Carte du Perou pour l`Histoire Generale des Voyages, from Prevost`s Histoire Generale des Voyages, circa 1755 (8.2 x 14.5""). A nice map of Peru showing the coast from the Baye de Buenaventura that extends south to the border with Chile. There is excellent detail along the coastline, and many rivers are identified inland. A decorative title cartouche adorns the map. Engraved by Benard. Condition: Issued folding, now pressed, on watermarked paper with one small hole east of Lima. The binding trim at left has been replaced with old paper, and an adjacent binding tear has been archivally repaired. (B+)B. 3e Feuille Suite de la Province de Quito au Perou, from Le Petit Atlas MaritimeÂ…, circa 1765 (14 x 7.4""). This map of northern Peru extends to present-day southern Ecuador. The map is filled with numerous small rivers and the Maranon River is well defined in the east. A few towns are also identified, including Loja (Loxa), Zaruma (Zarnma), and Paita (Payta). A key below the title identifies the major buildings, including a palace, cathedral, town hall, and hospital. The city is protected on one side by a river while extensive ramparts and suburbs surround the other sides. Jules JANSSEN. Manuscrit autographe, Notes sommaires sur la jeunesse et les études de M. J. Janssen, [1895] ; titre et 4 pages in-fol. au crayon. Intéressante notice autobiographique, où il retrace les grandes étapes de sa vie et de ses travaux, de sa naissance à 1895. Il raconte son enfance, ses premières années à la banque, sa vocation pour les sciences, qui lui font tout abandonner pour passer son baccalauréat à 25 ans et entamer des études scientifiques spécialisées. Puis dès 1856, il voyage : Orient, Amérique (pour étudier le magnétisme terrestre à l’équateur) ; en 1860 il est reçu docteur ès sciences. En 1862 il étudie la spectroscopie, et construit lui-même des instruments « avec une grande ingéniosité. D’une adresse remarquable. Quand il était enfant il regardait beaucoup les ouvriers [...] et apprit ainsi à souder, à relier, à faire de la menuiserie ; toutes ces connaissances lui servirent beaucoup dans la construction de ses instruments [...] Ce fut un expérimentateur remarquable ; on peut dire qu’il avait le génie de l’expérience »... Il parle de son travail sur les raies telluriques, ainsi que de ses divers voyages d’observation, notamment pour l’étude de comètes, d’éclipses, etc. : Grèce, Espagne, Italie, puis les Indes en 1868 pour la grande éclipse, « 7 m ½ la plus longue éclipse depuis Thalès. Méthode des Protubérances ». En 1870, création d’un petit observatoire dans le pavillon de Breteuil, donné par l’Empereur Napoléon III. En 1873, nomination à l’Institut ; en 1874, passage de Vénus, et invention du révolver photographique ; en 1875, il est nommé à la Royal Society de Londres ; en 1876, création à Meudon de l’Observatoire d’Astronomie physique par décret ; en 1877, il invente la photographie solaire ; en 1884 il participe au Congrès de Washington pour l’adoption d’un Méridien international ; en 1886 il fonde le Prix Janssen ; en 1887, il préside l’Académie ; de 1890 à 1895 il effectue de nombreuses ascensions et séjours au Mont Blanc, où notamment il crée un observatoire et installe en 1895 une grande lunette... On joint divers documents : autoportrait de Janssen pendant sa maladie à Lima (24,5 x 16 cm, crayon) ; certificat religieux, Jérusalem 29 septembre 1856 ; autorisation du général Schmitz, Gouverneur de Paris, de partir en ballon pour « une mission scientifique en Algérie » (2 décembre 1870) ; manuscrit autographe sur les Lois de Kepler, rédigé pour Charles Gounod (7 p. in-4) ; notes généalogiques par Antoinette Janssen ; menu et programme du Congrès International des Études solaires à l’Observatoire de Meudon en 1907.
