MINKO: A FINE WOOD HIBASHI-IRE SAGEMONO IN THE FORM OF AN EDAMAME BEAN POD WITH HORN-INLAID SNAILBy Tanaka Juntoku Minko (1735-1816), signed Minko with seal Minko Japan, Tsu, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Finely and naturalistically carved as an edamame bean pod with high relief of a leafy vine with undercutting just below the cover providing for cord attachment, with further himotoshi trough the looped stem. The lower end of the bean pod with a small snail exquisitely inlaid in pale translucent horn, beside the signature MINKO with seal Minko. The interior with two metal hibashi. LENGTH 33 cmCondition: Good condition, minor wear, few tiny nicks, the undercut section of the vine with minor old repairs. The present lot is a case for hibashi (lit. 'fire chopsticks'), metal chopsticks used to arrange pieces of charcoal during the tea ceremony. Tanaka Juntoko Minko (1735-1816) was one of the few names mentioned in the Soken Kisho of 1781, the first publication mentioning netsuke. He was famous during his lifetime and is widely regarded as one of the greatest netsuke carvers.

ROBERT GLEN (American, b. 1940) limited edition (4/6) bronze - camels drinking from a trough, signed and dated 1986, 39h x 48w x 31.5cms d, on black marble plinth.Provenance: private collection PembrokeshireAuctioneer's Note: Born in Kenya in 1940, Robert Glen’s interest in art and natural history began at an early age. At sixteen years old, he was accepted to serve an apprenticeship in taxidermy at the renowned studio of Coloman Jonas in Denver, Colorado. It was then that his interest in sculpture was born. Returning home after three years of training, he began a transition from taxidermy to sculpting animals in the European tradition of animaliers, working in various media before casting his first bronze in 1970. Since then, Robert Glen’s work has met with great success. His sculptures reside in many private collections including those of the late Queen, the Aga Khan, and the late Kenyan President Jomo Kenyatta. He has also held many one man shows in the USA, Canada, UK, Monte Carlo, Spain and South Africa. Robert Glen's public commissions include one of the largest equestrian sculptures in history, 'Mustangs of Las Colinas', in Texas.Comments: natural verdigris patina, very good overall.
An Arts and Crafts oak Desk/side Cabinet, the rectangular top above a hinged fall front with inset stylised foliate repousse panel, opening to reveal interior, with similar panel to the other side, raised on trestle ends with pierced stylised cut-outs, joined by a book trough stretcher and raised on short splayed legs, W 61 cm x H 77 cm x D 31 cm. Provenance: property of a West Country Collector. After buying an Arts & Crafts house, the vendors researched and sought-out beautiful, often unique, Arts & Crafts pieces to furnish their home.
