Marcos Grigorian (Iran, 1925-2007)Convergence earth, resin, straw and mixed media on panelsigned, titled and dated on the verso, executed in 1981115 x 116cm (45 1/4 x 45 11/16in).Footnotes:MARCOS GRIGORIAN – UNEARTHED: AN IMPORTANT GROUP OF COMPOSITIONS INCLUDING THE EXCEPTIONAL 1981 EARTHWORK 'CONVERGENCE'Provenance:Property from a private collection, Los AngelesOriginally in the collection of the Armenian sculptor Rafael Petrosyan (1937-)Exhibited:Marcos Grigorian, Gorky Gallery, 1981, New York'Surely not in vainMy substance of the common Earth was takenAnd to this Figure moulded... to be broke,Or trampled back to shapeless Earth again?'- Omar Khayyam'Perhaps I was homesick for the native soil of Iran, or maybe it was just the opposite – a reaction to being obsessed with my past' - Marcos GrigorianBonhams is delighted to present this superlative group of works by pioneering Iranian Armenian artist Marcos Grigorian. Ranging from one of the most monumental, exquisitely rendered, and technically complex examples of his signature Earthworks, to rare painted compositions formerly in the collection of the artists uncle and gallery-owner, the present grouping provides a comprehensive and compelling accounts of Grigorian's oeuvre.'Convergence' is part of Grigorian's acclaimed Earthworks Series. Earthworks were inspired by the use of materials and forms that went beyond the conventional means of art-making. Compared to the Western Land Artists, who similarly created compositions through the handling of earth itself, Grigorian predated this movement by a decade.Born to Armenian parents in 1925, Grigorian was brought up in Russia for a short time before emigrating to Iran with his family at the age of five. After studying at Kamal-el-Molk Art School in Tehran, he moved to Rome to complete his studies at the Academia di Bella Arti in the 1950s. His move to Rome allowed him to study the works of classical and modern masters and was a turning point in his career. His subsequent moves to Iran and then to the United States in the later years of his career were to be equally influential to his artistic development. His early abstract style was supplanted by expressionist figurative compositions on his return to Iran in 1954. In 1962 he moved to New York where he began his most famous Earthworks Series. These works are mostly on a square format, which became something of a signature for Grigorian. The square form was a representation of sacred geometry and harmonious proportions. The organic materials such as hay, straw, sand, soil and clay which he used to create his almost three-dimensional compositions were to be equally defining. In experimenting with soil and mud, he believed he was rebuilding life and exploring the complex relationship between mankind and earth. The present work is reminiscent of the commonly held theory that the Earth and the other planets developed over millions of years out of particles and gas. The traces of a convergent movement towards the centre of the canvas evoke the image of the universe forming out of primordial dust - and the monochrome earthy surface impress upon the viewer the feeling of a distant aerial view from space. The textured surface and the play between light and shadow endow the painting with an even more dramatic effect, adding to its three-dimensionality.In 1965, The Museum of Modern Art, New York acquired a work from Grigorian's Earthworks Series on the recommendation of Alfred H. Barr Jr., the legendary former director of the museum. A second work was then donated to the museum by Nelson Rockefeller in 1978. Further examples of Grigorian's works were recently acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and can also be found in the collections of Tehran's Museum of Contemporary Art and the National Gallery of Armenia in Yerevan.Besides being a leading figure in avant-garde Iranian and Armenian art history, Grigorian was an artist, writer, gallerist, collector, pioneer and a teacher. From his Gallery Esthétique in 1950s Tehran, which provided a free exhibition space for younger artists, to his pioneering decision to organise the first national Tehran Biennial in 1958 (after he was awarded the honour of representing Iran in the 1956 Venice Biennial) Grigorian desired to make an impact on the development of art.He was instrumental in the introduction and promotion of modern art in Iran in the 1950s and extensively promoted the works of Armenian artists in the United States in the 1980s. Despite travelling around the world, Grigorian chose to return to his ancestral home of Armenia for the remainder of his life and donated his complete collection to the Armenian government as a sign of his lifelong commitment to his nation. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 104

