Sir Fred Pollock's report of the papers relating to the case of Thomas Smethurst ("The Richmond Poisoner" convicted of the murder of Isabella Bankes), 1859, 36pp, Alfred Swaine Taylor's copy with his name and address inscribed at the top and his annotation in the text; together with press cuttings relating to the trial, and a 16pp penny paper published at the time.Apothecary and water-cure enthusiast Dr Thomas Smethurst was convicted of the murder of his bigamous wife Isabella Bankes. However, the guilty verdict proved controversial and the medical evidence provided during the trial was disputed. Taylor had admitted during the trial that one of his tests for arsenic had been contaminated, which, despite Taylor's confidence that arsenic was present, cast doubt on all the forensic evidence. Smethurst was eventually reprieved and pardoned for murder, however he did have to serve time for bigamy.

Three Albums Containing a Collection of Approximately 230 German Third Reich Period and British Official Press Photographs, mostly large format (10 in by 8 in), including troop movements in various theatres of war, Third Reich ceremonies and rallies, battlefield scenes, Kriegsmarine subjects, bombardments, aftermath of bombing raids, etc., many with typewritten descriptive labels attached verso; together with four further albums, containing a large accumulation of assorted postcards, photographs, etc., including many later reprints (7) . Condition mostly good overall.
A Japanese Gendaito O-Wakizashi, the 59.5cm blade with undulating hamon, with signature to each side of the tang, the one piece copper habaki with diagonal incised decoration, the bronze tsuba cast with prunus blossom, the green braid bound same hilt with parcel gilt bronze dragon menuki, prunus blossom decorated fuchi and kashira, the lacquered wood saya with leather jungle cover with lacing and press-stud strap. Black patching to areas of the blade. The tang has orange rust pitting. The braid binding to the hilt is very grubby. The press-stud works
A Japanese Late 1944 Shin-Gunto Katana, the 68cm blade with one piece copper habaki, iron tsuba and kashira, brown braid bound hilt with bronze triple chrysanthemum head menuki, the wood saya with leather jungle cover with laced top and press-stud strap. Grey patching to blade, with numerous nicks to the edge. Some bruising to leather scabbard. Generally in good used condition. The press-stud strap does not quite reach the stud.
A Reversed Copper Printing Plate for The Sheffield Star Dated January 5th 1981, the heading reads "Ripper: Man Arrested in Sheffield", a heading that drew to an end the five year hunt for Peter Sutcliffe 'The Yorkshire Ripper', together with a contemporary typed summary of the arrest and trial of Peter Sutcliffe. Provenance: It is understood that The Star produced six of these plates to give to various people involved in the case. This example is from the South Yorkshire Police Press Liaison Officer at the time.

James', 3 Bolton Street, [London], 20 November, circa 1884, to Lady Wolseley, 'Does that delightful engagement hold for tomorrow night (Friday) and will you very kindly let me know the place and hour of tryst? The former proposal, if I mistake not, was that I should dine at Lady Hayter's. Has the present a similar complexion? I feel as if I ought to mention that I don't know - haven't the honour - Lady H, and haven't received any invitation from her...', three pages, 8vo, together with a blank envelope and blue pencil message to upper panel from Lord Wolseley for Mr Strong to redirect or post on the note Henry James enjoyed a warm friendship with Lord Wolseley and his wife for nearly 40 years. Much of the correspondence is gathered in Alan G. James (editor), Henry James's Letters to Field Marshal Lord Wolseley and Lady Wolseley, 1878-1913 (University of Virginia Press, 2012). (2)
