Anno 1573.- [10], 201 [i. é 200], [2], 56, [2 br., 2], 63 [i. é 64], [3, 1 br.] p.: il.; 28 cm.- E., Pedro Nunes (1502-1578), born in Alcácer do Sal, of Jewish family, studied at the University of Salamanca; he was the main cosmographer of the Kingdom and professor at the University of Coimbra, having benefited from the protection of the Court, namely from the infants D. Luís, D. Henrique and D. Duarte, who were his disciples. According to Henrique Leitão, “De arte atque rationi navigandi”, published here for the first time, it is considered “the author's most important book and, therefore, the most important book of Portuguese Science”. Joint edition of four important scientific texts, the first two with consecutive pagination and a single common title page. The two remaining texts with independent title pages and pagination, show the particularity that the dates of the foot press were manually amended, at the time, from 1571 to 1573. Both have the indication on the face of “Secunda editio”. Copy missing the 6th preliminary leaf that should contain the errata and, on the verso, a representation of the compass rose; with slight browning and occasional slight tide stains. Face of the second part (De erratis...) slightly shorter. Circular stamp (±25 mm) erased on the three title pages, resulting in slight abrasion; minor restoration on the last sheet. Interesting ownership manuscript on title page, signed by Caspar Hersbach Agrippinas (Cologne printer and publisher), dated 1619. Recent binding, full canvas in shades of parchment. Anselmo, 861. BN (16th century), 523. Library of King D. Manuel II, 308, 310 and 311.

Duarte Nunes (1530-1608), erudite historian, graduated in Law and judge of the Casa da Suplicação (former supreme court of Portugal), after the death of the Cardinal King D. Henrique warmly embraced the cause of Philip I, whose right to the succession he defended in writing against those who challenged him. Formerly owned by Lord Beaverbrook1938 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Sports LimousineCoachwork by Park WardRegistration no. UKE 886BChassis no. 3DL38Odometer reading: tbcMOT: Exempt*Landmark Rolls-Royce model*One of some 300 survivors*Present ownership since 2008Perhaps the most outstanding luxury car of the 1930s - certainly on this side of the Channel - was Rolls-Royce's Phantom III. Introduced in 1936, the 7,340cc V12-engined Phantom III succeeded the six-cylinder Phantom II. A state-of-the-art design, the V12 engine initially produced 165bhp, which was raised subsequently to 180bhp, sufficient to propel later examples to 100mph, earlier models being capable of around 90. Its engine configuration aside, the Phantom III represents an important milestone in the history of Rolls-Royce cars, being the first with independent front suspension. A total of 710 had been manufactured when WW2 halted production, of which around 300 exist today.Sold on 10th May 1938 to Jack Barclay Ltd of Hanover Square, London W1, chassis number '3DL38' wears 'sports limousine' (saloon-with-division) coachwork by Park Ward Ltd in the then fashionable 'semi razor edge' style. The current owner purchased the Rolls-Royce at Bonhams' Harrogate sale in November 2008 (Lot 650) when it was described as follows: 'The accompanying copy order form records the first owner as one William Murray, while the chassis card lists one G Dawson, Esq of Cheltenham as owner from 26th August 1946. Other more noteworthy owners listed include Fleet Street press baron, Lord Beaverbrook (in 1949) and Manchester-based architect, Joseph Sunlight (from October 1950). Stafford Training Services is listed as owner from 31st March 1982 on the accompanying old-type Swansea V5 document, the previous having been one Albert John Wilkins of Basted, Kent.' Accompanying documentation now consists solely of the aforementioned old V5. The Phantom III has been on static display for a number of years and as such will require recommissioning prior to road use.
