A 19th century Icon. The combining of the Descent into Hell iconography with the Resurrection became popular in Russian icon painting during the 18th and 19th centuries. In this version the main images are surrounded by feasts from the life of Christ and the Virgin, as well as other sacred narratives. The image anticipates the general resurrection of mankind at the Last Judgement. [1] In the top right corner we can see the opening of the Heavenly Gates and the righteous entering the Garden of Paradise. In the bottom left corner of the image we see the Mouth of Hell with sinners being cast into its abyss from which Christ rescues Adam and Eve. In our version, the edge of the icon has an intricate pattern with paint and gold leaf. The images around the central picture are the Festivals of the Church showing scenes from the life of the Virgin and from the life of Christ. Included in our version: the Birth of the Virgin, Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, Annunciation, Birth of Christ, Presentation of Christ in the Temple, Baptism, Raising of Lazarus, Entry into Jerusalem, Transfiguration, Ascension, Pentecost, Trinity, and the Dormition of the Virgin. Fine condition! The decorative border in this example and the figures show the influence of folk art, which was widely popular in nineteenth century Russia.

VICTORIAN SIKES PATTERN HYDROMETER Manufactured by Buss of Hatton Garden. Containing: Brass Bulb; Set of 9 graduated weights (plus 1 spare); end block and Ivorine Mercury Thermometer in fitted plush lined mahogany case with Ivorine plaque. All brass components stamped "Buss" and with set registration no. 17330 (except spare weight which has different number). Calibration certificate glued to base of box, last calibration date 10/04/62. Slide rule missing from set.
