~ A George II Ebony Veneered Quarter Chiming Table Clock, signed Joseph Green, North Shields, circa 1730, inverted bell top pediment with brass carrying handle, side glass panels with pierced sound frets, pull repeat cord, 8-inch arched brass dial with a silvered chapter ring signed Jos Green North Shields, finely scroll and floral engraved dial centre, date and mock pendulum apertures, finely engraved arch depicting two winged cherubs and a central recessed silvered plaque for strike/silent selection, triple fusee movement with a verge escapement, quarter chiming on a nest of eight bells and striking a further bell for the hours, elaborately engraved movement backplate depicting a central urn of flowers, birds, floral and scroll decoration and signed below the centre, 51cm high see illustrations Joseph Green is recorded as working in North Shields as early as 1720 and several longcase clocks are known by him. He is believed to have died in 1739. A Fine and Rare Mid-18th Century Quarter Striking Table Clock with Bolt and Shutter Maintaining Power, signed Hindley, York, circa 1750, inverted bell top pediment with brass carrying handle, glass side panels, rectangular moulded base raised upon bracket feet, pull repeat and bolt and shutter maintaining power cords, 7-inch arched brass dial with a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, subisidiary silvered strike/silent selection dial below 6 signed Hindley York, matted dial centre with seconds dial, large arched twin chain fusee movement, deadbeat-type escapement, going train with bolt and shutter maintaining power, six spoke wheels, six double baluster type pillars, long polished steel crutch, quarter striking on three bells and striking the hours on the larger bell, tapered steel pendulum rod with fine screw adjustment rating nut to the lenticular bob, 55cm high over handle see illustrations Henry Hindley (1701-1771), born near Wigan and moved to work in Petergate, York in 1731. A very fine and talented clockmaker of his time who excelled in making complicated clockwork year duration, complex calendar work, table and turret clocks. In 1750 he made a clock for York Minster. Another almost identical example to this Henry Hindley is on exhibition at Fairfax House in York. 15.10.19 Case with scratches and small dents, case surfaces are rubbed in parts and discoloured, top side of the case with moulding very slightly lifting, back door with veneer slightly lifting, top side of both doors with later added small carved recessed panels, dial is dirty, chapter ring with small scratches, silvered dials need re-silvering, hands are discoloured, seconds hand is missing, movement is dirty and needs cleaning, one very small vacant to the centre of the topside of the movement backplate just above the back cock and this has another hole that lines up with this on the front plate, movement looks complete, striking work is working and the clock is in going order.
A Good George III Eight Day Dutch Striking Alarm Table Clock with Moonphase Display, signed Paul Rimbault, London, circa 1770, fruitwood veneered case with an inverted bell top pediment, brass carrying handle, glass side panels, two cords for pull repeat and pull-wind alarm set, 7-inch arched brass dial with a silvered chapter ring with a Dutch arcaded minute track, strike/not strike selection lever at 9, matted dial centre with date aperture and signed on a arched silvered plaque, central alarm disc, floral painted arch with a moonphase lunar display aperture, twin fusee movement with a verge escapement, Dutch striking on two bells, elaborately engraved movement backplate with scroll decoration, 51cm high over handle see illustrations Paul Rimbault is a maker of highly specialised clocks working in London at 9 Denmark St, St. Giles's from about 1770 until his death in 1785. Paul Rimbault and his brother Stephen were famous clockmakers of Huguenot descent. They are known for making complicated and unusual clocks with musical, carillon and Dutch striking mechanisms. Some of Paul Rimbault's clocks are exhibited in museums and collections around the world. 15.10.19 Case with small cracks to veneers and small chips in parts, inverted pediment with joints very slightly lifting, the case finish would have been ebonised over the fruitwood veneers and signs of the ebonising is still visible, dial chapter ring with slight staining marks, movement backplate with some small vacant holes, movement appears to have been converted from knife-edge pendulum to a suspension spring, in going order, functions are working.
