Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Goldfinch" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Birds and Flowers of the Meadow and Garden Collection "The Goldfinch and Bull Thistle" porcelain plate. Love of life is the immediate quality of this striking and colorful bird. Small flocks of Goldfinches are forever cavorting in tree tops, playing and chattering, warbling a tuneful canary rhythm or calling each other in sweet, musical notes. On and on they sing, even when flying or snacking on their favorite seeds. They bound along in the air as if they are riding an imaginary roller coaster. Long after the other birds have settled down to their staid family life, the Goldfinches continue their merry club life. They are among the last birds of the season to nest, delaying the raising of their young to late summer. Image Size: 8.75 x 8.25 in. Overall Size: 18 x 18 in. Unframed. (B05401)
Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Flowers - Manuscript Illumination" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Combination Cover for the Germany Medieval Manuscript Illumination stamps issued October 15, 1985. As the Middle Ages progressed, magnificent illuminated manuscripts became quite ornate. Yet, they continued to enhance the beauty of the books they adorned and added greatly to the readers' enjoyment. During this time, around the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, there was a growing interest in brightly colored border-frames which actually framed the text in colors of green and scarlet. Figures like those shown in the stamp on this First Day Cover were scattered liberally through the manuscripts. The figures on this stamp are taken from the fifteenth century manuscript entitled the Berlin Parchment Manuscript which was probably created in Germany between 1520 and 1530. Like many manuscripts of its day, the Berlin Parchment Manuscript was alive with the bright colors of flowers and the interesting animals of the garden. Many of these colors actually sparkled with gold and silver. Indeed, miniature painting is not considered to be true illumination unless it uses gold or silver to create a beautiful shimmering effect. Since many of the works embellished with the miniature illuminations were religious books -- prayer books and scriptures -- the subjects of the illuminations often had religious significance. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 15 x 20 in. Unframed. (B09832)
