This german paratrooper smock was found in the Belgian Ardennes, but unfortunately, the exact discovery site was not recorded at the time. Condition II+.

Etat II+. Exceptional Waffen-SS Paratrooper Smock. Made of camouflage pea-dot fabric. All buttons are present and in their original color. The collar pockets are intact, with the flaps having been resewn, likely a period repair. The hip pockets also have their flaps resewn, probably a period modification. All press studs are functional. The sleeve lining is made of gray satinette. The elastic bands are stretched out. The back pocket for a flare pistol is complete. The colors are partially faded from sun exposure. The pocket linings are made of Feldgrau fabric. One lining is heavily damaged with some missing parts. The interior is lined with Feldgrau cotton fabric. The drawstrings are present. No visible markings. This piece was recovered in Bastogne after the fighting. It was on display for many years in the Bastogne War Museum and was reproduced in Werner Palinckx s work on camouflage gear. Photos of this smock in the museum’s display cases are available. A copy of Werner Palinckx s book is included. This exceptional uniform piece comes from the famous 600th Battalion of the Waffen-SS, which replaced the original 500th Battalion, the only airborne unit within this branch. Created specifically for anti-partisan operations, elements of the 600th Battalion participated in the infamous Greif Operation led by Otto Skorzeny during the Battle of the Bulge. This operation, which aimed to capture bridges over the Meuse intact, also sought to sow confusion in the ranks of the American Army by dressing some of the unit’s members as US soldiers to provide false intelligence and misinformation. Though it ultimately failed, it caused significant confusion among the Allies. Some members of the 600th Battalion took part in this operation. Only 1,000 men formed this battalion, making its uniform pieces of extreme rarity. This historical piece is of the utmost importance, illustrated in a reference book, and was displayed for many years in the official Bastogne Museum. Given its battlefield provenance, it can be assumed that this smock was worn by members of the unit who participated in the Greif Operation, one of the most well-known German commando operations of World War II, orchestrated by one of its most iconic officers, Otto Skorzeny. The Greif Operation is undoubtedly one of the most significant moments of the Battle of the Bulge. Note some wear and patina on the item, along with a few stains and snags. Condition, II+.

Lot 36

Very vivid colors on the summer and autumn side. One elastic on the right sleeve is stretched, while the elastics on the left sleeve and waist are in perfect condition. A white strip on the back of the piece indicates a printing defect. The pocket linings are made of Feldgrau canvas. There is a repair on the front of the smock. This uniform piece is iconic of the Waffen-SS units and was worn notably during the Battle of the Bulge. The same courtyard featured in a number of Langley's works including a large oil painting of 1898 A Cousin from Town and a watercolour from 1901 Local Critics.
