A GROUP OF THREE ENGLISH PLASTER MASKS BY D.BRUCCIANI & CO, MID 19TH CENTURY After the Antique, variously stamped and numbered 14in. (35.5cm) high, 13in. (33cm.) high respectively (3) The sculptor Domenico Brucciani (b. 1815) opened workshops in Covent Garden in the late 1830s and was celebrated for his 'Galleria' in the 1860s. Apart from the supply of plaster casts, he also provided models for Messrs. Elkington and Co.'s electrotypes. In 1922 the Brucciani Company's moulds were taken over by the Board of Education through the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
AN ENGLISH CAST IRON MODEL OF THE BORGHESE VASE ATTRIBUTED TO the Handyside Foundry, mid 19th century 28in. (71cm.) high on an associated English stoneware fluted column, second half 19th century 24sin. (62cm.) high Andrew Handyside aquired the firm in 1848, formerly owned by Weatherhead and Glover 1818-1843; thence Thomas Wright 1843-1848. He expanded the production to cover architectural, engineering and decorative wares such as garden vases and fountains.
A pair of white marble figures of infant fauns ATTRIBUTED TO J.P.WHITE, THE PYGHTLE WORKS, BEDFORD, CIRCA 1890 Each shown seated, one with tambourine, the other with cymbals, on integral square section spreading socles 25in. (63.5cm.) high (2) John Parish White (1855-1917), took over the Pyghtle Works in Bedford in 1896, producing an extensive range of garden ornaments in lead, marble, bronze, stone and terracotta. White illustrates four similar figures to the present lot in his 1935 catalogue Bird Baths, Garden Figure, Vases and Ornaments.
A LARGE COADE STONE URN BY COADE, LAMBETH, DATED 1799 The ovoid body with waisted top and knop finial, with a band of vitruvian scroll between two lion masks, the lobed underside above a waisted socle and rectangular base with impressed stamp COADE LAMBETH 1799 30in. (76cm.) high, 36in. (91.5cm.) wide, 24sin. (62.2cm.) deep This model, and its many variants, features in the catalogue of Coade etchings, of circa 1785, as No.105. They have been used diversly, from adorning gateways (Audley End) to memorials (Admiral Bligh) and also as garden ornaments.
AN ENGLISH TERRACOTTA GARDEN SEAT ATTRIBUTED TO JAMES PULHAM & SON, BROXBOURNE, LATE 19TH CENTURY Of slightly curved outline, the foliate panelled back centred by a boy within a roundel, the ends as winged griffins on stepped bases 44in. (111.8cm.) high, 80in. (203cm.) wide, 24sin. (62cm.) deep, the seat - 17sin. (44.5cm.) high The design for the present seat appears as No.405 'The Blenheim Seat', page 43, Section V in the Pulham catalogue of Garden Ornament from the early 20th Century.
A LARGE SECTION OF 'PULHAMITE' STONEWARE BALUSTRADE BY JAMES PULHAM & SON, BROXBOURNE, LATE 19TH CENTURY Comprising seven stepped rectangular piers, two mounted with urn finials, the ovolo pierced frieze with angled 'capstones' and chamfered rectangular plinth, all in sections, one urn with impressed oval stamp PULHAMITE 48in. (122cm.) high to top of urns, 26in. (66cm.) high to top of rail, 10in. (25.4cm.) wide This design of balustrade is illustrated in a 1920's Pulham catalogue of Garden Ornament, Section VII, page 58, No.463, the 'Uckfield Balustrade'.
A LARGE ARTIFICIAL STONE FOUNTAIN BY AUSTIN & SEELEY, CIRCA 1835 Modelled with a merman blowing a conch, seated above the shell basin, supported to the underside by three adorsed dolphins, signed in relief on the rocky outcrop below the Merman AUSTIN & SEELEY, with further indistinct inscription and date 183* 104in. (264cm.) high, 60in. (152.3cm.) wide An article by J.C.Loudon on Austin & Seeley's fountains illustrates this model, this appears to confirm the indistinct dating of the present piece to the mid 1830's. The remains of a fountain by the firm with similar dolphin base stands in the Swiss Garden, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire (see Davis, page 204). The fountain also appears on the cover of the SPECIMEN BOOK OF AUSTIN & SEELEY'S ARTIFICIAL STONE MANUFACTORY, a catalogue of 1844. A line drawing on page 18 of the catalogue lists it: Entwined Dolphin Fountain with Shell and Triton. The fountain was also available with a plain tazza above the dolphins. It is rare to find a signed piece by the company.
