The exteriors of the body are covered in intricate corded designs; wave designs are also visible on the body of the piece. Amethysts were considered in antiquity to provide protection against drunkenness, perhaps suggesting that this item once belonged to someone who wanted to make sure that having a little tipple did not get too out of hand!
