An exceptional Sobei Kinkozan vase, c.1890, of square section, shouldered ovoid form, finely enamelled and gilt with silver-dotted panels of a festival cart painted with a tiger, a samurai in court costume, a hanging basket with a puppy eyeing a butterfly and a bijin by a rivulet on a mirror black ground, the shoulders with clouds on cafe-au-lait, black Kinkozan sei zo, minute glaze chip to one shoulder, 25cm. Everything about this vase sets it apart from Kinkozan`s normal oeuvre: the shape (derived from a Chinese Ming bronze) the black and brown grounds, the use of silver (now tarnished but revivable) the subject matter, the amount of space accorded the decoration, the nonchalant signature and lack of impressed mark, all these point to a special commission. The tiger is a zodiac animal and, on the twelve-year cycle, came round in 1890, a perfect fit stylistically for this vase. A vase of similar form and also with hanging baskets probably by the same hand is illustrated in Meiji Ceramics, Gisela Jahn, n.d., pl 91. For a similar puppy see Satsuma, Louis Lawrence, 1991, p. 174, and the hanging basket
