Before his international recognition as a pioneering NFT visual artist, ThankYouX's stencilled public pieces from the late 2000s drew inspiration from the works of Andy Warhol, nodding to the Pop Art luminary's technique of photographic silkscreen printing. Themes of Americana and pop culture permeate the present two works, Starting Somewhere and Purpose. Like Warhol, himself a champion of integrating new technologies including computers into his art, ThankYouX's artworks challenge the binary nature of the traditional art versus digital art debate. The present works attest to ThankYouX's dexterity as an artist; they embrace materiality, the theme of constant change, and technological innovation. Amongst the artist's studio works, his canvases with an embedded digital screen have elicited excitement both with online crypto art communities and the wider contemporary art audience. ThankYouX has honed this technique in recent years to express multiple layers of a story, and to allow the audience to switch between a microcosmic and macrocosmic perspective. Whilst the canvas provides a commentary on how an individual's choices can lead to new frontiers in life, the NFT display extrapolates this idea further by inviting the viewer into a new visual plane and, metaphorically, a new dimension. In the artist's words, 'Starting Somewhere expresses being unafraid to venture into new unknowns. Not letting obstacles hold you back from new ideas. To get to where you want to be, you must start somewhere.' This committed and passionate attitude reverberates throughout ThankYouX's technical approach in the present work. The atmospheric swathes of white, grey and black are disrupted by thick flashes of energetic cerulean and crimson. The dramatic impasto imbues the canvas with an instinctive character, and the cube motifs allude to the artist's digital NFT artworks as well as his larger murals painted on the streets of Los Angeles. True to his curiosity and innovative nature, ThankYouX includes unconventional materials in his works – a practice which echoes the masters of Neo-Dadaism such as John Chamberlain, César, and Christo and Jeanne-Claude. In Starting Somewhere, ThankYouX uses a unique, gold-coloured material called aluminised polyimide which was gifted to him by NASA. This material is typically used to protect satellites from the Sun as they orbit the Earth. In combining the realms of technology and painting, ThankYouX's works amplify the interdependency of mankind. Pioneering a hybrid of physical art and digital art, he juxtaposes blockchain based technology and digital displays with canvases and paint. The two works on offer effectively convey the tension and liminal feelings one encounters when pursuing a life-changing objective. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Although this work is often catalogued as a lithograph, or silkscreen, or pochoir, or photo-lithograph, in reality it is none of these. By 1964 Guenther Dietz, the printer, had created a unique fine printing system which involved the use of both lithographic plates and serigraphic screens. He and master printers from his company (Guenther Dietz Offizin Handpresse GmbH, Munich & Lengmoos, Germany) printed this work under the direct supervision and participation of Picasso himself. Dietz used grease crayon, lithographic tusche, lead pencil, and charcoal, among others, to create the matrixes and receive Picasso’s approval to print the edition (Cramer, ‘Livres’ 148). Artist: Damien Hirst (English, b.1965). Title: "Pharmacy Panel (Gold) (2004) (4 panel)". Medium: Color silkscreen and offset lithograph. Date: Composed 2004. Dimensions: Overall size: 36 x 41 1/4 in. (914 x 1048 mm). Image size: 36 x 41 1/4 in. (914 x 1048 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed lower right. Printed with five colors and metallic gold ink. The full sheet. Fine impression. Fine condition. Backed with a conservation support sheet. Provenance: Private collection, Birmingham, England. Comment(s): A panel of wallpaper (the complete pattern). In 1997, for his restaurant called 'The Pharmacy' located at Notting Hill Gate, London, Hirst designed wallpaper (the "wall chart") based on the pharmaceutical giant Merck’s handbook endpapers, showing pills and products and describing them with their pharmaceutical titles. Merck objected and he withdrew it as an artwork of wallpaper, after he had already plastered the restaurant with silver and gold sheets of the material. Hirst's venture gained further publicity thanks to a dispute with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, which claimed the name, pill bottles, and medical items on display could confuse people looking for a real pharmacy. The name itself breached the Medicines Act 1968, which restricts the use of the word "pharmacy". The restaurant's name was subsequently changed to "Army Chap" and then "Achy Ramp" (anagrams of "pharmacy"). Initial plans to open further restaurants outside London were quietly dropped and the restaurant itself closed in September, 2003. Sotheby's dispersed its contents in 2004. For the massive Pharmacy sale at Sotheby’s in 2004, though, new wallpaper was designed and made that didn’t offend copyright laws, using biblical titles and references to biblical passages. (698 x 698 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed in black marker, lower right. Edition unknown, presumed small. Cream wove paper. The full sheet. Fine impression. Very good condition; would be very good to fine but for a one inch tear in the upper left margin, not into the image, would be masked out by the mat when framed. Literature/catalogue raisonne: cf. Feldman/Schellmann pp.213-214; II.64-73. Comment(s): Scarce, and rare signed. The auction record for another impression of this print (signed) is $3,600 realized at Swann Galleries, NYC, February 5, 2013, lot 251. This "Flowers" image is slightly different from