An early 20th century Steiff bulldog c.1905 with button to the ear and traces of lined wrinkles to the face, approximately 36cm long; together with an early 20th century elephant with articulated limbs, 39cm long; and a small Daulton glazed ‘Baby’ hot water bottle, 19cm wide (3)The bulldog and elephant formerly belonging to The Hon. Ewen Montagu CBE QC DL (1901-1985), the Naval Intelligence Officer behind the World War II Operation Mincemeat, which successfully fooled the German forces into believing the allies were going to land in Greece rather than Sicily. Montagu wrote the book ‘The Man Who Never Was’, an account of Operation Mincemeat, after the war, this was then made into a film in 1956 and more recently 2021 with Colin Firth playing the role of Ewen Montagu.The bulldog with some areas of loss to the fur, some areas of repair, the tail probably reattached, repair to the stomach, the front right paw with split and in need of repair. The elephant with losses to the stuffing particularly within his forelimbs, a seam opening up on his back, further minor holes marks, and wear to the fur. The hot water bottle with minor mark and a hairline crack over the top back edge.
