A CHINESE IMPERIAL GUANGXU (1875-1908 )SILK AND EMBROIDERED SURCOAT with embroidered roundels to the back and front, each woven with gold and silver-wrapped thread with a front facing dragon beneath Chinese symbols and stylised wave designs, on a black silk ground, approximately 58" x 50" Provenance: The vendor`s father purchased the coat in 1929 from Peking whilst serving in the Scots Guards. In 1927, the 2nd Battalion departed for Shanghai in the Far East during the conflict between the Communists and Nationalists, with the dangers that this posed to the British populace living in Shanghai. The Battalion was also stationed in Hong Kong. He was given 3 weeks leave and travelled extensively in China, with an adviser, purchasing a number of items including the coat, as well as meeting the emperor.
