John Frederick Herring Jnr. (1815-1907) A farmyard with horses feeding from a hay trough Signed and dated 1850, oil on canvas, 42cm dia. (tondo)Provenance: John Noott Fine Paintings & Works of Art, Broadway Apparently unlined, one key missing. Fair tension. The picture surface has been extended by 1-2inches all around the edge with overpaint. Minor brittle age craquelure, all stable and not very elevated. A few tiny scattered losses including one unrestored loss in the cheek of the far right horse. There has been abrasion to some of the more delicate areas of paint, mostly to the trees, the darker patches of the ground, and in the brown and glazed areas. This has been suppressed by a campaign of small strokes of retouching, including minor areas on the horses. An even surface gloss. Some old ingrained dirt visible in lighter passages. Light surface dirt.
