An early 20th Century Suffragette movement amethyst, emerald and seed pearl fringe necklet mounted in 15ct. gold, in velvet lined case. NB: The Suffragettes were members of the WSPU (Women's Social & Political Union). A militant group of British women fighting for women's rights to vote. The colours of the Union were purple, green and white. The green stood of 'Hope', white for 'Purity', and violet (purple) for 'Dignity'. The three colours of the movement raised on banners by the women in public demonstrations, and sometimes jewellery was manufactured with stones in these colours worn by women to express their sympathy to the cause. Sometimes the purple was interpreted as violet giving the opportunity to create the GWV abbreviation meaning 'Give Women the Vote'. They are often pretty pieces of jewellery, but were also an expression of a desire to overturn the established ideas of society. See illustration
