§ Oswald Herzog, (German, 1881-1939), reclining female nude, bronze, signed in the bronze, Noack, Berlin foundry mark 20.50 x 40cm (8 x 16in) Other Notes: A Polish-born artist, Oswald Herzog, grew up in Germany and became renowned primarily as a sculptor. By 1919, when his works were first exhibited in the Galerie Der Sturm exhibition, Herzog was a well-established artist based in Berlin and associated with the famous Sturm circle of artists. Set up by Herwarth Walden (1879-1941), the German Expressionist artist and one of the greatest champions of German avant-garde art of his time, Der Sturm exhibitions became the mainstay of Berlin's modern art scene. Displaying the likes of Pablo Picasso, Jean Metzinger, Paul Klee, Gino Severini and others, the exhibitions aimed to introduce the works of Cubists, Italian Futurists and Expressionists to Germany. In 1933, Herzog's art was condemned as 'degenerate' and was exhibited at the 'Entartete Kunst' exhibition in Munich in 1937 among the 650 works of modern art deemed degenerate by the Nazi Party. In his own writings on art theory, Herzog often referred to his own work and labelled his sculptures as 'Abstract Expressionist'. By the 1920s, the human form and individualised modelling of his sculptures gradually gave way to more abstract, elongated and distorted shapes, only vaguely reminiscent of a human figure. The surfaces of his works are typically smooth and glossy. His sculptures, which come to the market rarely, have been likened to those of Alexander Archipenko and William Wauer.
§ Hugh Mackinnon (British, b.1925) Betty with Cushion oil on board 50.50 x 40.50cm (20 x 16in) Other Notes: Mackinnon obtained a scholarship to Alleyne Grammar School in Stevenage and later enrolled at the Slade School of Fine Art. Initially, Mackinnon was influenced by European abstraction and Bauhaus, particularly by the works of Mondrian and Klee. However, by the time of his first solo show at the Gimpel Fils Gallery in 1952 his work had taken on the simplified realism characteristic of his later style. This likely stemmed from Mackinnon's final years at the Slade, where Leo Schlesinger, a German-Jewish refugee, introduced him to stylised Indian sculpture and Russian icons. These primitive influences are readily apparent in the curvilinear forms of 'Betty with a Cushion'. Mackinnon was known to have painted portraits of Betty on at least two other occasions - one of which is now part of the British Arts Council collection. Mackinnon's work has been exhibited at the Holland Park Gallery, the Ash Barn Gallery, and Campbell and Franks, and has received greater recognition in the wake of his 2006 retrospective at the Millinery Works Gallery. Creasing to the original page in some areas, the longest of which extends across the whole width of the page. Additional creasing below the figure's left hand and further surface abrasion that has led to loss of paint around the back of the head and shoulder.

Born in Berlin to Dutch parents, Citroen started drawing at an early age. Encouraged by his parents he first studied photography under Edwin Blumenfeld and later fine art at the Bauhaus under Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Johannes Itten. It was during this time that Citroen started work on his photo-montage Metropolis, 1923, perhaps the artist’s best known work and inspiration for Fritz Lang’s film of the same title. After a brief sojourn to Paris and Switzerland, Citroen moved to Amsterdam where he held his first exhibition of photographs in 1927 and for the following eight years photography would be his focus. Later in his career Citroen turned to painting, more specifically portraiture, noting: Because I am a portraitist, people are more important than art. Without people there would be no art. Drawing many important Dutch personalities such as Gerrit Kouwenaar (1967), K. Schippers (1971), Peter Vos (1974) and Liesbeth List (1979), the artist produced over 7000 portraits before his death in 1983. λ Indicates that this lot may be subject to Droit de Suite royalty charges.