HUGO FONTELA (Grado, Asturias, 1986)."Pier", 2008.Mixed media on canvas.Attached certificate of authenticity issued by the artist.Signed, dated and located on the back (Manhattan NYC).Measurements: 50 x 50 cm; 59 x 59 cm.Hugo fíntela dedicated several series to the view of piers and the pictorial assimilation of mimes, always from his characteristic aesthetic lyricism. Through "Piers", "Big Pier" and "Blue piers", he captured the abstraction of a figurative landscape in which he imbues a great emotionality that invites the viewer to immerse himself in a misty atmosphere. This work is part of a relevant stage in Hugo Fontela's career, since after 2007, he decided to start with the series Japanese Landscapes, which together with Blue piers, made up the exhibition An American Vision (Casa de Vacas, Madrid 2008), which received wide recognition from both the art critics and the public. The prestigious and young painter of Asturian origin Hugo Fontela has dedicated several series to Manhattan, where he has lived since 2005. In the painting that concerns us, his communicative and expressive power is evident, using the minimum elements, achieving a composition of great visual elegance. His language, although abstract, lets us read between the lines stories buried in the memory. The artist explains that he usually starts from the image of a place, often an urban landscape, which has been engraved in his memory, and then visualizes that imprint on canvas or paper. His goal is to build pieces in which the unreal is an essential aspect in order to understand them, to create new realities and to ensure that the image that moved him at the beginning also moves the viewer. His love for painting began in childhood. From the hand of the Asturian painter Amado González Hevia (Favila), he entered the School of Arts and Crafts of Avilés when he was fourteen years old. He later entered the Oviedo School of Art, and when he was about to begin studying for a degree in Fine Arts, he decided to move to New York and joined the Art Students League of New York. In 2005 he received the BMW Painting Award, in the twentieth edition, and in 2007 he won the prize for best artist at the Graphic Art Fair ESTAMPA,3 awarded by the Association of Art Critics of Madrid. In 2006, together with Juan Hidalgo, he participated as a guest at the XVIII Bienal de Pintura de Zamora. In 2011 the Museum of the Abbey of Montserrat, in Barcelona, begins an exhibition of his works made in America, which is inaugurated by the Prince and Princess of Asturias. That same year, as a result of two stays in Rio de Janeiro with Oscar Niemeyer (2009 and 2011), the exhibition Niemeyer by Fontela is held at the Niemeyer Center in Avilés. Banco Sabadell has his work. Among the centers that have exhibited his works are the Casa de Vacas in Madrid, the Revillagigedo Palace in Gijón, the Círculo de Arte in Barcelona, the Cervantes Institute in Chicago, the 100kubik Gallery in Cologne, the Niemeyer Center, the Gabarron Foundation and the Carles Taché Gallery in Barcelona.

Lot 2

DAVID BRUSH (Madrid)."Pollock as pretext".Mixed media on canvas glued to board.Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Signed, dated and titled on the back.Measurements: 60 x 120 cm.Self-taught, Davis Brush began in the art world through the inspiration of his daughter. He opened his first solo exhibition "Feria de Colores", in April 2018 in Boadilla del Monte, Madrid, which was followed by numerous exhibitions. Lot 92

GOTTFRIED HONEGGER (Zurich, 1917-2016)."Untitled," 1988.Mixed media on canvas.Signed and dated on the back.Measurements: 75 x 75 cm.An outstanding exponent of concrete art, Gottfried Honegger remained faithful to the postulates of this abstract movement until the end of his days. This minimalist work that we present here belongs to a period of maturity of the artist, in which he already enjoyed international recognition and his utopian postulates had had an impact on the art world.Gottfried Honegger was a Swiss artist and collector. He studied window dressing at the Zurich School of Art, and taught there from 1948. His early work was in commercial graphic design. Between 1955 and 1958 he was art director at Geigy. He lived in New York from 1958 to 1960, and held his first exhibition there. In 1961 he moved to Paris and concentrated on painting, focusing on the exploration of the circle and the square; from 1968 he worked in sculpture. Honegger also spent some time in Texas, as an artist-in-residence at the University of Dallas. Gottfried Honegger was one of the most original creators of concrete art, recognized in both the United States and Europe. He was the author of numerous monumental works. He worked with variations on the same theme: volume, structure, stelae.... While maintaining the influence of the concrete art of Max Bill and Lhose Richard, Honegger resorted in the 1960s and 1970s to a certain vertical mathematical programming. The use of computers allowed him to develop his plastic research. He was awarded the Order of Arts and Letters under the direction of Jack Lang at the French Ministry of Culture; in 1999 he became a member of the Legion of Honor. Together with Sybil Albers, he created in 1990 the Espace de l'Art Concrète (Mouans-Sartoux), from their collections. In 2015 the Pompidou Center in Paris had dedicated a retrospective to this singular artist, whose works are in the collections of several major museums, such as the MoMa in New York.

VICTOR MIRA (Zaragoza, 1949 - Munich, 2003)."Bachcantata".1989.Mixed media on canvas.Signed, dated and titled on the back.Measurements: 146 x 114 cm; 150 x 118 cm (frame).Sculptor, painter, engraver and writer, his formation was basically self-taught. Soon after he moved to Madrid, where he exhibited in 1973 at the Pol Verdié gallery. After spending some time between Madrid and Germany, he moved to Barcelona in 1977. In 1979 he had his first solo exhibition in Munich, at the Tanit gallery, and the following year he showed his work in the United States, at the George Staempfli gallery in New York. From then on his international career took off, with exhibitions in Germany, the United States, Holland, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Colombia, France, Belgium and Austria, while he continued to exhibit regularly in Spain. In 2003, shortly before his death, he received the award for best living Spanish artist at the ARCO Fair. The most recent retrospective exhibition dedicated to this artist was held in Düsseldorf, Germany, at the Beck & Eggeling gallery. During these years he painted several murals in Lanzarote and exhibited his work in several countries. In 1964 he moved to New York where he exhibited, among others, at the Catherine Viviano Gallery.
