A RARE ROYAL CROWN DERBY ARMORIAL PLATE MADE AS A REPLACEMENT FOR AN 18TH C CHINESE ORIGINAL, 1907-08 23cm diam, printed mark The arms are those of the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (succeeded 1904, d.1944) and his wife Nina Cecilia (d.1938) daughter of the Rev. C W F Cavendish-Bentinck. They were married in 1881. Their youngest daughter became Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (1900-2002). ++In fine condition
TWO ROYAL CROWN DERBY PINK GROUND PLATES, 1933 & 34 painted by W E J Dean, both signed, with a shipping scene or cottage, 26 & 27cm diam, printed mark, two Royal Crown Derby plates, one painted by the same, signed, with Tissington Spires, the other printed and painted with Chatsworth, signed T Price and a Derby decorated plate, painted by J McLaughlin, signed, with a view of Tarbet (5) ++The pink plates with slight wear, the others all in fine condition
TWO OUTSIDE DECORATED DERBY PLAQUES, C1880 painted by R Bier, both signed, with flowers, 45 x 37cm, one impressed Derby Little is recorded about R Bier, a Crown Derby artist whose flower painting often accompanied G Landgraf's figure painting on important vases or moon flasks. The artist was allocated patterns 767, 875 and 968. See Twitchett (J) and B Bailey, Royal Crown Derby, third edition, Woodbridge 1988, p218. ++Both in fine condition, one with some localised degradation of the dark green pigment but this is not too noticeable
A RARE CROWN DERBY EGGSHELL BODY DUCHESS CABINET CUP AND SAUCER, 1884 painted by James Platts with portrait medallions of girls, the saucer with 'agates' on a richly gilt and raised gilt claret ground, saucer 10.5cm diam, printed mark, painted artist's initial A contemporary example of bute shape is in Royal Crown Derby Museum and illustrated Twitchett (J) and B Bailey, Royal Crown Derby, third edition, Woodbridge 1988, illus p104 and for an example of Duchess shape (pattern 1294) also dating from 1884 decorated by George Lambert see plt 25. A Crown Derby Devon plate, painted by James Platts in 1882 (Twitchett and Bailey, op cit, illus p107) is painted with the same girl as appears on one of the three portrait medallions on the present cup. ++Cup with very fine descending hairline crack
