Fair condition, clear tape across top and bottom margin, creases, tears, paper losses, small stains. County: UK, year of printing:1950s, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 77x50. Southsea is a seaside resort and geographic area, located in Portsmouth at the southern end of Portsea Island, Hampshire, England. Southsea is located to the south of Portsmouth city centre and to the east of Old Portsmouth. It developed as a fashionable Victorian seaside resort in the 19th century, originally named Croxton Town, but later borrowed the name of nearby Southsea Castle to promote itself and grew into a dense residential suburb and large distinct commercial and entertainment area, separate from the centre of Portsmouth. The 'Southsea' name of the area originates from Southsea Castle; a fort, located on the seafront and constructed in 1544 to help defend the Solent and approaches to Portsmouth Harbour. The areas surrounding Albert Road, Palmerston Road and Osborne Road comprise numerous bars, restaurants and independent shops. Palmerston Road is the main High Street of Southsea and contains two national department stores, as well as the local library. Albert Road is a distinct street containing shopping and cultural venues, which includes the Kings Theatre, a regional theatre built in 1907.

Tachisme.- Middleton (Derek Osborne, English 'Tachiste' Abstract Impressionist painter, 1917-83) Collection of material, including: his unpublished autobiography "How To Be An Artist", family photographs, autograph inventory of paintings and "Weekly Accounts"; original family photographs; a detailed inventory by him of his paintings between 1956 and 1982; his autograph 'Weekly Accounts', 1945 to 1951; original silkscreen prints (one signed) and reproductions of his work; over a hundred photographs of his work, in two folders, with detailed annotation for a sale following his death; a collection of his unpublished poetry; various CVs, produced both during his lifetime and after his death, with a detailed 'List of Buyers'; publications including gallery programmes and invitations; and a miscellaneous collection of related correspondence and other material, manuscripts etc., some browning, folds, some wear, v.s., v.d., 1940s - 80s (lge qty).⁂ Derek Middleton was an important figure in the abstract impressionist movement of the 1960s. Born in Shanghai in 1917, Middleton studied art in Munich, Florence and Dusseldorf, his work being hung at the Royal Academy in 1953 and 1954. In 1957, he had his first one-man show, at the New Vision; in each of the following three years, he was given one-man shows at the Redfern. Middleton went to live in Paris in 1958, and with the change of country he changed his vision and expanded his artistic range. Whereas his earlier works had retained some elements of representation, his later ones were almost purely abstract. And, increasingly, he became fascinated by the texture of wood, producing sculptures and reliefs notable for their bold design and fine craftsmanship. Examples of Middleton's work are in the British Museum, the Liverpool and Manchester municipal art galleries, the Museum of Modern art Cleveland, Ohio; City Hall, Quebec; and in many private collections in Europe and the United States. Provenance: The present collection of material derives from the papers of Middleton's nephew Colin Burton Stewart.

ARTHUR CHARLTON (1917-2007) colour lithograph - Swansea footballers playing against a team at the old Vetch Field ground circa 1950s (with referee in a blazer), unsigned, 28 x 38cms Auctioneer's Note: Arthur Charlton was born in the North-East of England but Swansea became his adopted home from 1952 onwards. A prisoner of war from 1942-45, he set out to record his experience through drawings and a diary; lack of materials forced him to improvise by utilising whatever materials were available, including bitumen paper, biscuit wrappers and the backs of labels from tins. On the 23 April 1945 he was released by the Russian army and flown back to England where he resumed his art education at the Royal College of Art. He then pursued a career as an artist and senior art lecturer, after taking an appointment at the Swansea School of Art. A close friend of the Swansea artists Glenys and Ron Cour, during sixty years of creative activity he created prints using wood engraving, etching, aquatint, lithography, linocut and silkscreen. His work is in the permanent collection of the Imperial war Museum and the Welsh Arts Council (print of Caswell Bay).
