During the Cold War era Space Race (1955-1975), the Soviet Union designed a series of Lunokhod robotic lunar rovers to land on the moon for exploration and research to support their manned Moon Race missions after NASA's successful Apollo landings; the rovers were launched by Proton-K rockets and transported by Luna spacecraft; the programme started with the Lunokhod 1A remote-controlled robot that was destroyed during its launch in 1969 and ended before the Lunokhod 3's planned launch in 1977 when the programme was cancelled; Lunokhod 1 (launched 1970) and Lunokhod 2 (launched 1973) were both successful missions and the last vehicles to be placed on an extraterrestrial body until the Mars Pathfinder in 1997. Nasen werden verkürzt, Falten geglättet, der Teint vereinheitlicht, der Kragen verändert und das Alter verborgen. In einem aufwendigen Prozess wird die nachgezeichnete Fotografie dann zu einer Druckvorlage umgearbeitet und schließlich in ein geradezu perfektes Gemälde verwandelt. Zu einer Zeit, in der die Porträtmalerei in der zeitgenössischen Kunst eher als aussterbende Gattung angesehen wird, schafft Warhol mit großem kommerziellen Geschick so innovative und neuartige Porträts berühmter wie weniger berühmter Zeigenossen, die den Kunsthistoriker Robert Rosenblum dazu veranlassen, Warhol den Titel 'Hofmaler der 1970er Jahre' zu verleihen. Im Falle der hier dargestellten ersten Ehefrau des griechischstämmigen New Yorker Reeders und Kunstsammlers George A. Embiricos, Maria 'Doda' Voridis-Goulandris, verwirklicht Warhol nachweislich sogar mindestens drei unterschiedliche Polaroid-Posen als farbenprächtige Leinwand-Arbeiten. Eine dieser Arbeiten befand sich bspw. in der Sammlung ihres Bruders Basil Goulandris (gest. 1994). Den Quellen nach zu urteilen scheint Mrs. Voridis eine schillernde Persönlichkeit gewesen zu sein. Mit ihrem Mann und zwei Söhnen lebt sie unter anderem in Athen, London und Gstaad. Zeit ihres Lebens unterstützt sie zahlreiche internationale wie auch regionale kulturelle und wohltätige Organisationen. Nach ihrem Tod im Jahr 2015 lassen ihre Söhne einige ihrer schönsten Kleidungsstücke (namentlich von Oscar de la Renta, Yves Saint Laurent, Carolina Herrera u. a.) zugunsten der griechischen Hilfsorganisation 'Hellenic Society for Disabled Children (ELEPAP)' versteigern. Ein damals veröffentlichtes Foto zeigt Mrs. Voridis mit pelzgesäumter Stola in einem blumig-barock angehauchten Wohnzimmer neben einer kleinen Anrichte mit mehreren Fabergé-Eiern. Zu Lebzeiten gehört das wohlhabende Ehepaar Voridis zu den bekannten Gesichtern der New Yorker High Society, sie sind häufig und gern gesehene Gäste. Erst am College of Fine Arts in seiner Heimatstadt Pittsburgh, kann der schmächtige, ewig blasse und unter Pigmentstörungen leidende Student aufgrund seiner herausragenden künstlerischen Begabung das Trauma des Ausgeschlossenseins überwinden. Die Kunst bietet dem Einzelgänger Warhol Zeit seines Lebens Anerkennung und Rückzugsort zugleich: als zeichnender oder später auch fotografierender Beobachter wird er zum künstlerischen Chronisten des amerikanischen Nachkriegsbooms. 1949 geht Warhol mit gerade 21 Jahren nach New York, wo er zunächst als Werbegrafiker arbeitet. Seinen ersten Auftrag erhält er im Herbst 1949 für das „Glamour“-Magazin, für welches er seine ersten Schuhzeichnungen anfertigt, die in ihrem streng linearen Stil für sein gesamtes weiteres Schaffen wegweisend sind.
