A sailor's engraved bone cribbage board, dated 1818, from the whaling brig Cretan, of triangular form with lead ball feet, the underside inscribed Ship Cretan / May 1st 1818 / Peru, 3.5cm high, 31cm wideFootnotes: Note: The brig Cretan was originally built in Venice for the French navy and launched in 1807 as Nettuno. She was captured less than a year later by HMS Unite and taken into service by the Royal Navy as HMS Cretan. She served in the Mediterranean until 1814 when she sold and became a whaling vessel. Between 1815 and 1831 she made five voyages as a whaler. The current lot is likely to have been made during her second voyage, departing Britain on 7 September 1817 bound for the Galapagos where she is reported in November 1819.
