 sold it to the National Motorcycle Museum. The Sunbeam has since been restored by the National Motorcycle Museum, as commemorated by the attached silver plaque. Accompanying documentation consists of a V5C Registration certificate and the aforementioned continuation logbook. The Classic Motor Cycle's editor James Robinson wrote a lengthy article for the magazine's January 2018 edition about his experiences riding 'OX 5193' (copy article available). James much enjoyed the Sunbeam: 'Thing is, one really doesn't want much more performance, as it's already so quick compared to (almost) anything from its period, plus most motorcycles 30 years newer. Cruising at 55-60mph is absolutely effortless...' A carburettor in need of adjustment/tuning was the only niggle of note. The machine's present mechanical condition is not known; accordingly, prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to its condition, completeness, correctness, or otherwise prior to bidding.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

CHADWICK JAMES: (1891-1974) English Physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1935, in recognition of his discovery of the neutron. Chadwick was head of the British team who worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II. A good and lengthy A.L.S., James Chadwick, four pages, 4to, Cambridge, 13th November 1969, on is printed stationery, to Leslie R. Groves Jr. Chadwick informs Groves on Mrs Gowing visit, stating in part `We had a visit from Mrs Gowing a few days ago. She came to collect a draft of her account of the first few years after the war - an enormous volume of material…It depressed me to read about it. Mrs Gowing hopes to have a draft of her second volume completed by Easter. This will then have to be submitted to some high authorities who may, and probably will, demand that some references to political discussions should be cut out…Provided that she has sufficient time and energy to digest all the material she has collected, I believe that the second volume will be quite interesting.´ Chadwick further refers to a Canadian nuclear work, saying `I read about half of "Canada´s Nuclear Story" and then gave up. I found two quotations from notes by John Cockcroft, one is quite untrue, the second gives a false implication. And now recently, in reading Mrs. Gowing´s draft…I found references to at least two complaints of the Canadian team about which I never heard. If these complaints were valid they should have been made to me and to you.´ And referring to the Canadian nuclear team, Chadwick concludes `They do not seem to have realized how fortunate they were.´ Folded, with very small, minor creasing, otherwise VG Leslie Groves (1896-1970) United States Army Corps of Engineers Lieutenant General. Groves oversaw the construction of the Pentagon and directed the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb during WWII.Margaret Gowing (1921-1998) English Historian who helped to produce several volumes of the officially sponsored history of WWII. Known for her books commissioned by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, about the early history of Britain´s atomic weapons program. When she asked Chadwick what he intended to do with the wooden filing cabinets in his attic, and he replied "Burn them", she helped to establish the Centre for Scientific archives in 1972 to house such resources.Wilfrid Eggleston published in 1965 "Canada´s Nuclear Story".John Cockcroft (1897-1967) British Physicist. [GROVES LESLIE]: (1896-1970) United States Army Corps of Engineers Lieutenant General. Groves oversaw the construction of the Pentagon and directed the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb during WWII. A very interesting content T.L.S., `Sherfield´, one page, 4to, London, 26th November 1968, sent to Groves by Roger Mellor Makins, 1st Baron Sherfield (1904-1996) British Diplomat who served as British Ambassador to the United States 1953-56. Baron Sherfield reassures Leslie Groves on qualifications of new British Ambassador to the United States, stating in part `It is perfectly true that he made his name as a television interviewer, that he was a left-wing socialist, and that he edited the left-wing periodical "The New Statesman". But he was also a competent and successful Junior Minister in the Atlee Government. Since 1964, he has occupied the very demanding post of High Commissioner in India with ability and distinction.´, further adding `I consider that he has the qualities to make a good British Ambassador in Washington. There are very few people whose past sayings or writings will stand up to really close scrutiny, and this applies particularly to a journalist or editor. I am sure that the new president is a big enough man to understand this..´ Folded. EXMajor John Freeman (1915-2014) British Politician, Diplomat and Broadcaster. High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to India 1965-68. He was appointed British Ambassador to the United States 1969-71 under British Prime Minister Harold Wilson tenure. Freeman had refer to Nixon as "A discredited and outmoded purveyor of the irrational and inactive" whose defeat for the Republican nomination would be a "victory for decency".

