CRIMEAN WAR RELIC THE BRASS SWORD SCABBARD OF MAJOR-GENERAL CHARLES ASHE WINDHAM, `THE HERO OF THE REDAN` for a Mameluke-hilted sword, in the original green velvet lined and fitted mahogany case with brass handle and escutcheon engraved with armorials and inscribed MAJOR GENERAL C A WINDHAM, 103cm l, mid 19th c Provenance: General Charles Ashe Windham, KCB (1810-1870) of the Coldstream Guards. A portrait of Windham, sword in hand, standing before the Redan, by Charles Cousens (c1821-1889) is in the National Army Museum. In noticing his death The Times recounted Windham`s moment of glory: "General Windham was the first to enter the stronghold, and amid the shower of bullets and cannon balls that flew around him he seemed to bear about him a charmed life. At length, finding it hopeless to obtain support by sending messengers, he coolly walked across the open space before the ramparts in the midst of a well sustained fire, to demand assistance in person . The "Royals" were then placed at his disposal; but no sooner were they pit in formation than the men in the Redan were obliged to abandon the work. The opportunity had been lost. The correspondents of the press were not slow in recording the heroic bravery of Windham on this occasion, and on the arrival of General Codrington`s despatches at the Horse Guards, the subject of this memoir was rewarded by promotion to the rank of Major-General, for his distinguished conduct in having, with the greatest intrepity and coolness, headed the column of attack with assaulted the enemy`s defences on the 8th of September 1855". The scabbard and the interior of the case in excellent condition, the exterior of the case with numerous scuff marks and old knocks and scratches but complete

THE DIAL AN OCCASIONAL PUBLICATION EDITED BY CHAS. SHANNON AND CH. RICKETTS Nos 1-5 (all published), illustrated, pictorial wrappers, the first with tears and loss, London, (Chelsea) [August]1889- [December] 1897 (5) Watry A1-A5. Originally to be named `Pan`, `The Dial` was chosen in preference because it was intended by Ricketts and Shannon to publish their highly original avant garde art magazine `at such intervals as the sun of inspiration permits`. Although they lost money on every issue, The Dial was bought as a collector`s item from the outset. So impressed was Oscar Wilde that he visited Ricketts and Shannon advising them that "it is quite delightful, but do not bring out a second number, all perfect things should be unique!" The endless delays and problems with the printers of the first number led Ricketts and Shannon to publish the subsequent issues themselves at their own press, the Vale. Never were more than 270 copies printed, in the case of Nos 1 and 2 only 200, at prices from 7s 6d to 12s 6d. Surviving copies of the first issue, in particular, are rare.

WAKEFIELD, YORKSHIRE. AN EXTENSIVE GROUP OF RECORDS AND PAPERS RELATING TO THE LOCAL POLITICAL, COMMERCIAL AND ANTIQUARIAN INTERESTS OF THE FERNANDEZ FAMILY in particular José Luis Fernandez and his son J L Fernandez Junior, Aldermen and Corn Merchants, including the papers, letters and official documents of their firm`s bankruptcy, civic life, the parish church (All Saints, from 1888 Wakefield Cathedral) disputes (eg over `The Conservative Plate`) their milling, brewing and other interests, local printed political ephemera, newspapers, a chap book (c1810), an album, letters from supporters and others received by J L Fernandez Junior when incarcerated in York Castle and his writings whilst in prison, copy letters, tradesmen`s bills, etc, early 17th c-c1890 (but mainly 19th c) (please refer to online catalogue for further details) At the 1861 trial at York Spring Assizes of John Barff Charlesworth for bribery over the 1859 Parliamentary Election, the jailing (to loud cheers in court) of J L Fernandez for contempt caused a sensation. His repeated refusal to answer a question of the Solicitor General, despite repeated warnings from the judge, led many in and outside the court to draw their own conclusion. Certainly the judge suspected his motivation for he also imposed a hefty fine of £500 in addition to the sentence of six months in York Castle. Fernandez was just the sort of well connected local man - active in the church, freemasonry and various commercial enterprises - that the wealthy Charlesworth, who was himself barred from standing, needed in order to secure the election of his cousin as MP for Wakefield. The web of electoral corruption revealed filled many column inches in the press, carefully preserved in the preset lot and including the very detailed report on the case that was published as a supplement to the Wakefield Express on March 23rd.
LEEDS, YORKSHIRE. AN EXTENSIVE GROUP OF GENEALOGICAL AND OTHER RECORDS, LETTERS, PHOTOGRAPHS AND MEMORABILIA OF THE NUSSEY FAMILY OF POTTERNEWTON HALL late 18th-early 20th c (please refer to online catalogue for details) Provenance: The principal collector of these and other papers (i) would appear to have been Agnes Georgina Nussey (b1875) the sister of Mary Anne Leathley Nussey (b1868), daughters of Samuel Leathley Nussey (1835-1895) of Potternewton Hall, a bibliophile who ran a small private press from his house (see following lot) and his wife, Agnes Clark (m 1864); thence by descent to James M Nussey (d1970) of Bromsgrove, by whose widow bequeathed to the present vendor. A name which can be regarded as `woven` into the history of Leeds and the West Riding of Yorkshire, the Nussey family has claimed descent from William the Silent (1533-1584). The name Nussey or Nussé is thought to be a corruption of that of Nassau. Certainly by the 17th century, and for 200 years they were actively involved in the dying and manufacture of wollen cloth in West Yorkshire. In the early 19th century, its prosperity assured, several members of the family played a prominent role in the civic and religious life of the area. Obadiah Nussey, JP, of Morley House, Headingley served as Mayor of Leeds in 1863/64 and was `father` (ie founder) of the town`s Royal Exchange. Sir Thomas Nussey, a baronet (cr. 1909) was MP for Pontefract (1893-1910) and earlier in the century, John Nussey was appointed Apothecary to George IV. It is however, undoubtedly Ellen Nussey (1817-1897) of Birstall, the lifelong friend of Charlotte Bronte, who has the greatest claim to posterity. Potternewton Hall, an exceptionally fine early 18th c brick mansion, was demolished in 1935 for urban development. i) Records of the Clarke family, c1800-1905 of Widewath, near Cumbria, with some Nussey and Murdock-related material, were deposited at Cumbria Record Office by J N Booth & J M Nussey in 1983 (see also lot 305).
