Lot 144

Cary,Robert The Pioneer Corps 14.5 X 22cm On 5th July. 1890. fifty-seven men from `B` Troop of the Pioneer Corps crossed the Shashi River on the first stage of an historic adventure. That adventure did not end when the Pioneer Corps hoisted the Union Flag at Fort Salisbury, two months later. It has, in fact, gone on right up to the present day.(1975). Everything that happens to-day--economic, social, political--stems from that symbolic river crossing 85 years ago. And yet the men who formed part of that historic march have, for the most part, remained shadowy and unknown. At no time in the years since 1890 have their biographies been set-down so that future generations can tell what sort of men they were. At no time has anyone produced a definitive list which would show exactly who was there---and who merely claimed the honour at a alter date. Hardback with unclipped dustcover. Author`s Note and Foreword/Frontispiece Map- 142 pages text with supporting illustrations and data. Fine copy. O.M.Hilliard and B.L.Burt Streptocarpus-An African Plant Study 15.5 X 24.5cm Streptocarpus contains some of the most fascinating of African plants. It is a genus of contrasts: the largest flower could hold the whole plant of the smallest species, yet the large flowermay be one of a hundred on a plant with only a single leaf, while the snall plant may have several leaves. Many species have been prized in cultivation since the first was sent to Kew by James Bowie some 150 years ago. The lure of Streptocarpus has taken the authors from the forests of the eastern Cape to the high rolling plateau of the Nyika in northern Malawi. Their account is compounded of field knowledge and the extensive study of cultivated plants and herbarium specimens. Hardback with Dustcover-Frontispiece 410 pages text supported with drawings, illustrations and photographs some in colour. As New. Lot 151

