Sorties 22, Flying hours 117.20. Wireless Operator. Air2/9157.Sergeant Wilson has completed 22 night bombing sorties as Wireless Operator. These sorties include attacks on Berlin and many other heavily defended targets. Throughout his tour, Sergeant Wilson has been conspicuous for his operational efficiency, his coolness in the face of danger and his reliability both on the ground and in the air. A first class crew member, his first operation in a Wellington ended, through no fault of his own, ina bad crash. On his seventh operation, returning from Berlin on 22nd November, 1943, the Stirling in which he was flying was forced to land in the North Sea. The fact that all those who survived the actual crash in the sea were eventually picked up after 15 hours in their dinghy was entirely due to Sergeant Wilson's efficient execution of the ditching wireless procedure. On his 21st Operation, the Lancaster in which he was flying was hit by anti-aircraft fire while en route to Le Mans. A piece of shrapnel hit him on the head and knocked him unconscious. Five minutes later, he was back at his job and carried on faultlessly for the rest of the sortie. On his 22nd operation, the aircraft encountered severe icing conditions in cloud over this country and Sergeant Wilson, with the rest of the crew, was ordered to abandon the aircraft. At the end of his parachute descent, he landed in some trees and telegraph wires and broke his ankle. Sergeant Wilson is recommended for the aware of the D.F.M. 5th June 1944.Remarks by Station Commander:Throughout his operational tour, Sergeant Wilson has displayed a whole-hearted devotion to duty and at all times a most courageous disregard for personal injury or danger. I strongly recommend the award of the D.F.M.Remarks by Base Commander:Recommended. Despite the severe ordeals he has had to face, Sergeant Wilson has consistently shown unfailing courage and devotion to duty of a very high order. The Goldfish card is plastic covered but stuck to the backing and unable to remove without possibly damaging it.Telegrams are also stuck to backing, but the telegram in particular is not flat; i.e. the typed message appears to be stuck-on.
