A silver coffee pot, of baluster form with half-reeded girdle, foliate decoration in relief, the lid with cherub terminal, with Regimental crest and inscription, 22.5cm high; a similar twin-handled sugar bowl with conforming Regimental crest, London 1901 & 02; and an associated plated teapot in the same style, (3). The S. Barton referred to in this inscription was Sir Sidney Barton, G.B.E., K.C.V.O., C.M.G. (1876-1946), a distinguished diplomat in the Chinese Consular Service and later British Ambassador in Abyssinia (1929-37). He served with the North China Field Force during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900 and, amongst his many Chinese postings, was Vice-Consul in Peking 1901-02. One of the roles of the 1st Chinese Regiment, which comprised native troops commanded by European officers, was to protect British nationals and property. It was therefore very active during the period of the 1900 rebellion and its aftermath.
