An early 20th century table clock, the dial signed J W Benson, 25 Old Bond Street, London, the gothic architectural case with four octagonal supports and a pitched cover with finely carved and pierced gallery, with a triple fusee quarter striking movement sounding on four bells and a gong, the dial 22cm diameter, the case 69cm high. *See clocks and watches proviso. CR - Overall good condition. One part of gallery detatched but present. Movement works correctly but the flywheel is very noisy when chiming. Dial with some wear to the silvering. See images.

FRODSHAM./ MAKER TO THE QUEEN./ 84 STRAND, LONDON., above a trefoil moulded base, all raised on squat gilt feet, with a fusee movement and original key signed FRODSHAM/ LONDON 33.5cm wide, 46cm high Note: Charles Frodsham (1810-1871) was one of the most significant and finest makers of clocks, watches and chronometers of the 19th century. He was born into a dynasty of horologists and was apprenticed to his father, William, at the age of 14. He started his own business in 1834, and expanded the company after purchasing John Roger Arnold's business following Arnold's death. Frodsham's company were well known for making some of the best carriage clocks during the 1800s, and during the latter part of the 19th century, for their time-precision regulator clocks. This particular clock is unusual for being a table regulator; Frodsham's were largely known for making floor-standing regulators for observatory use, and wall clocks for domestic purposes. A fine George III ebonised table clock by Higgs and Evans London, circa late 18th century, the hour striking movements with five pillars, the strike rack controlled on a bell with twin fusee movement and verge escapement, the arched silvered dial with strike-silent subsidiary dial, above Roman and Arabic numerals, signed Higgs and Evans London to the centre, date aperture below, foliate engraved gilt metal back plate, with brass carry handle, raised on brass bracket feet with key, dial 15.5cm wide x 34cm high, repairers marks on the back of dial reads 'T Clark 1799', and others later indistinctFootnote: Higgs and Evans were first established in Sweetings Alley and later Royal Exchange from 1775-1825. This was the firm of Robert Higgs, Peter Higgs and Jas Evans. Jas Evans was working in London from 1749, Robert and Peter Higgs from 1770.