Karen Blixen The Illustrated Out of Africa 19.5 X 26cm Out of Africa is probably the finest book ever written about the nature of the African continent and its people-although at first sight it is not about either of these things. Karen Blixen set out in middle age to record the central experience of her life, in which with her husband she went out to Kenya to manage a coffee plantation close to the Ngong Hills near Nairobi, and continued to do so by herself for ten years after her divorce. What she achieved, however is a uniquely poignant evocation of a vanishing land and its peoples, whose destiny seems to echo the author`s own preoccupations but remains eternally distinct from them. This superbly illustrated edition brings alive the Kenya of those years: the day to day events on a struggling farm. the often eccentric European settlers, the Afriacn peoples among whom they lived and, above all, the magnificent, wild land in which the story is set. Hardback with clipped dustover over laminated boards with 288 pages , text, illustrations and colour illustrations. Very good condition. Maurice Boucher(Editor) Livingstone Letters 1843 to 1872- David Livingstone Correspondence in the Brenthurst Library, Johannesburg 24.5 X 31cm Livingstone Letters 1843 to 1872. David Livingstone Correspondence in the Brenthurst library-Johannesburg. Brenthurst Second Series- Volume 1. A legendary figure in the history of African exploration and missionary endeavour, David Livingstone has captured the imagination of many writers. Early literature on his life and achievements was generally excessively eulogistic and even now his name is recalled in many parts of Africa with affection. Livingstone himself helps us in no small measure to do this. An indefatigable letter-writer and diarist, he has left us a vast amount of material to work on. This volume concentrates upon the Livingstone letters in The Brenthurst Library covering a period from his first years as a missionary in Africa in the early 1840`s to the drama of his last journey`s three decades later. The material represents only a fraction of Livingstone`s writings, and other sources, both in The Brenthurst Library and outside it, have been explored to round out the picture. The text is enhanced by many contemporary illustrations, including several hitherto unpublished works. Hardback with Dustcover--Frontispiece- 256 pages text supported with maps, illustrations and colour plates. Slight wear to dustcover. Very clean copy. Phillida Brooke Simons(Text) John Blades Currey 1850 to 1900- Fifty Years in the Cape Colony 24 X 31cm The name of John Blades Currey (1829-1904) is seldom mentioned in histories of southern Africa. Indeed, the young Englishman who arrived at the Cape in 1850 made little direct impact on its story. He was nonetheless to become a profound influence on some of the Cape`s most famous men and an astute chronicler of the political and social events of his time. His memoirs, published here for the first time, cover half a century of Cape history, from 1850 to 1900. Soldiering, farming, copper-mining-Currey tried all these; then,on the advice of governor Sir George Grey he joined the Cape civil service..While inits employ in thelate 1860`s he was entrusted with the task of introducing to a sceptical Europe southern Africa`s first diamond, the `Eureka`. Later as secretary to the government of Griqualand West, he chose the new name of `Kimberley` for the burgeoning diamond-fields town of New Rush. But in 1875 Currey was blamed for the diggers` rebellion there, and this led to his dismissal from office and blighted his subsequently public career. While he was in Kimberley Curey befriended two young fortune-hunters, both of whom were to become renowned premiers of the Cape: Cecil John Rhodes and John X. Merriman. To both of them Currey was to remain a lifelong friend and counsellor. Hardback with Dustcover/Frontispiece 275 pages text with 64 plates. Brenthurst Second Series-2. Very clean copy. Early Cape Printing: NOTICE OF GOVERNOR’S PERMISSION TO PUBLISH THE CAPE TOWN GAZETTE (1800) 245 175 mm The Governor, His Excellency Sir George Yonge, Knight of the Bath, Etc., Etc. His Excellency has been pleased to grant Permission for the Printing and Publishing a Weekly Newspaper, in the English and Dutch Languages, under the Title of CAPE TOWN GAZETTE, AND AFRICAN ADVERTISER. N.B. The First Number will be ready for delivery on Saturday, the 16th Instant. Cape Town, 1st August, 1800 Two single sheets, 245 x 175 mm, one in English and the other in Dutch, printed on both sides. The two leaves bound into full light blue leather with gilt titling on the upper cover. These Notices are amongst the earliest examples of printing at the Cape. Prior to the first British occupation of the Cape in 1795 printing at the Cape had been prevented by the Dutch East India Company which employed clerks to copy official documents. On 21st July 1800 Sir George Yonge granted Messrs. Walker & Robertson permission to set up a printing press to be known as the Government Printing Office, No.35 Plein Street, and this was followed by the notice to publish the Cape Town Gazette. Prior to these notices only fragments of printing are known. Laidler in his The Pre-Victorian Products of the Cape Press 1796 – 1837 (Johannesburg 1935) lists it as the sixth item. The first issue of the Cape Town Gazette – Kaapsche Stads Courant appeared on 16th August 1800. See also: Smith (A.H.) The Spread of Printing, South Africa, Amsterdam 1971. Forbes, Vernon & Rourke, John Paterson`s Cape Travels, 1777-1779 4to William Paterson, the twenty-one-year-old son of a Scottish village gardener, set out for the Cape in 1777; as protege of the young bluestocking, the Countess of Strathmore, he was commissioned by her to add to her collection of plants. A variety of new plant species was discovered on his four journeys which embraced a grand sweep of 1500 kilometres from the mouth of the Orange River in the west to the banks of the Keiskamma River in the east. The original record of his Cape travels is here published for the first time - a triumph of understatement, a laconic tour de force, and a marked contrast to the flamboyant verbosity of of his immediate successor, Francois le Vaillant. It is the first full-length account in English of extensive travel in the interior of southern Africa - 9000 kilometres were covered in little over two years - and it records the ceremony of naming the Orange River, the first finding of fossils in southern Africa, and the first journey along the diamond coast [flap notes]; 202pp. Condition: mint, in the publisher`s original box. fine, in original box Johannesburg The Brenthurst Press 1980 Click here to view further details and to bid

Tabler, Edward C. Baines On The Zambezi, 1858 To 1859 4to In 1858 the famed missionary-explorer Dr David Livingstone led an expedition, sponsored by the British Government, to investigate the navigability of the Zambezi River. Artist and storekeeper to the venture was Thomas Baines whose diary of 1858 is published here for the first time together with related correspondence. The text is illustrated with over a hundred of Baines`s pencil and water-colour sketches, many of which have not been reproduced before. It was hoped that the Zambezi River would prove to be a major waterway, thus providing access through Portuguese-occupied territory to the uncolonized interior of south-central Africa. There, by the introduction of christianity and trade, Livingstone dreamt that the illicit slave trade could be brought to an end [flap notes]; 251pp. Condition: Mint, in the publisher`s original box. fine, in original box Johannesburg The Brenthurst Press 1982 Click here to view further details and to bid

Apart from South Africa and Britain they mainly came from France, Germany, Holland, U.S.A., Australia, and Canada and included artefacts made by prisoners-of-war scattered as far and wide as Ceylon, Bermuda and St. Helena.
