18TH-19TH CENTURY CARNELIAN INTAGLIO PENDANTDepicting Hercules in the Garden of the Hesperides, beneath a tree of golden apples, guarded by the serpent, Ladon, mounted in gold, length 3.2cmFootnotes:The subject in this intaglio derives from an engraving in 'Hesperides sive de malorum aureorum cultura et usu', a famous 17th century discourse on citrus trees by Jesuit scholar and botanist, Giovanni Battista Ferrari. The book was published in Rome in 1646 and Ferrari was assisted by his friend, Cassiano dal Pozzo, an influential scholar, art connoisseur and the first and most prominent patron of Poussin in Rome. The publication featured numerous botanically and mythologically themed engravings by sought-after Roman artists, such as Cornelis Bloemaert and Johann Friedrich Greuter after designs by Guido Reni, Pietro da Cortona, Domenichino, Nicolas Poussin amongst others. These mythological illustrations became models for many Baroque artworks depicting the myth of Hesperides and the 'golden apples' (citrus fruit). The Hesperides were the 'daughters of the evening' and the golden apples grew on a tree guarded by the serpent, Ladon, in a garden on the slopes of Mount Atlas. Hercules successfully reached the garden after a series of adventures, killed the serpent and delivered the apples to Eurystheus. In another version of this ancient narrative, Hercules persuaded Atlas to pick the golden apples, while he supported the world on his shoulders for Atlas in his stead. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