Stannard) was sent by the Admiralty as part of the 15th Anti Submarine Striking Force and had the task of sweeping the fjords for enemy submarines and to land supplies at the small fishing port of Namsos. On 28th April 1940 when enemy bombing attacks had set on fire many tons of ammunition and stores on the wharf, Lt.Stannard ran Arab’s bows against the wharf and held her there. Sending all but two of his crew aft, he endeavoured for two hours to extinguish the fire with hoses from the forecastle, he persisted in this work till the attempt had to be given up as hopeless. Stannard later received orders to evacuate French troops from a landing stage at 23.59 hours and transfer them to a troop-ship which was completed at 03.30.Following this Arab made for a small bay. In the vicinity were two sister trawlers, HMS Gaul and Aston-Villa. On 3rd May HMS Gaul received a direct hit and was sinking, her crew making for the shore. Stannard placed Arab under shelter of a cliff, landed his crew and with those of the other vessels established a camp, where they were frequently attacked. When the trawler HMS Aston Villa was hit Stannard, with two others, boarded Arab and moved her out of danger. On leaving the fjord on 2nd May Arab was attacked by a German Heinkel 115 bomber which ordered them to steer east or be sunk. Stannard held his course and, when the aircraft made her final run in to bomb the trawler, Arab’s Oerlikon gun brought the plane down. Throughout the five day action Arab was subjected to 31 bombing attacks. Lt Stannard then brought Arab back to Scapa arriving on 6th May and on 16th August was awarded the VC, and Newman his DSM.

RAF Canberra Bomb release mechanism release no3 manually operated Serial no VAC 1409R. The English Electric Canberra is a British first generation jet powered medium bomber. It was developed by English Electric during the mid to late 1940s in response to a 1944 Air Ministry requirement for a successor to the wartime de Havilland Mosquito fast bomber. Among the performance requirements for the type was the demand for an outstanding high altitude bombing capability and high speed. These were partly accomplished by making use of newly developed jet propulsion technology. When the Canberra was introduced to service with the Royal Air Force (RAF), the types first operator, in May 1951, it became the services first jet powered bomber. Good Condition. Lot 26

Dambuster relic, Large piece of the gear box from the Lancaster of John Vere Hopgood, DFC & Bar, which was shot down in the Dambuster Raid. Fixed to a wooden plinth and given to our vendor Jim Shortland 617 Sqn historian by Bill Townsend. Gibson selected Hopgood as his deputy for the attack against the Mohne Dam. While awaiting take off Hopgood spoke with Dave Shannon, telling him that he had had a premonition that he would not survive the mission. Gibson responded to the premonition with, Hoppy, tonights the night; tomorrow we will get drunk. Hopgood took off in the first group alongside Gibson and Mick Martin. It was on the journey to the Mohne that Hopgoods aircraft AJ M (M Mother) was hit by flak while passing the airfield at Dulmen. Hopgood along with gunners George Gregory and Tony Burcher were injured but they continued the attack. There is a possibility that Gregory was killed by flak at this point. The damaged aircraft reached the dam where they attacked at 00:32, ten minutes after Gibson. However, they were struck again by anti-aircraft fire and their bomb was released too late. It bounced over the dam and exploded on a power station on the other side. The aircraft was fatally damaged at this point and Hopgood remained at the controls, gaining height to allow his crew to bail out. Rear gunner, Pilot Officer Tony Burcher, remembered hearing Hopgood say; Get out you damn fool. If only I could get another 300 ft. I can't get any more height. John Fraser, John Minchin and Tony Burcher jumped, but the already injured Minchin did not survive. However, Fraser and Burcher survived and were made prisoners of war. AJ M crashed in a field near Ostonnen, 6 kilometres (3. 72 miles) from the dam. The bodies of Hopgood, Brennan, Navigator Kenneth (Ken) Earnshaw from Bridlington and Gregory were found inside. Good Condition. All autographs are genuine hand signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £4.99, EU from £6.99, Rest of World from £8.99.
