A Derby Imari pattern part dinner service, decorated to the centre with a tree and flowering branches, the borders with flowerheads and scrolls, comprising seven dinner plates, 25cm diam, nine dessert plates, 23cm diam, eleven dessert dishes, three soup bowls, three side plates, three quatrefoil side dishes, two similar and a meat plate, crossed batons and D mark in red; a Royal Crown Derby two-handled tureen and cover, 32cm wide, printed mark in red, retailed for Mortlocks, Oxford Street
Walter Lowndes at Royal Crown Derby. Walter Lowndes took up an apprenticeship with Royal Crown Derby in September 1952 as a copper plate engraver for the printing process, his father was a plate-maker at the factory. He trained under Mr. Harry Short, and completed his apprenticeship in 1958 and then left to do National Service, and came back as a journeyman at the beginning of 1961. He worked at the Derby factory for the next ten years, finally being made redundant due to changes in the printing process at the end of 1970. A Royal Crown Derby teacup, saucer, side plate and bread and butter plate, designed by Walter Lowdnes, printed with Chichester Festival Theatre and Shakespearian scenes, in colours, printed mark, c.1960; Chichester Festival Service sketches and drawings from the original designs. Chichester Festival Theatre. Chichester Festival Theatre, was built in 1961. Princess Alexandra laid the foundation stone and was presented with a one-off Royal Crown Derby tea service. At the factory Mr Philip Robinson was in charge of design, and gave Lowdnes the opportunity to design the tea service, the remit was "Scenes from Shakespeare"
A Royal Crown Derby sample shaped circular Italian Garden plate, designed by Walter Lowndes, printed in underglaze blue, gilt scroll border, 26cm diam, printed mark; Italian Garden original drawings and sketches. The Walter Lowndes drawings in this lot were the ideas submitted, prior to the sample plate being produced, the pattern did not go into production, so this sample may well be the only one in existence
Two Royal Crown Derby Derbyshire County Cricket Club side plates, engraved in monochrome with cricket pavilion and cricket stumps, bat, pads and hat, 16cm diam; original pencil drawings. The engravings were used on the Derbyshire County Cricket Club casket, made for the club`s centenary in 1970. The vignettes were copper plates cut by Walter Lowndes
