WW2 JG 400 Me-163 Komet multiple signed print. Signed by artist by Mike Machat and WW2 Luftwaffe fighter aces Wolfgang Spate and Rudolf Opitz. World War II saw airpower come of age…the predictions of Mitchel, Douhet and Trenchard came true. Their theories were tested…some were proven correct and some flawed. One theory which held that great fleets of bombers would devastate enemy homelands was proving true. To counter the fleets of bombers, German technology responded with truly revolutionary designs. One was the Me-163 “Komet” rocket powered interceptor. Komet pilots literally rode a bomb as their unit emblem depicts. The Me-163 had only minutes of highly volatile fuel with which to streak to altitude, attack incoming bombers, and then glide to a landing on a skid. Jagdgeschwader 400, the only unit to become operational in the Me-163, was commanded by a combat veteran with 99 victories on the eastern front…Wolfgang Spate. He would not only command the unit…he flew the first combat mission in the aircraft. With him in JG 400 was Rudolf Opitz, who first saw combat in the famous glider assault on Fort Eben Emael in Belgium during the initial attack on the western front. Opitz was next assigned to “Project X” and soon became the chief test pilot in the development of the Komet. Although the Me-163 came too late to stop the bomber assault on Germany, it provided technology that today can be seen in the space shuttle - a craft, which also streaks to altitude and then glides unpowered back to earth. RAF Scampton. 1940-43. Autograph Album. 19cm wide x 13cm tall. Green cloth. Over 250 signatures. Worthy of research as this will contain scarce signatures. The British Newspaper Archive mentions all of the variety acts listed in this album (details published in the Lincolnshire Echo). A quick look: a. Full of RAF Gang Show inscriptions (probably the best WW2 collection of Gang Show signatures in one album). Includes: i. Squadron Leader William Henry Ralph Reader. Through the pre-war Gang Shows, Reader became friends with Air Commodore Archibald Boyle, the deputy director of RAF Intelligence. The German Ambassador, Joachim von Ribbentrop, attended the 1938 London Gang Show and invited Reader to visit the Hitler Youth Movement in Germany. Boyle persuaded Reader to become an Intelligence Officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve with the rank of Flight Lieutenant, although the diplomatic situation had deteriorated before he could take up von Ribbentrop's invitation. On the outbreak of war, Boyle sent Reader to France for undercover work, in the guise of running a concert party, for which some former Gang Show members were recruited into the RAF. The show was entitled Ralph Reader and Ten Blokes from the Gang Show and, besides allowing Reader to complete intelligence tasks, had a positive effect on morale. On returning to England, Reader was ordered to expand the Gang Shows, while his visits to RAF stations allowed Reader to monitor subversive propaganda which was a concern of the RAF high command. Reader eventually raised twenty-four RAF Gang Show units and two female WAAF units with a total establishment of nearly four hundred serving personnel. The RAF Gang Shows toured nearly every theatre of war, from Iceland to Burma. By 1944, Gang Show units were estimated to have travelled 100, 000 miles and entertained 3, 500, 000 servicemen. Some of those who served in the RAF Gang Shows would later become well known entertainers, such as Peter Sellers, Tony Hancock, Dick Emery and Cardew Robinson. For his services to the RAF, he was awarded an MBE (Military Division) in 1943. https://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Ralph_Reader for more detail. ii. Murray Browne, Assistant to Ralph Reader; later Musical Director; later Chairman of the Gang Show committee. Died 1992 aged 84. iii. Douglas (Cardew) Robinson. Joining the RAF in 1939, AC2 Douglas Robinson found himself stationed at Uxbridge, where he quickly found a place in the camp shows. It was in 1941 that Squadron Leader Ralph Reader, arrived at RAF Uxbridge to put on a performance. Robinson seized his chance, did a working audition, and soon found himself posted to RAF Gang Show Unit Number Five. His pre-war experience now came in handy, and he was promoted to Flight-Sergeant and put in charge of the unit. They played at RAF camps all over the country, and when the 'second front' was opened up in Normandy, Unit 5 followed, eventually touring through Belgium and Holland giving concert-party entertainments on the tail-flap of their lorry. A tour of the Far East followed, including a sudden detour when the first atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. https://www. independent. co. uk/news/people/obituary-cardew-robinson-1565861. html for his detailed obituary. b. He picked him up and carried him back under a hail of bombs.’ Frederick William Dare Sorby was born in Todwick, Yorkshire, on 13 April 1889, and having emigrated to Canada attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Edmonton on 4 January 1915, having previously served for three years in the 101st Edmonton Fusiliers. An original Royal Air Force Pilot’s Flying Log Book appertaining to Flight Lieutenant R. H. Orlebar, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who saw much action in Spitfires with 145 Squadron during the Italian Campaign in 1944, covering the period July 1941 to August 1957: extremely well annotated and together with numerous assorted inserts and a quantity of additional ephemera including photographs, letters, cards, medical reports, newspaper cuttings, the spine a little frayed; covers and contents in good condition £200-£300 --- Rupert Hale Orlebar was born in 1920 at Steyning Sussex and joined the Royal Air Force in November 1940. He commenced his pilot training in July 1941 in Texas, U.S.A., and, having been commissioned Pilot Officer on 6 December 1941, was selected to continue training on Spitfires at No. 53 O.T.U., based at Llandow, Vale of Glamorgan from March 1942. The following month Orlebar was involved in a mid-air collision at 1000ft. His log book noting ‘undignified descent on golf-course - 4 months in hospital after collision - most awkward.’ Upon recovery, he completed his training and went operational at No. 504 Squadron, Ibsley, on 29 January 1943. Flying the Spifire Mark V he partook in a variety of sorties over the next six months, his logbook noting, inter alia, sweeps over France, convoy patrols and a shipping strike on barges. On 3 May he states ‘Escort to 12 Venturas to Amsterdam docks. Attacked off Dutch coast by 190s. Phew!!!’ After a posting to R.A.F. Setif in North Africa in July 1943 he received promotion to Flight Lieutenant in December and then joined No. 145 Squadron flying the Spitfire Mark VIII ‘a lovely aircraft...oceans of power’ in Italy on the front line of the Italian Campaign in March 1944. Here Orlebar’s logbook takes on a diary like form, often containing lengthy paragraphs to describe the day’s events and usually including details of kills and incidents relating also to other pilots in the squadron. His first month in Italy consists of sweep patrols over the Anzio Invasion and Cassino Battle Areas with much action and a forced landing due to engine failure at Lago being noted early on. Involved in a kill on 24 March 1944, Orlebar’s log book entry - not atypical - reads: ‘24 March 1944 - Sweep-Patrol Cassino Battle Area. Blooded! Jimmy Minto, Mac McDonald, and ‘Blackie’ each got a destroyed this morning! Terrific show. Took off 15.45hrs in Green section, Hughie Wells leading 2/10 cloud, very good visibility. We were bottom section of 4, at 12000 ft. 2 stray huns cam down - Jock Sterling destroyed one - a 109. Jock Sutherland, Tommy Thomp and Hughie Wells shared the other - I had a shot at it from about 300 yards giving 3 rings deflection - didn’t see the strikes, but it started smoking and crashed. Pilot baled out.’ After a six week course at the Advanced Bombing and Gunnery School at El-Ballah, Egypt, Orlebar returned to Italy to rejoin 145 Squadron, now a fighter-bomber squadron, at Lago, Italy on 27 May and proceeded over the remainder of the year to undertake a variety of sorties including bombing rail targets and gun positions, bomber escort, bombline patrol, scrambles, fighter sweeps, armed reconnaissance and strafing. Detailed logbook entries continue to describe each day’s activities, e.g.: ‘29 March - Sweep Patrol Anzio Invasion Area. W/O Jerry McCully (Canada) destroyed a long nosed 190, and F/O ‘Brook’ Harrington got a probable and a damaged (long-nosed 190s) this morning before breakfast off Anzio these were both later confirmed as ‘destroyed’ by ships - very fine.’ ‘3 April - Sweep Patrol Anzio Invasion Area. Good weather and thin layers of cloud 5/10 - Bandits reported north of Frosinone - Blue Section saw their smoke trails - Jock Sutherland and Tommy Thompson closed to engage them, two short nosed 190s - they were at 20000 ft, the huns at 22000. Enemy aircraft dived steeply - Tommy followed his and shot him down ‘on the deck’ - Jock lost his - I was yellow 2 to Hughie Wells. ‘2 August - Bombing Road-Rail junction and strafing goods train on Bologna-Pesaro R/R - Weather good but towering masses of cumulus up to 14000 ft south of Bologna and over the hills. C.O.’s bomb failed to release on his bombing dive, coming off and exploding underneath him when he was strafing, blowing a hole in his wing. I was only a hundred yards behind him! - My bomb also hung up and was eventually jettisoned. Strafed train but it was empty and would not burn - no flak.’ Orlebar’s wartime operations tail off sharply after 21 November 1944. Aside from a series of internal flights in Italy in the summer of 1945 and a single solo flight in a Messerchmidt 108 in 1946, the only further entries in the logbook are local flights in light trainers in 1957.

A Second War ‘Immediate’ D.F.M. group of six awarded to Flight Lieutenant Jack Edwards, 142 Squadron, Royal Air Force Distinguished Flying Medal, G.VI.R. (1317475 Sgt. J. Edwards. R.A.F.); 1939-45 Star; Air Crew Europe Star, 1 clasp, France and Germany; Africa Star, 1 clasp, North Africa 1942-43; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, with M.I.D. oak leaf, good very fine and better (6) £2,400-£2,800 --- D.F.M. London Gazette 19 March 1943: ‘Edwards, Jack. 1317475 Sergeant, No. 142 Squadron (Immediate). Joint citation with Sqn. Ldr. James Frederick Henry Booth (37958), No. 142 Squadron (Awarded Immediate D.F.C.); and 911963 L.A.C. James Arthur Skingsley, No. 142 Squadron (Awarded Immediate D.F.C.): ‘One night in January 1943, Squadron Leader Booth, Sergeant Edwards and Leading Aircraftman Skingsley were captain, bomb aimer and acting flight engineer respectively of an aircraft which attacked the docks at Bizerta. Shortly after its bombs were released the aircraft was subjected to a series of attacks by an enemy fighter, sustaining much damage before the attacker was driven off. The starboard engine was hit and burst into flames, the hydraulic system rendered useless and the rear turret and other equipment damaged; in addition, a portable oxygen bottle was set on fire. The aircraft began to lose height and the situation appeared hopeless. The captain ordered his crew to prepare to abandon aircraft. Leading Aircraftman Skingsley, ignoring his parachute pack, however, attempted to extinguish the flames from the oxygen bottle. Sergeant Edwards came to his assistance and together they grasped the blazing bottle with their bare hands, carried it to the escape hatch and hurled it out. The fire in the engine and in the main plane subsided and Squadron Leader Booth decided to attempt to fly the bomber home. All moveable equipment, including guns and ammunition, was jettisoned in an effort to maintain height. Although the aircraft was difficult to control, Squadron Leader Booth succeeded in flying it to base where he made a successful crash-landing in the face of extremely harassing circumstances. These members of aircraft crew displayed courage and devotion to duty in keeping with the highest traditions of the Royal Air Force.’ The original recommendation for Edwards’ Immediate D.F.M. adds a little more detail: ‘Sergeant Edwards was the Bomb Aimer of the crew detailed to attack Bizerta docks on the night of 18th January, 1943. After dropping their bombs, they were attacked by a Ju.88 night fighter. After the fourth attack, the starboard engine was on fire, the rear turret knocked out, airspeed indicator and flaps damaged and the portable oxygen bottle amidships on fire. The machine also began to lose height rapidly. Despite this Sergeant Edwards very gallantly stayed in his turret until ordered by the Captain to take up position for bailing out. On leaving the turret, he immediately went to the fire amidships and with complete disregard for his personal safety and ignoring his parachute pack, he proceeded to help put out the blazing oxygen bottle, getting his hands severely burnt. He also assisted the Flight Engineer to lighten the aircraft by jettisoning all the removable equipment. By his prompt action, Sergeant Edwards undoubtedly helped his Captain to save the crew and aircraft. Sergeant Edwards has completed 23 successful sorties and his devotion to duty at all times has been outstanding and an example to his comrades in the squadron. Very strongly recommended for an immediate award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.’ M.I.D. London Gazette 8 June 1944. Jack Edwards was born at Pontyridd on 18 May 1909, and was employed prior to the outbreak of war in 1939 by the South Wales Power Company as an assistant electrical storeman. Joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Leading Aircraftman, he in due course became a Sergeant-Observer and was posted to No. 142 Squadron at Blida, Algeria. He was awarded the D.F.M. for his gallantry on the night of 18 January 1943, when his Wellington III bomber attacked by a Ju.88 after a successful bombing raid on Bizerta docks. The Rear Gunner successfully baled out but the remaining crew, after the exertions described above, made a successful crash landing at base; their aircraft was written off. Edwards returned home on leave in May 1943 and on 13 September he was commissioned as Pilot Officer (on probation). He was decorated with the D.F.M. at an investiture at Buckingham Palace, accompanied by his wife Bessie, on 12 October 1943. On 13 March 1944, his appointment as Pilot Officer on probation was confirmed and he was promoted to Flying Officer (War Substantive). He was promoted to Flight Lieutenant (War Substantive) on 13 September 1945, and finally relinquished his commission on 18 May 1954. Flight Lieutenant Jack Edwards died at Swansea in 1971, aged 63, his death being registered in the 3rd quarter of the year. Sold together with original Observer’s cloth wing and ribbon bar for D.F.M.; an original wartime copy of Blida’s Bombers by Squadron Leader Eric M. BICKERTON RICHARD: (1759-1832) British Admiral, served as Second-in Command to Lord Nelson, 1804. An interesting L.S., R Bickerton, one page, folio, on board HMS Swiftsure, Bay of Aboukir, 21st March 1801, to the Masters of HMS Europa, Diadem and Regulus. Bickerton states that it has been brought to his attention by Captain Thomas Hand of the bomb vessel HMS Tartarus that 'there is a quantity of Bread on board the said Vessel in a mouldy state, and unfit for men to eat, and requesting a survey thereon', further instructing his correspondents to board the Tartarus and 'strictly and carefully survey the Bread complained of, but on no account condemn any part thereof unless totally unfit for use, as the difficulty in procuring supplies and the high price of every species of victualling renders it necessary to practise the utmost economy in the expenditure, such part of the said Bread however as appears in the state represented and a nuisance in the ship you are to see thrown over board into the sea'. To the verso appears the manuscript report individually signed by the three Masters of the vessels, given on board HMS Tartarus, 22nd March 1801, and stating, in part, 'Bread - Four hundred and thirty five Pounds, mouldy, maggoty, rotten, and unfit for men to eat, occasioned, in our opinions, from its having been wet with salt water, and it appearing to be a nuisance in the ship, we have seen the same thrown over board into the sea…..And we do further declare that we have made and taken this survey with such care, and equity, that if required we are ready to make oath to the impartiality of our proceedings'. Some light age wear and minor staining and a few small, neat splits at the edges, otherwise about VG The present letter was written and signed shortly after the British victory in the Battle of Abukir on 8th March 1801. The landing of the British expeditionary force was made with the intention of defeating and driving out the estimated 21,000 troops remaining from Napoleon's ill-fated invasion of Egypt. Each of the five ships HMS Swiftsure, Europa, Diadem, Regulus and Tartarus were involved in the British navy's Egyptian campaign from March to September 1801, resulting in their officers and crew being eligible for the clasp “Egypt” to the Navy General Service Medal which the Admiralty issued in 1847 to all surviving claimants.
