Attributed to James Buckman (1814-1884). A watercolour album of fungi, a collection of sixty numbered leaves with watercolours of fungi on rectos (plus one loosely inserted), some folding, many of the drawings annotated in pencil, with botanical names and places, chiefly Worcestershire (e.g. Nunnery Wood, The Holt, Henwick), several dated 1861 and one dated 1848, preliminary blank with newspaper cutting mounted with adhesive tape (offset to first two leaves) and pencil inscription above 'James Buckman 1814-1884', sheet size approximately 25.5 x 6.75cm (10 x 17ins), bound into near contemporary half calf gilt, spine label gilt lettered 'Fungi J. Buckman', extremities slightly rubbed, large 8vo James Buckman was professor of geology, botany and zoology at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester from 1848 to 1863. He founded the college's botanical garden, and conducted a number of important botanical experiments, some of which were mentioned in Darwin's 'Origin of Species'. James Buckman was a friend of botanist Edwin Lees (1800-1887) who, with Buckman's encouragement, founded the Worcestershire Naturalists' Club. Lees proposed that the club compile a much-needed flora of the county, which was eventually published as 'The Botany of Worcestershire', and it was his suggestion that the Woolhope Naturalists' Field Club initiated in 1868 the annual fungus forays in Herefordshire for which it became nationally famous. *Hoadly (Benjamin, 1676-1761, Bishop of Winchester). Declaration of Trust from Benjamin Hoadly, Bishop of Winchester, 6 April 1747, concerning ,000 bank annuities held by trustees on behalf of his second wife Mary n‚e Newey, the trustees being Benjamin Avery, Doctor of Laws, and Edward Short of the Tower of London, folding vellum deed, endorsed with appointments of Doctor Benjamin Hoadly, doctor in physic, as trustee after the death of Edward Short, 26 May 1748, and of Edmund Anguish of Hatton Garden, after the death of Dr Benjamin Hoadly, 13 September 1758, with signatures of Benjamin and Mary Hoadly, both with episcopal seal, on main deed, also both signing the subsequent appointments, and with Dr Benjamin Hoadly signing the deed of his appointment as a trustee, overall 62 x 74 cm Benjamin Hoadly was Bishop of Winchester 1734-1761 and according to ODNB 'was arguably the most famous churchman of his generation... [who] exercised a profound influence over political and religious thought in eighteenth century England'. His second son, Benjamin (1706-1757) was a physician and playwright who acted as physician to both the King's and Prince of Wales' households. Benjamin Avery (died 1674) was a Presbyterian minister and physician and an influential public advocate for dissenters. He was trustee of Dr Williams Trust 1728-64 and governor of Guy's Hospital 1729 and later treasurer. (1)

CONDITION REPORT Cannonball tea bowl and saucer: some light surface scratches, but overall OK. Slop bowl has surface scratches and some small foot rim chips as well as a blemish in the glaze of the foot rim in production. The Profile Bud saucer has some light surface scratches as well as the tea bowl.