those of the limited edition published in 1970. According to Feldman/Schellmann (pg. 214, fourth edition, 2003) "prints exist which differ from the published edition (example illustrated on previous page)." The example illustrated on pg. 213 is our example and that sold by Swann, with different colors. Based on a photograph of hibiscus flowers by Patricia Caulfield in "Modern Photography," June, 1964. Our example, the advertisement announcement, is rarely at auction. Original and published prior to the publication of the Mao silkscreen set of ten. The color brochure mentioned in the ad is the Mao Announcement, offered also in this auction. As can be seen from the price list (illustrated but not part of this lot), the portfolio was available for $4,500 to the public, $2,400 by subscription. Artist: Keith Haring (American, 1958 - 1990). Title: "The Paris Review [1988 poster]". Medium: Original color silkscreen. Date: Composed 1988. Printed 1988. Dimensions: Overall size: 24 x 32 in. (610 x 813 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed and dated in black marker, lower right; signed and dated in the plate, lower left. Edition size unspecified, presumed extremely small - perhaps a few proofs?. White wove thick paper. Full margins. Fine impression with vibrant colors. Overall very good to fine condition. Literature/catalogue raisonne: Gundel/von der Osten "Keith Haring - Short Messages: Posters" #66. Provenance: Private collection, Sweden, thence to our consignor. Comment(s): This is a very rare poster. Haring created this image for the famous periodical "Paris Review" in 1988. An editioned silkscreen with virtually the same image was printed in 1989. Based on auction records the poster appears far more uncommon than the print. According to 'Gordon's Art Reference' the auction record for the print is $11,250 at Sotheby's, New York, October 30, 2014, lot #239. Gordon's records 51 offerings of the print at auction from 1990 to 2019. During the same period Gordon’s records only a single offering of the poster, at $4,493 (€4,000) by Van Ham Kunstauktionen, Cologne, Germany, 5/31/2017, lot #179. Both the poster and the print are silkscreens. They differ only in the color of the face (green in the poster, blue in the print), and the elimination of the plate signature and date in the print, both present in the poster. Please note our example is the first printing of the silkscreen poster in 1988 and not the offset lithograph later printing by the Haring estate in 1995. Artist: Keith Haring (American, 1958 - 1990). Title: "Crack Down! [program]". Medium: Original color silkscreen. Date: Composed 1986. Dimensions: Overall size: 9 x 12 1/16 in. (229 x 306 mm). Image size: 9 x 6 in. (229 x 152 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed in black marker, lower center; signed and dated in the plate. Edition unknown, probably c2,000, few survive. Light cream smooth wove paper. Full margins. Fine impression with vibrant colors. Condition: fine. Literature/catalogue raisonne: Gundel/von der Osten 40 for the poster. Comment(s): Scarce, and rare when signed. No auction records located. The image for the program is identical to that of the image for the poster created by Haring (with the exception of the background color) at the request of the concert promoter Bill Graham. Graham revisited his old Bronx neighborhood in August of 1986 and, appalled to see that drugs had effectively wiped out the local culture, foresaw a menacing problem in the crack craze. He teamed with David Maldonado to stage a Crack Benefit in the city, but scaled back plans several times since few shared his apprehension. Ultimately, two concerts were held, one at Madison Square Garden on October 31st and the other, an all-Latin show at the Felt Forum, the following night. Much like theatrical playbills, programs have been used at concerts for decades. With information on bands and their members, it gives the concertgoer a chance to get to know the musicians they will soon see live. The program offered here is from the performance at the Felt Forum on November 1st, which featured Santana, Ruben Blades y Seis del Solar, Willie Colon, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, and Bobby Rodriguez y la Nueva Compania. Literature/catalogue raisonne: cf. Marechal 29; Feldman/Schellmann II.10. Comment(s): Extremely rare. No auction records located. Created for the exhibition of Warhol's record album covers at the ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum, Aarhus, Denmark, and the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, Sweden, in 1981. Features the famous image of the banana, which Warhol created for the cover of the legendary 1967 Velvet Underground and Nico record album. Literature/catalogue raisonne: Baggot/Hockney Posters 94 (1987); Baggot/Hockney Posters 103 (1994). Comment(s): Huge, almost seven feet high. Features Hockney's oil on canvas "Harlequin" (1980). Published by the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, New York. Printed by the Petersburg Press, New York. Poster image copyright © David Hockney. Hockney, often referred to as England's greatest living artist, made brilliant contributions to the world of opera as a stage and costume designer. He also designed numerous posters. Beginning in 1975 with his work for Stravinksy's 'The Rakes Progress', until 1990 when he worked on 'Turandot', Hockney worked for the major opera houses. Among his most memorable productions were Mozart's 'Magic Flute' and Wagner's 'Tristan and Isolde'. His collaboration with the Metropolitan Opera on Eric Satie's 'Parade' is best remembered for this poster. The image, with Hockney's neo-pop decor and costumes, showcases a juggler whose contortions fit eye-catchingly into the poster's elongated format. If the opera itself is not so popular, this image has become a classic. [courtesy Nick Lowry, Swann Galleries]. [28321-8-1200]
